A 2026 study found that groups of freely roaming pedestrians tended to rotate counterclockwise—and that the same pattern appeared when people walked alone. The result suggests that crowd rotation can begin with individual walking tendencies, but it does not mean everyone turns left, and the researchers do not yet know what causes the bias.
What “turning left” means in this study
Viewed from above, a counterclockwise path curves left. In five experimental studies conducted in Spain and Japan, researchers observed that freely moving pedestrians showed a recurring tendency toward this direction. They measured movement patterns across groups and settings; they did not find that every participant followed a left-curving path.
The paper uses “rotational polarization” to describe the group’s overall direction of motion. In Spanish arena experiments, its time-averaged value was consistently positive—around 0.2 across conditions that varied crowd size and the proportion of people classified as right-turners. That is a study-specific motion statistic, not a finding that 20% of participants turned left. The authors define positive polarization as counterclockwise motion. Where the researchers found the pattern
Enclosed arenas in Spain
In the arena experiments, participants were asked to move freely while keeping apart from one another. The group’s counterclockwise tendency persisted as researchers varied group size and the share of participants identified as right-turners. It also remained in tests involving left-handed participants, weakening the idea that the group result was explained simply by handedness or by the proportion of right-turners.

An open schoolyard
The researchers tested more than 100 teenage students in a 50-by-60-metre outdoor schoolyard. Counterclockwise group rotation persisted in this open setting, where the boundary effects of an enclosed arena were less relevant. That makes enclosure geometry or wall-following alone an inadequate explanation for the observed pattern.
Experiments in Japan
The effect also appeared in Japan, where customary pedestrian side-stepping patterns differ from those in Spain. This finding weighs against an explanation based only on local collision-avoidance conventions.

A nursery activity with young children
In a Japanese nursery activity involving children about five years old, the reported polarization exceeded 0.7. That value belongs to this particular rhythmic group-play setting; it should not be treated as a measure of how young children walk in everyday situations.
People walking alone
More than 200 volunteers also walked one at a time in an empty arena. The authors’ account says a clear majority still moved counterclockwise. Because this tendency appeared without other walkers to coordinate with, the researchers argue that individual locomotor behaviour can seed the larger group pattern rather than the rotation arising solely through social interaction. What the study says—and does not say—about the cause
The authors report no relationship between the observed tendency and handedness, dominant foot, dominant eye, or sex. They suggest inner-ear asymmetry as a possible lead, not an established explanation. As coauthors Iñaki Echeverría Huarte, Angel Garcimartín Montero, and Iker Zuriguel Ballaz put it: “We still don’t know what causes this bias at the individual level.”
The result challenges the idea that social dynamics alone shape pedestrian motion: individuals may bring a small directional tendency into a group, where it contributes to a shared rotation. But the study does not establish how that tendency arises, whether it operates in every everyday setting, or whether a particular intervention could change it.

How this differs from blindfolded people walking in circles
A 2009 study examined a different question: whether people could maintain a straight course in unfamiliar surroundings, especially when blindfolded. Some blindfolded paths formed small circles, but the average directional bias across participants was not significantly different from zero. Only three of 15 participants showed strong, consistent veering in one direction. The authors suggested that accumulating sensorimotor noise, without an external reference to recalibrate a person’s sense of straight ahead, could explain why some paths curved. (Souman and colleagues, Current Biology, 2009)
That loss-of-direction result is not the same as the 2026 finding. The newer experiments studied free roaming, with visual references available, and measured counterclockwise movement in groups as well as in individuals; the earlier work studied attempts to walk straight without reliable directional cues. It would be misleading to treat the two as proof of one shared mechanism.

What it could mean for shared spaces
The 2026 authors note that understanding pedestrian movement may matter for planning and managing shared spaces such as transport hubs. Their experiments, however, do not demonstrate that a particular layout or intervention improves movement or safety. The result is evidence about a recurring direction in the tested settings, not a ready-made design rule.
