Vultr vs Hetzner: what matters for a YouTube loop
A continuous stream sends data to YouTube for as long as it runs, so outbound traffic is often the first cost to estimate. The useful comparison is not simply “2 TB vs 20 TB”: Vultr describes a per-account allocation plus instance bandwidth accrued hourly, while Hetzner’s included traffic depends on server family and location. Compare the allowance and price for the precise plan you would deploy.

Estimate how much bandwidth the loop will use
Use the bitrate of the actual outgoing stream and its intended runtime. For a rough decimal estimate, multiply bitrate in megabits per second by seconds streamed, then divide by eight to convert bits to bytes. A continuously running stream at 1 Mbps sends about 10.8 GB in 24 hours, or about 324 GB in a 30-day month, before protocol overhead. At 8 Mbps, the same estimate is about 86.4 GB per day and 2.59 TB in 30 days. Actual transfer can differ; allow for overhead and any concurrent backup feed.
- Use the output bitrate sent to YouTube, not the source file’s size or bitrate.
- Calculate each simultaneous feed separately and add them together.
- Compare the result with the applicable monthly allocation and investigate how the provider measures and bills overage.
- Recalculate if you change codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or the number of feeds.
YouTube’s recommendations depend on codec and frame rate. For H.264, it lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30; use the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings guide rather than treating those examples as universal settings.
Choose the right workload before choosing a server
An FFmpeg loop can either relay an already encoded file or do substantial processing. A relay is not the same workload as transcoding, changing resolution, or generating video. This comparison has no matched provider benchmark, so a server family or advertised CPU count alone does not establish that it can encode your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate continuously.

- Observe whether playback stays real-time and stable, and monitor CPU, memory, network transfer, output continuity and FFmpeg errors.
- Repeat with any planned backup process running, because simultaneous feeds add traffic and compute load.
Configure YouTube Live correctly
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. Enabling a first live stream can take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and initial setup in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Encoder and network settings
- YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video in its encoder guidance. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed in transit.
- Use constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Match the bitrate to the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate using the current encoder settings table.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% spare upload bandwidth beyond the total streaming bitrate. A VPS network connection and the source-file transfer path should both be considered during testing. See YouTube streaming tips.
- Use the stream key and ingest URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
Start and monitor the stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and complete any required channel verification or first-time enablement.
- In Live Control Room, create or select the stream, then copy its stream key and server URL into your FFmpeg setup.
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming signal. Check the stream preview in Live Control Room before making the feed public or scheduling it.
- Monitor audio and video quality continuously, as YouTube recommends. A successful initial connection does not prove the loop will recover from a later process, network or ingest failure.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance includes a cloud-tool example for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. That is not blanket approval for every loop or content choice, nor a guarantee of monetization or uninterrupted streaming. Ensure that the video and audio comply with YouTube’s rules and that you have the necessary rights. Repeated content can also raise separate monetization-policy questions; no particular content format is guaranteed to qualify.

For either provider, calculate the server charge for the time it will exist, expected traffic and overage, and any extras you select. For Hetzner, account for public IP charges; check both providers’ current prices for your chosen location and server. A server that is merely switched off may still incur charges at Hetzner, so deletion and recreation are different from stopping a process.

- Vultr: include the plan’s hourly bandwidth allocation and any applicable overage beyond the quota. The cited overage rate is $0.01 per GB.
- Hetzner: apply the traffic allowance for the exact product family and location, then verify current over-use pricing and public IP costs.
- Both: include compute, storage, backups or other selected services where applicable. A cheap transfer allowance is not a low total bill if the server or add-ons cost more.
When each provider is the better fit
Consider Vultr when
- Your chosen region and plan have a suitable current price and enough combined account and instance bandwidth for the calculated egress.
- You value its documented hourly allocation model and have priced any traffic beyond that allocation.
- A test confirms the selected instance can handle your specific FFmpeg relay or encoding job.
Consider Hetzner when
- The exact Cloud family and region suit your workload and its listed included traffic covers your estimate.
- You have included any public IP charge and verified current terms for over-use.
- Your test confirms the chosen server can sustain the intended stream; the SLA is not a promise of uninterrupted live video.
There is no evidence here to name a universal price or performance winner. The answer changes with location, plan, bitrate, processing workload and current terms.
Troubleshoot common loop-server problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube | Incorrect ingest URL or key, stream not enabled, or channel not yet eligible. | Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, verify channel eligibility, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error output. |
| Stream starts but YouTube reports poor connection | Insufficient upload headroom, unstable network, or output bitrate settings that do not match the chosen format. | Check the actual output bitrate and available upload capacity; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and use the appropriate codec/resolution/frame-rate row. |
| Video is choppy or falls behind | The server may not keep up with the chosen processing workload, or the source/network path may be unstable. | Check FFmpeg speed and resource use. Test the same codec and media on the selected server; reduce processing demands or choose a more suitable plan if it cannot sustain real time. |
| Traffic exceeds the allowance | The stream bitrate, runtime, concurrent backup, or metering assumptions were underestimated. | Recalculate egress from the actual bitrate and hours streamed, then check current account, instance or region-specific terms and overage charges. |
| Stream stops after an interruption | The FFmpeg process or connection ended and did not restart, or YouTube stopped receiving the feed. | Inspect logs and process supervision, confirm the source and network recovered, and verify the incoming signal again in Live Control Room. Do not assume a VPS plan or provider SLA will automatically restore the stream. |
