In a VS Code monorepo, choose an exclusion setting based on what you want to change: use files.exclude to hide folders in Explorer, search.exclude to keep them out of text-search results, or files.watcherExclude to stop watching selected paths. These settings affect different features; none is a universal “ignore this folder everywhere” switch.
Choose the setting for the behavior you want

Microsoft’s settings documentation describes the available settings and their scope. Its Visual Studio Code FAQ notes that opening a folder with many files can make search take substantial time and CPU resources while VS Code may respond slowly; it recommends files.exclude in that context. That is not a promise of a particular speed improvement for every monorepo.

Put project-specific rules in workspace settings
For rules that should apply to a repository, put them in the workspace’s .vscode/settings.json. This keeps project-specific configuration with the project instead of applying it to every folder you open. See Microsoft’s user and workspace settings guide.

Example: exclude generated and dependency folders
Adapt the folder names and settings to the effect you want. This example hides common generated and dependency folders, filters them from text search, and excludes their contents from file watching:

}You do not need to set all three. For example, if developers should still browse a generated folder but not find its files in routine text searches, use search.exclude without files.exclude. If the problem is file-watching pressure, use files.watcherExclude; it does not hide the folder from Explorer or act as a search filter.

Make glob patterns match the intended paths
Settings patterns use glob syntax. A slash separates path segments, * matches within one segment, ? matches one character, and ** can match across any number of path segments. In files.exclude and search.exclude, a pattern such as **/dist matches a folder named dist at any depth beneath a workspace folder. Settings patterns are relative to each workspace folder. Microsoft’s Glob Patterns Reference documents this syntax.
Use forward slashes in patterns on every platform, including Windows. Glob matching is case-insensitive by default on Windows and macOS, and case-sensitive on Linux. For remote workspaces, matching follows the remote file system’s case sensitivity.

Search view include and exclude boxes have different behavior from settings patterns: their ** prefix is assumed. Do not copy a pattern between those boxes and settings without accounting for that difference. The Search and replace documentation covers search controls.
Check the trade-offs before excluding a folder
- Exclude dependency trees and generated output when they create noisy results or unnecessary work for the affected feature.
- Keep source directories available when developers need to navigate, search, or index their contents. Some exclusions can remove useful material from search, grep, or semantic indexing; Microsoft discusses workspace context and exclusions in its workspace context documentation.
- Test a pattern against both the workspace root and nested packages. In a multi-root workspace, verify the result in each relevant root.
- Do not assume that excluding a folder guarantees a specific performance gain. Microsoft documents possible costs and remedies for particular symptoms, but does not establish a universal benchmark for a given monorepo.
Troubleshoot unexpected search or watcher behavior
Excluded files still appear in search
In the Search view, check that Use Exclude Settings and Ignore Files is enabled. This toggle determines whether search honors matching .gitignore, files.exclude, and search.exclude rules. Then verify the pattern’s workspace-root scope and glob syntax.

Linux reports an ENOSPC watcher error
Microsoft’s Linux installation guidance discusses the ENOSPC notification, operating-system watch limits, and files.watcherExclude as one possible remedy. Which remedy fits depends on the machine and distribution; there is no single watch-limit value that applies to every Linux setup.
A folder disappears when it should remain visible
Check whether the rule is in files.exclude. If the goal is only to omit files from text-search results, move the rule to search.exclude so the folder remains available in Explorer.

Search or IntelliSense loses useful files
Narrow the pattern or remove the exclusion for source that developers need. Microsoft’s IntelliSense documentation describes IntelliSense behavior; excluding broad paths can make relevant material unavailable to features that use workspace files.
