Most Walmart.com purchases can be returned within 90 days of purchase or receipt. Items sold and shipped by Walmart Marketplace sellers generally have a 30-day window. Your order’s Purchase History page is the controlling source: it shows the item’s actual eligible return or replacement date and the methods Walmart offers.
Start the return online before shipping anything. The item-specific flow may offer a Walmart store return, scheduled pickup, a prepaid-label mail return, or a FedEx Office drop-off. Refunds normally go to the original payment method, but Walmart says outbound shipping charges are not always refunded and payment providers can take additional time to post the credit.

Walmart’s standard policy applies to products purchased in Walmart U.S. stores, Walmart.com, and Walmart Business. It states: “You have 90 days after purchase or upon receipt to return most items unless noted in our exceptions.” The date shown beside the individual order takes precedence over a general rule, especially for seasonal purchases, Marketplace orders, and category exceptions.

Do not calculate the deadline from memory. Walmart’s Purchase History records the latest date on which that specific item can be returned or replaced.

- Sign in to the Walmart account used for the purchase.
- Open Purchase History.
- Select the order, then open the relevant item rather than treating the whole order as one return.
- Look for the eligible return or replacement date and read any exception language.
- Choose Start a return while the option is available.
Online orders can contain items with different sellers, categories, or delivery dates. Check each item separately if the order contains multiple products. A Marketplace line may have a shorter window than a Walmart-sold line in the same checkout.
How to start a Walmart.com return
Beginning in Purchase History lets Walmart match the return route, label, pickup availability, and refund choice to the item. The sequence is:
- Open the item in Purchase History and select Start a return.
- Select the item and the reason for returning it.
- Choose Refund or Replacement when Walmart offers both.
- Review the available return methods. The choices are item-specific; a method shown for one product may not appear for another.
- Confirm the return and save the barcode, email, label, or pickup details supplied by Walmart.
If the item is oversized or cannot reasonably be taken to a local carrier, Walmart directs customers to Customer Care. Contacting support from the order page gives the representative the item and order details needed to determine the next step.

Only the choices shown after you create the return are available for that item. A store may accept an eligible online purchase even when mail is inconvenient, while a freight or hazardous-material item may be limited to seller instructions or Customer Care.

Shipping charges, labels, and packaging
Walmart’s refund guidance says: “We refund Walmart.com returns to your original method of payment. Outbound shipping charges aren’t always refunded upon return.” That means the item’s return approval does not by itself establish that the original delivery fee will come back. The return screen or Customer Care can provide the case-specific answer for the item and reason.
Return shipping and outbound delivery are separate questions. When Walmart provides a label or a pickup, follow the exact instructions in the return confirmation rather than buying postage independently. Keep the carrier receipt and tracking number until the refund is visible.
Repackage products when the selected method requires it. Marketplace restrictions can require the original rechargeable battery, and assembled goods may need to be disassembled and repackaged before a store or FedEx return. If the product is too large, heavy, hazardous, or unusual to package safely, stop and use the seller instructions or Customer Care instead of sending it on your own.

Walmart says Walmart.com returns are refunded to the original payment method. Its published figures are typical processing estimates, not a promise about the moment a bank or payment provider posts the credit.

If Walmart cannot return an online purchase to the original debit or credit card, its guidance says the refund will be issued to Walmart Balance. A “within seven days” or “within three hours” estimate describes Walmart’s processing; your bank, card issuer, or benefit administrator may add posting time.
If the refund seems late
- Check the return status in Purchase History and confirm that the carrier shows delivery when a mailed return was used.
- Compare the refund destination with the original tender, including any Walmart Balance account.
- Check pending transactions and statement credits rather than only the available balance.
- Contact Walmart Customer Care with the order number and tracking receipt if the published typical period has passed without a status update.
Marketplace orders need a separate check
Marketplace products are sold by third parties. On the item page and order details, the seller’s name appears beside the “sold and shipped by” information. Those items generally have a 30-day return period, and the seller’s restrictions can determine whether a Walmart store, mail carrier, or seller-directed route is available.
Walmart says eligible seller-shipped items may be returned to a Walmart store within 30 days without a box or shipping label, subject to restrictions. Other products require contacting the Marketplace seller and following its return-shipping directions.
Marketplace items that may not qualify for a store return
- Freight, heavy, oversized, or odd-sized goods.
- Some hazardous materials.
- Luxury items and products with special handling requirements.
- Items whose seller terms require direct return instructions.
A product with a rechargeable battery must include the original battery to qualify. An assembled item that required assembly must be disassembled and repackaged before a store or FedEx return. These requirements are in addition to the deadline shown for the order.

Marketplace Promise disputes
Walmart’s Marketplace Promise may apply in listed situations such as a seller refusing an eligible return or failing to refund within two business days after receiving a trackable return. Walmart describes a two-business-day seller response period before it may step in. The Promise has circumstances and exclusions; use the current Marketplace customer-help instructions rather than assuming it covers every disagreement.

Most items bought from October 1 through December 31 are covered by an extended return date of January 31 under Walmart’s standard policy. Marketplace seller participation varies, and category exceptions can override the seasonal extension. The order page remains the safest authority.
The policy also has separate handling for damaged or defective merchandise. When an item arrives damaged, is defective, or does not match the listing, choose the most accurate reason in the online return flow and follow the resulting instructions. Do not discard packaging, accessories, or required parts until Walmart or the seller confirms what must be sent back.
For returns initiated from outside the United States, Walmart says in-store returns are unavailable and the methods vary by country. The U.S. store-return instructions therefore should not be applied to an international order.
What to do when an option or deadline is missing
The return button is gone
Verify that you are signed into the purchasing account and viewing the correct item. The eligible date may have passed, the order may be from a Marketplace seller, or an exception may apply. If the product is damaged, defective, oversized, or otherwise unusual, contact Customer Care with the order details.
The store or FedEx option does not appear
Do not substitute a different route without authorization. Walmart displays only methods it considers available for that item and address. Use the offered mail, pickup, or seller-directed process, or ask Customer Care whether another method can be arranged.
The seller has not responded
Keep proof of delivery for a trackable return and use the Marketplace dispute instructions. Walmart’s stated seller response period is two business days in the situations covered by its Marketplace Promise process.

The refund is less than expected
Check whether outbound shipping was excluded, whether part of the order used a different tender, and whether the refund went to Walmart Balance. The public guidance does not establish one universal shipping-charge outcome for every item or reason, so ask Customer Care to explain the specific transaction.
