It depends on where your encoder connects. If it sends a stream directly to YouTube over RTMPS, check that outbound TCP port 443 is allowed when outbound traffic is restricted. Open inbound TCP port 1935 on Vultr only when your Vultr VM is running an RTMP ingest service that listens on that port. These are different connections; inbound 1935 is not a general requirement for streaming directly to YouTube.
First identify which connection you are using
A YouTube live setup may send video directly from an encoder to YouTube, or send it first to an RTMP server on your Vultr VM, which then relays it. The firewall rule depends on that path.

| Question | Direct to YouTube over RTMPS | Vultr-hosted RTMP ingest or relay |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the encoder connect? | The current stream URL from YouTube Live Control Room | Your configured RTMP service on the Vultr VM |
| Which Vultr rule may matter? | Outbound connectivity to YouTube; check TCP 443 if outbound traffic is restricted | Inbound TCP 1935 if the RTMP service is configured to listen on that port |
| Is inbound TCP 1935 required? | No | For this ingest path, only if the service is listening there |
YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and advises specifying destination port 443 if needed to resolve a connection or SSL issue. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. Vultr’s Broadcaster Marketplace App guide identifies 1935 as the RTMP port for that server-ingest workflow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Set up a direct encoder-to-YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open the relevant live stream in Live Control Room and copy its current stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Use the values shown for that stream rather than guessing an endpoint. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to get them; its live stream settings guidance covers stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password.
- Confirm the connection path is encoder or Vultr VM → YouTube, not encoder → Vultr RTMP server. In the direct setup, you do not need to open inbound 1935 on Vultr just because the stream uses RTMP-family technology.
- If RTMPS cannot connect or reports an SSL/connection error, verify the URL and check whether outbound TCP 443 is permitted from the machine sending the stream. This is an egress rule: it allows the VM or encoder to reach YouTube. Whether a Vultr rule is needed depends on your actual firewall policy.
Open inbound 1935 for a Vultr RTMP ingest server
Use this path only if an RTMP ingest service is actually installed, configured, and listening on the Vultr VM. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide discusses TCP 1935 for its Broadcaster workflow; a different server configuration may use a different port.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
- Confirm the RTMP service’s configured listening port and the public IP address or hostname the encoder should use.
- In Vultr Console, go to Products → Network → Firewall, select the correct Firewall Group, and verify that it is attached to the intended instance. Add an inbound TCP rule for port 1935 only if that matches the service’s configuration.
- Limit the rule’s source IP range to the encoder’s known public IP where practical. If encoders connect from changing or multiple locations, scope access to the genuine operational requirement rather than assuming every source must be allowed.
- Check the VM’s own firewall as well. UFW, iptables, or firewalld can block traffic even when the Vultr Firewall Group permits it.
- For a relay, separately confirm the VM can make its outbound connection to YouTube. Inbound access from encoder to Vultr does not automatically permit outbound publishing from Vultr.
Vultr explains how Firewall Group rules filter traffic by protocol, port, and source in its firewall rules guide. Its firewall troubleshooting guide distinguishes the cloud Firewall Group from the instance-level firewall and recommends checking both inbound and outbound traffic.
Verify the rule at both firewall layers
- Vultr Firewall Group: Check the selected group, its inbound and outbound rules, and whether it is attached to the right instance.
- Operating-system firewall: Inspect the active UFW, iptables, or firewalld configuration inside the VM. A cloud rule and an OS rule are separate controls.
- Service listener: For the 1935 workflow, confirm the RTMP service is running and listening on the port you opened. A firewall opening cannot create a listener.
- Direction: For direct RTMPS publishing, investigate outbound access. For an encoder feeding a Vultr ingest server, investigate inbound access to that server, then the relay’s outbound route to YouTube.
Test before relying on the stream
- Start a test stream using the exact URL and key for the intended YouTube stream, or the configured Vultr ingest endpoint if using a relay.
- Check the encoder’s connection status and error message, then inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- If it fails, change only the rule relevant to the blocked network leg and retest. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.
Firewall connectivity is separate from video bitrate and available upload bandwidth. A successful port connection does not guarantee that the stream’s video settings or internet capacity are suitable.

Troubleshooting common connection failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Direct RTMPS publishing fails to connect | Incorrect or stale Live Control Room URL or key, or outbound traffic is restricted | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room. If the connection or SSL error persists, check outbound TCP 443 from the sending machine. |
| Encoder cannot reach the Vultr server on 1935 | No inbound rule, wrong Firewall Group or instance, OS firewall blocking it, or no service listening on that port | Verify the group attachment and inbound TCP rule, inspect the VM firewall, and confirm the RTMP service is configured and running on 1935. |
| Encoder reaches Vultr but the YouTube stream does not start | The relay’s outbound connection or YouTube publishing settings may be the failing leg | Check outbound connectivity from the VM, the relay configuration, and the YouTube URL and key used by the relay. |
| A rule appears open but connections still fail | The cloud Firewall Group and instance firewall are separate layers; the rule may also be attached to the wrong VM or have an overly narrow source range | Check both firewall layers, instance attachment, rule direction, protocol, port, and source scope. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep pre-recorded video streaming to YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a Vultr RTMP server you configure yourself. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
