Microsoft Teams Walkie Talkie is a mobile push-to-talk app for instant voice communication in Teams channels. To use it, open Walkie Talkie in the Teams app on a supported Android or iOS device, connect to the same channel as your teammates, and hold Talk while speaking.
It is not supported in Teams for Windows, Mac, or the web. If Walkie Talkie is missing, an administrator must allow the app and its access policy; pinning it to the app bar is a separate step.

Who can use Walkie Talkie
Microsoft includes Walkie Talkie with all paid Teams licenses; an additional Teams Phone license is not required for ordinary use in the Teams mobile app. Teams Phone and Shared Device licensing rules may apply to supported Teams phone-device scenarios.
Walkie Talkie is available in Teams mobile for iOS and Android. It is not supported in Teams for Windows, Mac, or the web. If the app is absent, ask your administrator to check app availability and access policies, then check whether it has been pinned to your app bar.
Admin setup: allow access and pin the app
Administrators should check organization-wide app availability, the user’s app-access policy, and app pinning. Allowing the app does not automatically pin it for every user.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- In the Teams admin center, go to Teams apps > Manage apps, search for Walkie Talkie, open it, and set its status to Allowed. In tenants using unified app management, availability may also be managed through Microsoft 365 admin center’s Integrated apps.
- Check that the user’s app permission policy or app-centric access configuration allows Walkie Talkie. An app allowed in Manage apps may still be blocked by the user’s access policy.
- For E-license users, use Teams apps > Setup policies to add Walkie Talkie to the applicable policy’s pinned apps and assign that policy. If more than 10 apps are pinned, put Walkie Talkie among the first 10 to show it in the primary app-bar area.
- For Microsoft 365 F-license users, the Tailored frontline app experience pins Walkie Talkie and other frontline apps by default when enabled. Tenant-level blocks and access restrictions still apply.
Microsoft also says Walkie Talkie may be pre-pinned for E-license users when Public preview is enabled.
Open and pin Walkie Talkie on a phone
- Open Teams on your iPhone, iPad, or supported Android device and sign in to your work account.
- Tap Walkie Talkie on the Teams app bar. If it is not visible, swipe up from the bottom of the app bar or tap More.
- To pin it manually, swipe up from the app bar, tap Edit, then under Edit navigation drag Walkie Talkie from More Apps to the top section.
Connect to channels and choose where to speak
- In Walkie Talkie, tap Select channels.
- Select up to five channels. If you want to hear activity on all selected channels, turn on Listen to multiple channels.
- Check which channel is active; it appears next to the > indicator and is highlighted in the pinned-channel list. Tap another pinned channel to make it active before speaking there.
- To disconnect, tap Stop listening. In the background experience, tap Leave when that option appears.
You can listen to multiple selected channels when that option is enabled, but can transmit on only the active channel. Closing a transmission does not disconnect you; stop listening or leave the channel to disconnect. Favorite channels appear at the top in alphabetical order, and Walkie Talkie remembers the last channel used unless you change the connection behavior.

Send and receive transmissions
On the Walkie Talkie screen, select and hold the large Talk button while speaking, then release it to let others transmit. A circle around the Talk button and a PTT chime indicate that you are speaking.
You can also use a supported device’s dedicated PTT button. With a compatible wired headset’s play/pause or answer/end-call button, tap to start transmitting and tap again to stop.
Connecting to a channel means you remain connected to receive transmissions until you stop listening or leave. The participant count includes you. Tap the participant icon to see who is currently connected, but treat the roster as an approximate indicator: network conditions or presence state can make it inaccurate.
Background use, lock screen, and settings
Walkie Talkie can continue working while Teams is in the background. With a supported headset or device PTT button, you can communicate while the phone is locked. You cannot switch channels from the lock screen; open Walkie Talkie in Teams to change the active channel. On iOS, lock-screen use requires Walkie Talkie to be the only PTT app running in the background.
To open Walkie Talkie settings, tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > Walkie Talkie. Available options include noise suppression, Acoustic Echo Cancellation, beep and vibration alerts, wired-headset transmission settings, auto-connect, and Test Network Quality.

