Disabling extensions (or launching with --disable-extensions) is the cleaner short-term test for whether extension code is involved in a slowdown. A VS Code Profile is the better long-term way to keep separate projects or technology stacks lean, because each profile can carry only the extensions and settings that workload needs. An Empty Profile is useful as a broad baseline, but it also disables modified settings, so it cannot isolate extensions by itself.
Measure the same operation in the same workspace before and after each change. Microsoft’s documentation explains that extensions can affect startup and UI operations, while lazy activation prevents extensions from consuming CPU and memory before they are needed. The official material does not publish a speed percentage or a benchmark proving that Profiles outperform disabling extensions.

Quick answer: choose the tool that matches the question
| What you need to do | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Check quickly whether extensions are involved in a slowdown | Disable extensions or launch with --disable-extensions |
It changes extension activity directly while leaving more of your normal configuration in place. |
| Get a broad “clean VS Code” comparison | Empty Profile | It disables all extensions and modified settings, helping distinguish extension, setting, and VS Code core problems. |
| Work repeatedly on different stacks | A dedicated Profile for each stack | Profiles save extensions, settings and other customizations, so you do not repeatedly switch them by hand. |
| Find one culprit among many extensions | Extension Bisect, followed by individual disable tests | Bisect narrows the candidate set in logarithmic time rather than asking you to test every extension in sequence. |
A Profile does not make VS Code faster merely by existing. A profile containing the same extensions and settings as your current setup should not be expected to produce a guaranteed speed increase. The possible gain comes from using a profile that does not load unnecessary work for the project you are opening.
What a VS Code Profile actually changes
A Profile is a saved configuration set. It can include installed or enabled extensions, settings, snippets, tasks, keyboard shortcuts and other customizations. You can switch profiles and associate a profile with a workspace, allowing a project to open with the configuration intended for it.

Why Profiles can help in recurring workflows
Suppose one workspace is a web project and another is a data-science project. Each may need a different language server, formatter, debugger and set of UI preferences. Keeping every extension active in one global configuration means every workspace has to coexist with all of that extension code, even when most of it is irrelevant to the current task.
A lean profile limits the configuration to the extensions and settings needed by one workload. This can reduce the amount of extension activation and background activity that occurs while you work, but the result depends on the exact extensions, settings, project size and machine. It is a configuration strategy, not a performance guarantee.
Profile scope and workspace association
Profiles are useful when the same separation is needed again and again. After creating a profile for a stack, you can switch to it for another project instead of remembering which extensions to disable and which settings to restore. Associating the profile with a workspace makes that choice repeatable for that project.
Profiles also preserve non-extension choices. If a slowdown is caused by a modified setting rather than an extension, changing profiles may remove the setting and change the result. That is useful operationally, but it means a Profile comparison is not an extension-only experiment.
Remote-development limitation
Profile behavior is not identical in every window. The Profiles documentation notes that extensions are not synchronized to or from remote windows such as SSH, development containers or WSL. Treat a remote window as its own test environment and verify which extensions are installed and active there instead of assuming the local profile state was copied across.
What disabling extensions does
Disabling is a direct control over extension activity in the current VS Code installation. You can disable one extension globally, disable it only for the current workspace, or use the command to disable all installed extensions. The Extensions view can prompt for an extension-host restart after a change; allow that restart before judging performance.

Global versus workspace-only disable
- Disable globally: prevents the extension from activating in other workspaces as well until you enable it again.
- Disable for the current workspace: keeps the extension available elsewhere while removing it from this project’s extension activity.
- Disable all installed extensions: gives you a fast, broad test without rebuilding your settings or creating a saved profile.
Disabling preserves more of your existing configuration than an Empty Profile. That makes it a better first experiment when you want to answer the narrow question, “Are extensions involved?” It still does not identify which extension is responsible; use Extension Bisect or individual tests for that.
Command-line baseline
To start a VS Code instance without activating installed extensions, launch it with:
code --disable-extensions
The command is a launch control. It does not permanently uninstall or alter the extension list. Open the same folder and perform the same operation you used in the normal session, then compare the result.
Empty Profile: a useful baseline with an important caveat
VS Code’s Empty Profile disables all extensions and modified settings so you can quickly check whether an issue is related to an extension, a setting or VS Code core. It is intentionally broader than “disable all extensions.”
What the Empty Profile tells you
If a problem disappears in an Empty Profile, the cause is somewhere in the extensions or modified settings that were removed. If it remains, the issue is less likely to be caused by those customizations and more likely to involve the project, VS Code core, the operating environment or another factor outside the profile.
What it does not prove
An Empty Profile result cannot prove that an extension caused the slowdown, because modified settings changed at the same time. For example, an extension might be harmless while a setting controlling file watching, indexing, language features or UI behavior is responsible. Follow an Empty Profile test with an extension-only test or a setting comparison before assigning blame.

