Walking may help with constipation, but current guidance does not show that it works better than other gentle exercise—or that any exercise reliably relieves symptoms on its own. Treat movement as one practical self-care option: choose activity that feels comfortable and accessible, and use it alongside other appropriate measures.
Can walking help constipation?
It may. The U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says, “Getting regular physical activity may help relieve your symptoms.” Its guidance does not specify a particular exercise or promise relief. The UK National Health Service (NHS) names a daily walk or run as an option that can help make bowel movements more regular.

These are reasons to try movement if it suits you, not proof that walking is a constipation treatment or that it is the most effective exercise. Neither source sets a constipation-specific pace, duration, or weekly target.
Is walking better than other gentle exercises?
The available evidence does not establish that walking is better than cycling, stretching, yoga, or light resistance exercise. The adult constipation clinical practice guideline discusses walking, running, and resistance exercise, but reports mixed findings. It does not provide a reliable ranking of activities.

| Option | What the sources support | Practical takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | NHS patient guidance suggests a daily walk or run; the adult clinical guideline includes walking among forms of activity discussed. NHS adult constipation guidance; adult clinical practice guideline. | A convenient choice for many people, but not a proven winner for constipation. |
| Other aerobic activity, such as easy cycling | The reviewed sources do not establish a head-to-head comparison for specific gentle activities. Adult clinical practice guideline. | Consider it if comfortable and accessible; evidence here does not show it is equivalent or superior. |
| Stretching, yoga, or light resistance exercise | The guideline discusses resistance exercise, but the reviewed sources do not establish that stretching or yoga specifically relieves constipation. Adult clinical practice guideline. | These can be comfortable ways to move, but should not be presented as proven constipation treatments on this evidence. |
| Ordinary movement without a structured workout | NIDDK advises regular physical activity but gives no minimum constipation-specific dose. NIDDK treatment for constipation. | Feasible regular movement is a reasonable aim; the sources do not support a required exercise target. |
In choosing, prioritize comfort, accessibility, and what you can keep up with. If mobility limits, pain, or another health concern affects your options, ask a clinician for individualized guidance rather than trying to meet an arbitrary exercise prescription.
What does the evidence say?
The adult constipation guideline describes studies in which physical activity—including walking, running, or resistance exercise—reduced intestinal transit time, alongside other studies that did not find this effect. It characterizes the evidence as scant and methodologically biased. Its recommendation for regular physical exercise adapted to the patient is weak and based on low-quality evidence.
Rank #2
The guideline also describes one randomized trial involving 43 middle-aged, sedentary people with chronic constipation. Weekly stool count did not change, although the percentage of hard, incomplete, or forced stools fell significantly. That trial is a limited finding, not an estimate of how often exercise works for people generally.

How to include movement in constipation self-care
Movement is one part of self-care, not a substitute for other appropriate treatment. NHS and NIDDK guidance also covers dietary fiber and fluids; the NHS additionally suggests a regular time and place to use the toilet, responding when the urge comes, and using a footstool to raise the knees above the hips. The NHS recommends increasing fiber gradually and speaking with a pharmacist if diet and lifestyle changes are not helping.
NIDDK gives a general adult fiber range of 22 to 34 grams per day, depending on age and sex, and advises increasing fiber gradually. This is dietary guidance, not an exercise target or a necessary amount for every person. NIDDK also discusses bowel training, over-the-counter medicines, and clinician-directed treatments; a health professional can advise what is appropriate for your situation.
When to seek medical advice
Contact a doctor if constipation does not improve with self-care or is long-term. Seek medical advice for rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, continual abdominal pain, or another sign of a medical problem, as NIDDK advises. Do not rely on exercise alone when symptoms persist or warning signs appear.