Microsoft lists validated devices and accessories, but says they are not Teams certified. Examples include BlueParrott B450-XT and C300-XT headsets, Jabra Perform headsets, Klein Electronics headsets, Samsung Galaxy XCover and Tab Active devices, Sonim XP8, and various Zebra devices. Check Microsoft’s Walkie Talkie documentation for current models and firmware details.
On Samsung devices, configure the XCover or Active key under Settings > Advanced Features > XCover/Active key, enable Control XCover key with app, and select Teams. On Sonim XP8, go to Settings > Programmable Keys > Select PTT Key app and select Teams. Microsoft’s supported Zebra devices use the dedicated LEFT_TRIGGER_2 PTT button by default.
Bluetooth permissions
On Android 12 and later, Bluetooth accessories require the Android Nearby devices permission. Location permission is not required to connect through the Bluetooth Low Energy stack. If Teams lacks Nearby devices permission, it may prompt for Bluetooth permission even when no accessory is connected. MDM policies that block Bluetooth can prevent an accessory from working.

Network requirements and quality
Walkie Talkie requires internet connectivity and works over Wi-Fi or cellular data. Microsoft estimates usage at approximately 20 Kb/s while sending or receiving audio, with negligible usage while idle. It may work in low-bandwidth conditions, but not without connectivity.
Use Settings > Walkie Talkie > Test Network Quality to check the connection. Microsoft documents target latency below 300 ms and jitter below 30 ms; latency above 500 ms indicates poor network quality. High jitter can cause crackling or broken-up audio.
Troubleshooting
Why is Walkie Talkie missing?
- Confirm the administrator has set Walkie Talkie to Allowed under Teams apps > Manage apps.
- Ask the administrator to check your app permission policy or app-centric access configuration.
- Check whether Walkie Talkie is included in your app setup policy or tailored frontline app experience.
- Use the Teams mobile app on a supported iOS or Android device; desktop and web clients are not supported.
Why can I hear an alert but not the audio?
- Set the device volume to at least 50 percent.
- Check that the headset is connected correctly.
- Run Settings > Walkie Talkie > Test Network Quality.
- Disconnect from and reconnect to the channel. If the problem continues, send logs to Microsoft.
Why are transmissions missing?
- Confirm sender and receiver are connected to the same channel.
- Check the network test, then disconnect and reconnect both users.
- Restart Teams and check that the affected user is not in Do not disturb, focus time, or quiet time.
- Make sure notifications are enabled. These presence modes can block transmissions or prevent them from being reproduced.
Why is the participant list inaccurate?
Network state or Do not disturb status can make the roster inaccurate. Disconnect and reconnect, switch channels, and send at least two transmissions. On iOS, close and reopen Walkie Talkie.
Why do I hear static or have headset problems?
On iOS, Walkie Talkie does not support noise cancellation or voice isolation. On Android, enable noise cancellation in Walkie Talkie settings if the device supports it. Also check for headset damage, a dirty or obstructed microphone or speaker, an incomplete connection, low wireless-headset battery, incompatible behavior, or device firmware and operating-system issues. Test the headset in another app to see whether the issue is specific to Walkie Talkie.
Walkie Talkie usage and performance reports
Authorized administrators can run the Walkie Talkie usage and performance report in the Teams admin center. The report is available to Teams Administrators, Global Readers, Report Readers, and Global Administrators, and supports data up to 30 days before the current date.

The CSV can include tenant, user, device, channel, team, platform, app-version, participant, transmission-duration, packet, audio-duration, and call-status information. Microsoft defines FAILURE as a transmission problem, with network or degraded audio among possible causes. ABANDONED means the device received the transmission but did not reproduce it; examples include Do not disturb or the device being engaged in another call.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Walkie Talkie in Teams for Windows, Mac, or the web?
No. Microsoft supports Walkie Talkie in the Teams mobile app for Android and iOS, not in the desktop or web clients.

What should I give IT when Walkie Talkie fails?
