If you like tmux’s persistent terminal workspaces but want a more discoverable setup for panes, tabs, layouts, and plugins, Zellij is a strong candidate to try. It runs inside a terminal emulator you already use, and its KDL layout files can describe a repeatable project workspace. That does not make it objectively easier for everyone: the right fit depends on whether you prefer Zellij’s guided defaults or tmux’s familiar workflow.
What changes when you switch from tmux to Zellij?
Zellij is a terminal workspace layer: it provides panes, tabs, sessions, layouts, and plugins within your terminal emulator. The project’s FAQ describes it as compatible with an existing terminal, shell, editor, dotfiles, and shell customizations. Switching workspace tools therefore does not inherently mean replacing the rest of your terminal setup.

The practical appeal is that Zellij makes more of its workspace controls visible. Its default keybindings are mnemonic, and its status bar displays shortcut hints. You can customize the bindings, but you may still need to adjust them to your habits. Users who encounter conflicts with editor shortcuts can try Zellij’s unlock-first preset.

How Zellij layouts make recurring projects easier to start
Zellij layouts are KDL configuration files. According to the project FAQ, a layout can define pane placement, commands to run, files to open in an editor, tabs, and plugins such as tab bars or status bars. That lets you describe a project workspace once and reopen a similar arrangement when you return to the project.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A practical project layout
For example, a development workspace could reserve one pane for an editor, another for tests, and a third for logs. A layout can specify those panes and the commands or editor files to open, rather than requiring you to recreate the arrangement manually each time. The FAQ also identifies project-specific layouts and shared team configurations as use cases.
This is configuration, not magic: the layout describes the workspace you want, and the commands and files still depend on your project and local environment. The documented flexibility is useful if you have repeatable work; it does not establish that every setup takes less effort than a comparable tmux configuration.

What Zellij’s plugin support does—and doesn’t—promise
The Zellij project describes plugins written in any language that compiles to WebAssembly. Its FAQ gives tab bars and status bars as examples of plugins that can be included in layouts. This gives you a way to extend the workspace beyond its built-in panes and tabs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat capability is not a guarantee that a particular plugin exists, is maintained, or works with every Zellij version. Check the documentation and compatibility details for any specific plugin before making it central to your workflow. The available project information establishes the plugin mechanism, not a blanket quality or compatibility rating for plugins.

Zellij or WezTerm: choose where you want the workspace to live
| Decision | Zellij | WezTerm |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Inside an existing terminal emulator, according to the Zellij FAQ. | WezTerm is itself a terminal emulator with multiplexing capabilities. |
| Workspace configuration | KDL layouts can describe panes, commands, editor files, tabs, and plugins. | Configuration uses Lua, normally in .wezterm.lua or a documented configuration directory. |
| Remote connections | The reviewed Zellij material establishes terminal workspace features, but does not specify comparable remote-domain details. | Documentation describes SSH, Unix-socket, and TLS domains. SSH domains require a compatible WezTerm version on the remote end. |
| Stated maturity caveat | No corresponding caveat is stated in the cited project material. | WezTerm’s documentation calls multiplexing young and rapidly evolving. |
WezTerm’s documentation says its out-of-the-box experience multiplexes local tabs and windows that persist until closed; additional configuration enables multiplexing similar to tmux or screen. It also watches its selected Lua configuration file, and most options take effect immediately after reload. Choose it if you want terminal-emulator and multiplexing functions integrated in one application. Treat the project’s own maturity warning as a reason to check whether its current behavior suits your needs, not as a measured comparison with Zellij or tmux.
How to decide whether Zellij fits your workflow
- Try Zellij if you want to keep your terminal emulator and shell while gaining visible workspace controls, reusable layouts, and a documented plugin system.
- Look closely at keybindings if your editor relies on shortcuts that may overlap with terminal workspace controls. Zellij allows customization and offers an unlock-first preset for this kind of conflict.
- Consider WezTerm if you prefer an integrated terminal-and-multiplexer approach or need its documented remote domains. Account for its documentation’s warning that multiplexing is still evolving rapidly.
- Stay with your current setup if it already handles your sessions and project workspaces well. The documented features do not prove that switching will improve productivity or make configuration easier for every user.
Installing Zellij without chasing an unreleased build
The project points users to operating-system packages, prebuilt release binaries, or compilation through Cargo. Its repository advises ordinary users to choose released builds rather than installing the moving main branch. Package availability and installation steps vary by operating system, so use the live project installation instructions and release information for your platform. The repository identifies Zellij’s license as MIT.