How to use it
- Reproduce the slowdown in the normal profile and record the operation, workspace and approximate time or symptom.
- Open the Profiles interface and choose the Empty Profile option.
- Open the same workspace and repeat the same operation without changing unrelated variables.
- If the issue changes, return to the normal profile and disable extensions separately, or compare modified settings, to narrow the cause.
The Empty Profile is therefore a diagnostic baseline, not automatically the best permanent working profile.
How extensions affect perceived performance
Extensions run in VS Code’s extension host. Official extension-host documentation identifies startup performance and UI operations as areas extensions can affect. An extension may perform work while activating, respond to file or editor events, index a project, provide diagnostics, or add commands and UI elements. The impact depends on what the extension does and when its code runs.
Lazy activation changes the timing
VS Code lets extensions declare Activation Events and loads them lazily. Lazy activation avoids spending CPU and memory on an extension before its functionality is needed. Consequently, the number of installed extensions alone is not a reliable performance measurement. Two installations with the same extension count can behave differently because their activation rules, settings, workspace contents and versions differ.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Symptoms that justify an extension test
- Startup is noticeably slower after installing or updating an extension.
- The editor becomes sluggish when opening a particular language, folder or file type.
- Typing, completion, diagnostics, navigation or save operations lag while a project is indexed.
- The extension host consumes sustained CPU or memory during a repeatable operation.
- The issue appears only in one workspace that has workspace-specific extensions or settings.
These symptoms are reasons to run a controlled comparison, not proof that an extension is at fault. A large project, remote connection, file-system watcher, language server or setting can produce similar behavior.
A controlled comparison you can reproduce
Performance comparisons are useful only when the workload is held steady. Use the following sequence instead of switching settings casually and relying on memory.
- Define the workload. Choose one operation that is slow, such as opening the project, starting a language service, running completion, saving a file or switching between large files. Note the workspace, operating system, VS Code version and whether the window is local or remote.
- Establish a normal baseline. Restart VS Code, open the same folder, wait for background activity to settle, and repeat the operation several times. Record observable results such as startup time, delay before diagnostics appear or whether typing stutters. Do not change extensions or settings during this baseline.
- Run an extension-disabled test. Close the test window and launch
code --disable-extensions, then open the same folder and repeat the exact operation. Allow any normal startup work to finish before comparing. - Run an Empty Profile test if needed. Use an Empty Profile to remove both extensions and modified settings. If the outcome differs from the extension-disabled run, modified settings are a meaningful suspect.
- Interpret the result. If the slowdown remains in both clean tests, extensions are less likely to be the primary cause. If it disappears only when extensions are disabled, investigate extensions. If it disappears only in the Empty Profile, inspect modified settings as well.
- Bisect or isolate. Use Extension Bisect for a large extension set, or disable likely extensions one at a time when only a few candidates exist.
- Build the lasting configuration. For a recurring project or stack, create a Profile containing the extensions and settings that survived the test. Keep the normal profile available for other work.
Use the same machine and workspace for every run. A result that is faster on one computer, project or remote connection is evidence about that setup, not a universal speed claim.

