For most adults, the U.S. baseline is at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week, and brisk walking can count. You can spread that activity across shorter sessions; aim for a pace that makes you breathe harder but still lets you talk.
How much should I walk each week?
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. Brisk walking is one example. The CDC also recommends muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days a week. Those strength sessions are a separate part of the guidelines, not extra walking minutes. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) describes 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week as the range for attaining the most health benefits, alongside muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days. These figures serve different purposes: 150 minutes is the CDC’s minimum weekly target, while 150–300 minutes is HHS’s range associated with the most benefits. HHS summary of the Physical Activity Guidelines
You do not have to do all your walking in one outing. The CDC says activity can be divided into shorter sessions; for example, 30 minutes on five days reaches 150 minutes. CDC adult activity guidance

Does a short walk count?
Yes. Shorter sessions can contribute to your weekly activity total. In the UK, the NHS says a brisk 10-minute daily walk counts toward its recommendation of 150 minutes of weekly exercise for adults aged 19–64. That NHS example is specific to that age range and UK guidance. NHS: Walking for health
How do I know if I’m walking fast enough?
Use effort rather than a universal speed. At a moderate intensity, your breathing and heart rate rise: you can talk, but you cannot sing. The CDC notes that the same activity can feel more intense to one person than another. CDC: What Counts as Physical Activity for Adults

The NHS describes brisk walking as around 3 miles per hour and faster than a stroll, but pace is only a rough reference. Your effort and the talk test are more useful than trying to match one speed. NHS: Walking for health

What benefits can I expect?
The CDC describes benefits of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity generally; they are not guaranteed effects of walking for any one person. One session can have immediate benefits, including better sleep quality, reduced feelings of anxiety and lower blood pressure. Regular activity is associated with lower risks of dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), depression, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and weight gain; it can also improve bone health and reduce the risk of falls. What if I’m not very active?
If you can walk, start with what feels manageable and increase your distance gradually. The CDC says some physical activity is better than none, and the NHS advises people who are not very active to build up their walking distance gradually. Neither source sets one progression schedule for everyone. CDC: Adding Physical Activity as an Adult · NHS: Walking for health
What should I wear, and what do I need to bring?
Comfortable shoes or trainers that support your feet and do not cause blisters are a sensible place to start. The NHS says specialist walking shoes may be worth considering for longer walks or more challenging routes, but they are not a prerequisite for beginning. U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines describe walking as easy to start and maintain, without special skills, facilities or expensive equipment. Before you start: when should I consult a clinician?
The CDC says moderate-effort activity is safe for most people. If you have a chronic condition such as heart disease, arthritis or diabetes, ask your doctor what types and amounts of activity are right for you. The CDC separately advises talking with a doctor before starting vigorous activity if you have been inactive, have a disability or have overweight. This is not a general warning that walking is unsafe. CDC: Adding Physical Activity as an Adult
