1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you want a prerecorded YouTube channel to stay live without running a server yourself, start with a managed cloud service such as StreamNeo. It keeps uploaded videos looping to YouTube from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. If you want to operate the encoder and server, Amazon Lightsail and DigitalOcean’s SRS Marketplace app are alternatives to Vultr; a dedicated encoder such as AJA HELO Plus is another route. These options do different jobs, so compare administration, looping controls, bandwidth, and recovery—not just VM prices.
Choose by how much of the streaming work you want to manage
A prerecorded video does not become a YouTube live broadcast just because it is stored on a server. An encoder must send a live stream to YouTube using the channel’s stream key. The main decision is whether you want a managed service to handle that process, dedicated encoding hardware, or a virtual machine and streaming stack you administer yourself.

| Option | Best fit | What the available documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Creators who want cloud looping without operating a VM or leaving a computer on | Uploads videos for continuous YouTube streaming; one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. |
| Gyre | People seeking managed prerecorded-video streaming | YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded video. Check its current limits, scheduling, reliability, and pricing directly. |
| AJA HELO Plus | Operators who prefer a dedicated encoder appliance | YouTube’s directory describes a standalone H.264 encoder and says optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. The listing does not establish current price or whether the optional feature is included in a particular configuration. |
| Amazon Lightsail | Technical operators who want a bundled VM and will configure the encoder themselves | A general-purpose Linux/Unix VM option with a published plan price; it is a host, not a complete prerecorded streaming service. |
| DigitalOcean SRS Marketplace app | Technical operators who want a streaming stack to configure and validate | Its catalog entry describes an open-source stack with FFmpeg transcoding, virtual live streaming, and support for several streaming protocols; it does not establish turnkey YouTube scheduling for prerecorded media. |
| Vultr Cloud Compute | Operators who want to follow Vultr’s documented OBS-on-Ubuntu approach | Vultr’s guide gives a starting server specification and explains installing OBS Studio and FFmpeg. That is vendor guidance, not a resource guarantee or an independent benchmark. |
For an alternative requiring less server administration, YouTube’s encoder directory lists both Gyre and AJA HELO Plus for relevant workflows. The descriptions are not a like-for-like performance or cost comparison: confirm current product details before choosing either.
What Vultr’s documented setup requires
Vultr’s OBS-on-Ubuntu guide, updated April 1, 2025, gives an initial deployment specification of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB memory, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. It instructs operators to install OBS Studio and FFmpeg, configure YouTube as the destination, and watch CPU use. Vultr warns that high CPU use can lead to dropped frames and buffering; it advises lowering output resolution or increasing vCPU allocation if the instance struggles. These are Vultr’s starting recommendations, not proof that the same VM will handle every source format, resolution, or scene. See the Vultr OBS and Ubuntu guide.

Dedicated encoder hardware
YouTube’s directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 streaming encoder. It says optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a hardware-based alternative for someone who values a dedicated appliance, but the directory does not establish current pricing, retailer availability, or whether the optional functionality comes with a given configuration. Compare purchase cost and maintenance against recurring cloud or VM expenses.
Amazon Lightsail: a VM, not a managed channel
AWS’s Lightsail pricing page lists a Linux/Unix general-purpose plan at $24 USD per month with 4 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 80 GB SSD, and 4 TB transfer, as accessed in 2026. AWS notes that transfer beyond the allowance can be billable and terms vary by region. This is the price of the listed VM plan, not a complete streaming-service cost: you still configure media playback, an encoder, YouTube delivery, monitoring, and reconnect behavior. Check AWS Lightsail pricing for applicable regional terms.

