Choose VS Code if you want editing, language-aware assistance, Git controls, a terminal, debugging and testing gathered in one documented workbench. Try Sublime Text if multiple-cursor editing, tab multi-select and package-based customization match how you work. Neither is universally better, and the available documentation does not establish that one is faster.
How do VS Code and Sublime Text differ?
The main distinction is how much of a development workflow each editor brings into view. VS Code documents an integrated workbench for editing, language support, running, debugging, testing, terminal use and source control. Sublime Text’s official materials highlight focused editing capabilities, packages, platform support and a command-line interface.

That is a difference in documented workflows, not a verdict on speed or quality. Language-specific features in VS Code depend on built-in support and extensions; either editor’s practical fit also depends on your project and setup.

VS Code: more workflow tools in one interface
VS Code’s documentation covers language-aware editing, running and debugging code, testing, an integrated terminal, and source control. Many users add components for their particular workflows, so the editor’s available features for a language or toolchain depend on what is built in and what you install. VS Code’s getting-started documentation describes this workbench approach.
#1 Best Overall
This setup suits people who want to move between code, terminal commands and development tools without choosing a separate editor for each task. It does not mean every language or workflow is ready without configuration.
Sublime Text: editing features and customization
Sublime Text’s official materials put particular emphasis on multiple selections, selecting tabs together, packages, GPU rendering and a command-line tool. Its product page also lists Git integration, but the documentation reviewed does not establish feature-by-feature parity with VS Code’s Git interface. GPU rendering is a documented feature, not evidence that Sublime Text is faster in a real-world comparison.
How do Git and extensions compare?
Git: VS Code has a documented graphical workflow
VS Code documents interface-based workflows for staging and committing changes, branching, worktrees and resolving merge conflicts. You must install Git separately: VS Code uses the machine’s Git installation for Git operations. Installing GitHub Desktop alone does not meet that prerequisite. See the VS Code source control documentation.

Sublime Text lists Git integration, but the official materials cited here do not provide enough detail to claim that its Git workflow matches VS Code’s in scope or interface. If particular Git tasks matter to you, check that they are supported in your preferred setup before committing to an editor.

Extensions and packages are different customization models
VS Code uses extensions distributed through the Visual Studio Marketplace. Extensions can add language support, debuggers and other tools; the Marketplace describes its collection as containing thousands of extensions, but that is not a dated count.
Sublime Text uses packages, which can include plugins, syntax definitions, menus and snippets. Its package documentation explains package contents and locations. Package quality and maintenance vary, so check the details of a package you plan to rely on rather than assuming they are uniform.
What editing features stand out in Sublime Text?
Sublime Text’s multiple-selection editing lets you work on several locations at once. Its documented workflows include adding occurrences to a selection and splitting a selection into lines, which can make repetitive edits across similar text more direct. It also supports selecting multiple tabs together. See the multiple selections documentation and tab multi-select documentation.
Sublime Text also provides a command-line interface. That can suit users who want to open files or projects from a terminal; consult the command-line documentation for supported commands and platform-specific details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which operating systems and architectures are supported?
Sublime Text’s official platform documentation lists Windows, Mac and Linux, including Apple Silicon on Mac and ARM64 on Linux. It says Windows ARM is not currently supported. Verify the current compatibility details for your exact operating system and processor before installing, because platform support can change.
The materials cited here do not provide a matching architecture-by-architecture VS Code comparison, so this is not a complete cross-editor compatibility table. Check each editor’s current requirements for your device.
Does Sublime Text cost money, and does VS Code require an account?
VS Code says an account is not needed for its core features. Sublime Text can be downloaded and evaluated without purchase, but its official download page says a license must be purchased for continued use. Terms can change; check the current download and licensing information before deciding. No price comparison is included here because current amounts and terms are not established.

Which editor should you choose?
- Choose VS Code if you want a documented integrated workbench, a built-in Git interface and an extension ecosystem for adding language and tool support. Plan to install Git and any workflow-specific components you need.
- Try Sublime Text if its multiple-selection editing, tab multi-select, command-line integration and package-based customization appeal to you. Account for the license requirement if you continue using it after evaluation.
- Test the workflow that matters. Open a representative project and check the language support, Git tasks and editing features you actually use. Documentation establishes feature availability, not which editor will feel faster or suit your work best.
