Want Full Control of the iPhone 18 Pro’s Camera? Halide 3.2 Goes Further

Halide 3.2 gives iPhone 18 Pro owners finer aperture selection, Aperture Priority and direct ISO control. Here is what changes versus Apple’s Camera app.

Yes—Halide Mark III 3.2 adds the iPhone 18 Pro feature serious photographers were waiting for. It supports the phone’s adjustable aperture, lets you choose any f-stop within the lens’s supported range, and introduces Aperture Priority. Halide also offers a Manual mode with direct ISO control. Apple’s Camera app already has manual aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a histogram, so Halide’s advantage is finer aperture selection and a more specialist workflow—not basic manual control that the iPhone lacks.

What Halide 3.2 adds on iPhone 18 Pro

Halide’s App Store release notes for version 3.2 say the update supports the iPhone 18 Pro’s new adjustable aperture and adds Aperture Priority. The update applies to the 48MP Fusion Main camera, the only iPhone 18 Pro camera in this release with variable aperture hardware.

Fully variable aperture

Apple’s Camera app exposes four manual aperture settings. Halide is reported by MacRumors to allow selection of any f-stop across the lens’s supported range. The exact minimum and maximum f-stops are not stated in the available documentation, so “fully variable” should be read as continuous selection within the hardware range, not an unlimited aperture range.

Aperture Priority

In Aperture Priority, you choose the f-stop and Halide selects shutter speed and ISO. That is useful when depth of field is the creative decision—for example, keeping a portrait background soft while letting the app maintain an appropriate exposure.

Manual mode with ISO

Halide’s Manual mode gives direct control of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. This is the clearest operational difference from Apple’s documented Camera controls, which list manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance plus a histogram, but do not list a user-set ISO control.

Two new Looks

Version 3.2 adds Dawn and Quicksilver. Halide describes Dawn as filmic warmth in the mid-tones and highlights, gentle rich shadows and subtle cool complementary colors. Quicksilver uses high contrast and muted color to evoke a silver-retention alternative process. Halide says the Looks were developed with Hollywood colorist Cullen Kelly and built on its Process Zero approach for natural, algorithm-free photos.

16:9 capture

MacRumors also reports a new 16:9 shooting mode in Halide 3.2, giving you a widescreen framing option at capture rather than requiring a later crop.

Can Halide control the iPhone 18 Pro’s aperture?

Yes, on the adjustable-aperture Fusion Main camera. The iPhone 18 Pro uses six laser-cut blades. Apple says the system can automatically change aperture for depth of field and lighting, while its Camera app provides four manual aperture choices. Halide exposes finer selection across the supported lens range.

Halide 3.2 versus Apple Camera

Both apps can produce controlled exposures on an iPhone 18 Pro. The practical choice is whether you need Halide’s finer aperture and dedicated interface or prefer Apple’s integrated camera experience.

Styles Apple’s built-in processing and controls Dawn and Quicksilver Looks built on Process Zero

Which app should you use?

Choose Apple Camera when integration matters

  • You want to launch the camera quickly from the Lock Screen or Camera Control.
  • You need Apple’s documented controls across Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo or Time-Lapse.
  • Four aperture settings are sufficient for your shooting.
  • You prefer Apple’s computational processing and a single built-in workflow.

Choose Halide when control is the priority

  • You want to pick intermediate f-stops rather than one of Apple’s four choices.
  • You need direct ISO control alongside shutter speed and aperture.
  • You prefer Aperture Priority for depth-of-field-led shooting.
  • You want a dedicated interface, Process Zero rendering and the Dawn or Quicksilver Looks.
  • You want to compose directly in 16:9.

Halide’s Process Zero and Looks are creative and rendering choices, not proof of objectively superior image quality. No independent, reproducible head-to-head test isolating Halide 3.2 from Apple Camera establishes a measured image-quality winner.

What the iPhone 18 Pro hardware contributes

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on September 9, 2026, with availability scheduled for September 18, 2026. Its 48MP Fusion Main camera is the first camera in this release with variable aperture, built from six laser-cut blades. Apple says automatic aperture adjustment can balance depth of field and light, while the company’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, positioned the feature as a way to give creators more versatility and professionals more control.

MacRumors reports Apple-associated claims of “around 50 percent better low-light performance” for the aperture change. That is a manufacturer-related figure reported by MacRumors, not an independent test of Halide 3.2.

Price and what to check before subscribing

MacRumors lists Halide Mark III at $69.99 for a one-time purchase or $19.99 per year. App Store pricing can vary by country and change over time, so check the live listing for your region before buying. Halide is an App Store product; the iPhone 18 Pro is required for its new adjustable-aperture features.

How to decide in practice

  1. Use Apple Camera first and confirm that its four aperture settings cover your normal subjects.
  2. If you need an intermediate f-stop, install or update Halide Mark III to version 3.2 and select the adjustable-aperture Fusion Main camera.
  3. Use Aperture Priority when depth of field matters more than choosing every exposure variable.
  4. Switch to Manual mode when you need to lock aperture, shutter speed and ISO together.
  5. Compare Dawn, Quicksilver, Process Zero and Apple’s processing on your own subjects; treat the result as a stylistic preference rather than a verified quality ranking.
