Vultr Cloud Compute vs DigitalOcean for Always-On YouTube Streaming

A practical Vultr vs DigitalOcean comparison for continuous YouTube streams, focused on encoding versus relay, outbound transfer, plan costs, and ingest settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither Vultr nor DigitalOcean is a universal winner for always-on YouTube streaming. Your video’s bitrate determines the outbound traffic bill, while your workload determines whether you need a basic relay, CPU capacity for encoding, or a GPU for a specific workflow. DigitalOcean explicitly positions CPU Optimized Droplets for media streaming and documents pooled transfer and overage pricing. Vultr offers streaming-oriented plans and an OBS-based Broadcaster app, but the sources do not establish a head-to-head performance or total-cost winner. Compare the exact instance, region, transfer allowance, and billing terms before committing.

First decide whether the server encodes or relays

A cloud VM used for streaming can do two very different jobs:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Relay an already encoded stream: The video is encoded on another device or service, and the VM forwards it to YouTube. Sustained network transfer is likely to matter more to the bill than intensive video processing, though you still need to test the chosen instance and network path.
  • Encode or transcode: The VM processes video before sending it to YouTube. This requires sizing for the real CPU or GPU workload; a plan that can relay a stream is not automatically suitable for encoding it.

Vultr’s OBS-based Broadcaster Marketplace app is a particular GPU-backed workflow, and its guide lists a Vultr A16 GPU instance as a prerequisite. That does not mean every stream needs a GPU. DigitalOcean’s plan guidance identifies CPU Optimized Droplets as suitable for media streaming, but vendor use-case descriptions are not independent performance tests. Test representative motion and audio on the instance you intend to use.

How the providers compare

Factor DigitalOcean Vultr
Streaming-related options Basic, CPU Optimized, General Purpose, and Memory Optimized Droplets; CPU Optimized is identified as suitable for media streaming. DigitalOcean pricing Pricing lists optimized compute plans with streaming use cases. Its Broadcaster Marketplace app is an OBS-based setup with an A16 GPU prerequisite for that app workflow. Vultr pricing · Vultr Broadcaster guide
Example plan and included transfer Retrieved examples include a 512 MiB Basic Droplet at $4/month with 500 GiB and a 2 GiB Basic Droplet at $12/month with 2,000 GiB. These are examples from the pricing page, not timeless recommendations; availability and prices can change. DigitalOcean pricing Plan-level bandwidth allowances and prices are listed, and regional price variation is noted. The exact current plan, location, and terms need to be checked for your deployment. Vultr pricing
Outbound transfer rules Outbound transfer is pooled at team level; inbound transfer is free. Additional outbound transfer is $0.01/GiB. Allowance accrues over the billing cycle and unused transfer does not roll over. Documentation last verified 14 September 2026. DigitalOcean bandwidth documentation Bandwidth usage is calculated from outbound data transfer; inbound traffic does not count against bandwidth limits. Documentation updated 16 December 2025. The available documentation does not establish the comparable selected plan’s overage rate. Vultr bandwidth documentation
Head-to-head reliability or performance result Not established by the available official material. Not established by the available official material.

These are different product paths, not evidence that one provider is faster or more dependable. DigitalOcean’s documented pooled transfer can make its allowance more flexible for multiple Droplets in a team. Vultr’s allowance and regional pricing need to be checked against the exact instance you select. Do not compare a low compute price with another provider’s all-in cost without accounting for traffic and the workload.

Estimate bandwidth before choosing a plan

YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest rates include 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 42 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps, and 50 Mbps for 4K at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations—not a guarantee of viewer quality or of any provider’s network performance. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

For continuous streaming, a useful estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × seconds × 1,000,000 ÷ 8, then convert bytes to decimal GB. This excludes protocol overhead and other traffic:

Continuous bitrate Approximate outbound data per day Approximate outbound data in 30 days
6 Mbps 64.8 GB 1,944 GB
50 Mbps 540 GB 16,200 GB

These are arithmetic estimates, not provider statistics. A 30-day 6 Mbps stream is about 1.94 TB in decimal units before overhead. Provider allowances may be stated in GiB or TB, so compare units carefully rather than treating them as interchangeable. Add headroom for overhead, reconnects, monitoring traffic, and any other outbound use on the instance or team.

Choose a plan using the full monthly workload

  1. Set the stream profile. Decide the resolution, frame rate, codec, and target bitrate. Use YouTube’s ingest guidance as a starting point, then test the actual content and encoder.
  2. Determine where encoding happens. If a separate device produces the encoded stream, evaluate the cloud VM as a relay. If the VM encodes or transcodes, size CPU or GPU against a representative test rather than assuming a low-cost instance will suffice.
  3. Calculate outbound transfer. Convert your sustained bitrate into monthly data and include reasonable overhead and other traffic. Check whether the plan’s allowance covers that amount.
  4. Compare current plan terms for the exact region. Include compute, memory, storage, transfer allowance, and any overage charge. DigitalOcean documents $0.01/GiB beyond its included allowance and team-level pooling. For Vultr, confirm the selected plan’s current overage charge and how its allowance is applied; the documentation cited here does not establish a comparable selected-plan overage rate.
  5. Run a representative stream. Check encoder load, reconnect behavior, monitoring, restart automation, and YouTube stream health before relying on the setup continuously. Official YouTube guidance recommends testing representative motion and audio and monitoring health; it does not establish either provider’s comparative uptime or automatic recovery.

Pricing and availability can change, and Vultr notes regional price variation. Recheck DigitalOcean’s pricing page and Vultr’s pricing page for the precise plan and location before estimating production costs.

Set up the YouTube ingest correctly

YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts traffic to and through Google’s servers. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, CBR bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Follow the settings required by the encoder and workflow you choose; a protocol or codec option does not eliminate the need to test stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Use the stream key from YouTube Studio in the encoder or relay configuration, keep it private, and verify that the selected ingest protocol and bitrate match the stream you tested. Confirm the channel’s live-streaming access and current YouTube requirements in YouTube Studio before scheduling an always-on broadcast. YouTube’s ingest recommendations do not grant rights to use the video or audio: use material you have rights to stream and check applicable copyright rules. A technical ability to loop or relay a video is not permission to broadcast it.

Which one should you choose?

  • Consider DigitalOcean if its current Droplet options fit your compute needs and you value the documented team-level transfer pool and published overage rate. Its CPU Optimized offering is explicitly identified for media streaming, but verify performance with your workload.
  • Consider Vultr if its current region, instance, and bandwidth allowance suit your cost and deployment needs, or if the OBS-based Broadcaster app’s GPU workflow is specifically what you need. The A16 GPU requirement is for that app path, not a general YouTube streaming requirement.
  • Do not declare a cost winner from headline compute prices. The stream’s bitrate can create substantial sustained outbound traffic, and the available information does not fully establish Vultr’s selected-plan overage cost.
  • Do not declare a reliability winner from these sources. They do not provide a measured head-to-head benchmark or comparative uptime/recovery evidence.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded video rather than an OBS-managed VM, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the uploaded video looping without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams at the quality uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