Finding the culprit with Extension Bisect
Extension Bisect is designed for intermittent or hard-to-isolate extension problems. It disables a subset of extensions, asks you whether the problem remains, and uses the answer to choose the next subset. The process resembles git bisect: each answer eliminates roughly half of the remaining candidates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy bisect is better than guessing
If you have N candidate extensions, testing them one by one can require many restarts and repeated reproductions. Bisect narrows the candidate set in O(log N) steps. That is an algorithmic statement about the search procedure, not a claim that VS Code becomes faster by a particular percentage.
When to use it
- Use it after a clean test shows that extensions are involved.
- Use it when the extension set is large or the problem appears only occasionally.
- Use individual disable tests instead when you have one or two obvious candidates and the reproduction is quick.
Once a candidate is identified, re-enable the other extensions and verify the result with the same workload. Check the candidate’s settings and activation conditions before deciding whether to leave it disabled, limit it to selected workspaces or seek an update from its publisher.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Creating a lean Profile for permanent use
- Open the Profiles interface from VS Code’s profile controls or the Command Palette.
- Choose the command to create a new profile and give it a name that describes the workload, such as a language or project type.
- Include only the extensions needed for that workload. Add settings, snippets, tasks and keyboard shortcuts that are specific to it.
- Open the target workspace with the new profile and confirm that required language, build and debugging features work.
- Associate the profile with the workspace if you want VS Code to select it automatically for that project.
- Repeat the controlled workload comparison. Keep the profile if it improves the actual symptom without removing necessary functionality.
A lean profile should be maintained like any other configuration: remove extensions that are no longer used, review newly added settings and recheck performance after major extension or project changes. Profiles make that maintenance repeatable; they do not eliminate the need to test.
Profiles and disabling extensions compared by decision axis
| Decision axis | Profiles | Disabling extensions |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Maintain separate configurations for projects or workflows. | Temporarily test or remove extension activity from the current configuration. |
| What can change | Extensions, settings, snippets, tasks, keyboard shortcuts and other saved customizations. | One extension, all extensions, or extension state for a workspace or globally. |
| Diagnostic value | Empty Profile tests extensions and modified settings together. | Tests whether extensions are involved while retaining more of the user’s configuration. |
| Long-term fit | Strong fit for recurring changes between technology stacks. | Useful for temporary control; repeated manual toggling becomes cumbersome across many workflows. |
| Best next step after a slowdown | Create a dedicated lean profile after isolating the cause. | Use disable controls or Extension Bisect to narrow the cause. |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming a Profile automatically improves speed
A Profile is only as lean as its contents. If it contains the same extensions, settings and workspace workload as the original configuration, there is no documented reason to expect an inherent speed advantage. Remove unnecessary work and measure again.

Treating Empty Profile as an extension-only switch
Empty Profile also disables modified settings. Use the command-line extension-disabled run or the Extensions view when you need to preserve settings during the test.
Best Value
Comparing different workspaces
Opening a small folder in one configuration and a large monorepo in another invalidates the comparison. Keep the folder, files, operation and wait time consistent.
Judging before the extension host restarts
After disabling an extension, VS Code may request an extension-host restart. Complete that restart before repeating the workload, or the old extension state may still influence the result.
Counting extensions instead of observing activation
Lazy activation means an installed extension may not run until its feature is requested. Count and activation timing are different measurements. Focus on the operation that triggers the slowdown.

Assuming local and remote windows behave identically
Remote windows have separate extension and synchronization behavior. Verify the active extension set in the SSH, development-container or WSL window and run the test there.
A practical decision tree
- You need a five-minute answer: reproduce the issue, run
code --disable-extensions, and repeat the operation. - The clean run fixes the issue: use Extension Bisect or individual disable tests, then decide whether the responsible extension belongs in a workspace-only configuration.
- The clean run does not fix the issue: test an Empty Profile to include modified settings, then investigate the project, remote environment, VS Code core or other system factors if the symptom persists.
- You switch stacks every day: create saved Profiles so each workspace has an intentional extension and settings set.
- You need a broad sanity check rather than a permanent setup: use Empty Profile temporarily, not as proof of an extension-only cause.
What the evidence does—and does not—support
Microsoft documents the mechanisms and workflows: extensions can affect startup and UI operations; lazy activation limits unnecessary work; Empty Profile disables extensions and modified settings; extensions can be disabled globally or for a workspace; and Profiles can separate technology stacks. Those facts support a testing and configuration strategy.
They do not establish a universal winner, a fixed percentage improvement or a rule that every project should use Profiles. Hardware, project size, extension behavior, settings, VS Code version and local versus remote execution all influence the result. The only defensible performance claim is the one demonstrated by a controlled comparison on the reader’s own workload.
Bottom line
Use disabling extensions for diagnosis and immediate control. Use an Empty Profile when you want to test extensions and modified settings together. After identifying the cause, use Extension Bisect or individual tests to isolate the extension. For recurring project or technology-stack changes, create a lean saved Profile containing only the required extensions and settings. Profiles are more convenient for sustained organization; disabling extensions is more direct for a performance experiment. Neither is inherently faster without evidence from the specific machine and workspace.
