Walking appears to help more than sitting when the goal is to generate ideas. In laboratory experiments, participants did better on divergent-thinking tasks while walking, but walking did not reliably help focused tasks with one correct answer. The practical takeaway: try a walk to brainstorm, then sit down to evaluate and execute your ideas.
What the studies found
In their 2014 paper, “Give Your Ideas Some Legs: The Positive Effect of Walking on Creative Thinking,” Marily Oppezzo and Daniel L. Schwartz reported four experiments comparing walking and sitting. Participants completed short creative-thinking tasks, including finding alternate uses for ordinary objects, making compound word associations, and generating analogies. The paper is available through PubMed.
The clearest benefit was for divergent thinking: producing multiple possible ideas or answers. On the alternate-uses task, 81% of participants showed increased creativity scores while walking. On the compound remote-associates task, which calls for finding a specific connection, 23% did. Those figures describe the share of participants whose scores increased—not the size of an increase in creative output.
Stanford’s account of the experiments reports that average creative output rose by 60% in one indoor comparison where participants sat and then walked on a treadmill. That result belongs to that particular experiment; it is not a general estimate of how much more productive a person will be at work. In a separate analogy task, outdoor walkers produced more novel, higher-quality analogies. Stanford reported that all outdoor walkers, versus half of the seated-inside participants, generated at least one high-quality, novel analogy in that task. These results are task-specific, not a guarantee that any outdoor walk improves creative work.

Some of the ideation benefit remained when participants sat after walking: the walk-then-sit condition outperformed sitting twice. The evidence supports a short-term effect on task performance, not an improvement lasting through an entire workday.
Walking and sitting suit different phases of creative work
| Work situation | What the evidence suggests | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Brainstorming or finding alternatives | Walking performed better on divergent-thinking tasks in the experiments. | Try walking while generating options; capture ideas by voice or notes if practical. |
| Choosing, checking, or refining one answer | Walking did not reliably improve convergent tasks and was mildly worse in one comparison. | Sit down if movement makes focused work harder. |
| Writing, drawing, typing, or editing | The experiments tested ideation tasks, not sustained production while moving. | Separate idea generation from execution if working while walking is awkward. |
This division is a practical interpretation of the task results, not a workflow directly tested by the researchers. The evidence does not show that walking is the better setting for every part of creative work.

Does the walk need to be outdoors?
No. The experiments included indoor treadmill walking as well as outdoor walking, and Stanford’s summary says both settings boosted creative inspiration. The outdoor condition had an advantage on one analogy outcome, but that does not establish that every outdoor environment is better or that going outside is necessary. A comfortable indoor walk is a reasonable way to try the approach.
Stanford’s report describes 176 college students and other adults across the four experiments. Walking or sitting sessions lasted 5 to 16 minutes, depending on the task. Those session lengths describe the study conditions; the experiments did not establish an ideal duration, pace, or weekly schedule.

What later evidence adds—and what remains uncertain
A 2017 experimental study found better divergent-thinking performance while walking than standing, and while standing than sitting or lying. Its authors proposed a cognitive-control explanation, but that is a hypothesis rather than an established mechanism. The study extends the evidence about bodily state and divergent thinking; it does not prove that a walking desk raises professional output.
The original experiments measured short laboratory tasks, not sustained writing, design quality, business performance, or a full workday’s output. Stanford’s lab summary identifies the dose-response relationship and environmental characteristics as questions for further study. There is no established best walking speed, duration, or frequency in these sources.

How to try it without overcomplicating your setup
- Use walking for the idea-generation phase. When you feel stuck, try a comfortable walk while looking for possibilities, alternate angles, or examples.
- Capture ideas in a way that feels safe and manageable. Dictate a voice note or pause to record a thought; do not force yourself to type or read while walking.
- Return to sitting for focused work. Sort, verify, select, and develop the strongest ideas in the position that lets you concentrate and work accurately.
- Choose a setting you can use comfortably. Outdoor walking is not required. A treadmill is optional; the study did not test consumer walking pads, desk treadmills, or specific products.
This is a low-stakes experiment, not a prescription. Compare how you feel and what you produce during your own brainstorming sessions, without assuming that a particular number of minutes or a walking desk will improve all-day productivity.