AWS also documents a larger 24×7 video architecture using MediaLive for encoding, MediaStore or MediaPackage for storage or packaging, and CloudFront for delivery. The documentation does not provide a channel-specific bill or establish that this architecture is economical for one YouTube ingest stream. See AWS CloudFront video workflow documentation.
DigitalOcean SRS Marketplace app
DigitalOcean’s SRS catalog entry describes an open-source streaming stack that includes FFmpeg transcoding and virtual live streaming, with RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, HLS, and other protocol support. The catalog page says its content was generated March 13, 2024 and includes older package versions; verify the current app and software versions before deploying. The documentation does not establish that it provides turnkey scheduling for prerecorded YouTube streams. See DigitalOcean SRS documentation.
Compare total operating burden, not headline server price
- Administration: Managed services reduce server and encoder work; a VM or streaming stack leaves setup, updates, monitoring, and recovery to the operator.
- Looping and scheduling: Confirm whether the option can repeat one file, schedule multiple files, or build playlists in the way your channel needs. The cited SRS documentation does not establish turnkey YouTube scheduling.
- Encoding resources: CPU or GPU needs depend on whether the source is simply passed through or re-encoded, as well as resolution, frame rate, codec, and other output settings. Do not treat Vultr’s starting specification as a universal sizing rule.
- Transfer: A continuous outgoing stream consumes data. Compare included transfer and overage charges, not only compute price. Lightsail’s stated transfer allowance and overage terms are subject to its regional pricing details.
- Monitoring and recovery: Check what happens after an encoder or YouTube connection drops, and who is responsible for restarting it. The cited listings do not provide comparable uptime measurements.
- Full cost: Include VM or service fees, storage, data transfer, overages, any hardware purchase, and the time needed to maintain the setup. The available figures do not support a complete like-for-like channel cost estimate.
Set up a self-managed encoder for YouTube
Whether you use a Vultr VM, Lightsail, or another host, the core flow is similar. The exact installation steps and available controls vary by operating system, encoder, and image; consult the chosen host’s current documentation rather than assuming one command sequence fits every server.
- Provision and prepare the host. Select a VM with enough CPU, memory, storage, and transfer for your source and output. For Vultr, its published OBS-on-Ubuntu starting point is 2 vCPUs, 4 GB memory, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. Install and update the operating system, then install OBS Studio and FFmpeg if following Vultr’s documented approach.
- Prepare the media loop. Upload the source file or files. In OBS, add a Media Source and enable Loop to repeat a file, as described in Vultr’s Broadcaster guide. If you need a multi-file playlist or schedule, verify that your chosen software supports it; a single looping media source is not automatically a scheduling system.
- Set YouTube as the destination. In YouTube Studio, open the current live-stream setup flow, create or select the stream, and copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s setup guidance specifies those connection details. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with someone who should not control the broadcast. You can manage stream setup using YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose output settings your uplink can sustain. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the source and the host’s available upload capacity. If you re-encode, the VM must perform that encoding work; if the encoder is struggling, reducing output resolution or increasing CPU allocation are the adjustments Vultr identifies. YouTube’s guidance is to choose reliable quality for the available connection, test with representative audio and movement, and monitor stream health. YouTube transcodes a live input into output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a stable encoder-to-YouTube uplink. See YouTube encoder settings guidance.
- Test before relying on a long-running broadcast. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test, verify both picture and sound, let the media reach its loop point, and check that the encoder reconnects as expected after a brief interruption. Watch YouTube’s stream health and the VM’s CPU use during representative movement and audio. YouTube’s advice is: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Plan for archives and rights. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; treat that as an archive-planning threshold, not proof that a longer stream cannot work. Confirm that you have rights to the music, video, images, and other material you broadcast, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies. A looping stream does not make copyrighted or otherwise ineligible content safe to use.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames, buffering, or an unstable broadcast | High CPU use, insufficient host resources, or an uplink that cannot sustain the selected bitrate | Check encoder statistics and VM CPU. Lower output resolution or add vCPU capacity if the instance is CPU-bound; choose settings that the host’s upload connection can reliably sustain. |
| Broadcast will not connect to YouTube | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or the stream is not configured correctly in YouTube Studio | Re-enter the current YouTube Live server URL and stream key from Studio. Keep the key private and confirm the selected stream setup is the one you intend to use. |
| Video stops at the end of the file | The media source is not configured to loop | In OBS, check the Media Source’s Loop setting. For playlists or schedules, verify the selected software actually supports them; looping one file is not the same as scheduling several. |
| Stream runs but picture or sound is wrong | Source-file, audio, or output-setting mismatch | Test the actual source with representative movement and sound. Monitor the stream health and encoder output rather than assuming a successful connection means correct playback. |
| The server price seems low, but the bill is higher | Transfer overage, storage, or other architecture costs | Review the host’s region-specific transfer allowance and overage terms, plus storage and any additional services. A VM sticker price alone is not the total cost of continuous streaming. |
| The broadcast fails after an interruption | The encoder or chosen stack may not resume automatically | Test the behavior before depending on the channel. Confirm whether restart and monitoring are your responsibility or included in the managed service you choose. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VM, StreamNeo’s three-step workflow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer can be off. Uploaded video streams at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
