VS Code works as a writing app when your project is a folder of related text files, such as chapters, notes, outlines, or documentation pages. Its folder-wide search, side-by-side editor groups, distraction-free view, Markdown preview, and Git history cover many jobs writers usually hand to a word processor. Whether it fits you depends less on the editor than on the file format and the output your work must end in.
Why a code editor suits multi-file writing
Most word processors are built around one document at a time. A novel, a documentation set, or a research project usually spans many files, and moving between them is where time gets lost. VS Code is built around folders. Open one, and every file in it becomes reachable from the sidebar, searchable from one place, and editable in the same window.
The XDA Developers article by Nolen, published 16 September 2026, describes the author adopting the editor after first using it to clean up HTML, and then staying with it for prose. That origin story matters less than the underlying feature set, which Microsoft documents for the current editor. The features below are the ones that carry over to writing.
Setting up a writing folder
- Create one folder for the project, for example my-book, and place each chapter, notes file, and outline inside it as a separate text or Markdown file.
- In VS Code, choose File > Open Folder and select that project folder. The Explorer sidebar now lists every file in it.
- Open the chapter you are drafting, then open the outline or a reference file in a second editor group (see below).
- If you plan to track revisions, install Git separately and initialise the repository before your first serious draft session. VS Code does not bundle Git.
Search and version history apply to the open folder only. If your files are scattered across several folders, open a parent folder that contains them all, or accept that you will need one VS Code window per project.

Focus and layout
Zen Mode
Zen Mode hides the interface apart from the editor, switches to full screen, and centres the text. This gives a quieter drafting view without changing the file. The default shortcut on Windows and Linux is Ctrl+K, then Z. Press Escape twice to exit. The same mode is available from the View menu. Shortcuts can be changed, so if you are writing instructions for other people, confirm the current binding in the Keyboard Shortcuts editor before relying on it.
Editor groups for side-by-side work
Editor groups let you open several documents at once and arrange them in columns or rows. You can drag a tab to the edge of the window or use the Split commands. Common pairings include a chapter beside its outline, a draft beside a reference file, or Markdown source beside its rendered preview. Microsoft’s documentation covers these layouts; the exact keyboard shortcut for splitting differs by platform, which is covered in the shortcut note below.

Searching and replacing across a manuscript
The Search view looks through every file in the open folder, groups matches by file, and lets you step through each hit. Replace works across files too. VS Code shows pending replacements as a diff before they are applied, and you can replace all matches, all matches in one file, or a single match.
That last option is the one that matters for prose. A character’s name may also appear in a quotation, a note, or a passage about someone else with the same name. Review each match before running a project-wide replacement, and use the single-file or single-match options when a term has more than one meaning. A replacement that touches a quoted line is easy to miss once it is saved.

Markdown preview and what it cannot do
VS Code includes a Markdown preview and can show source and rendered output side by side. That makes it a practical environment for README files, documentation, web articles, and any text that begins and ends as Markdown.
The limit is layout. Markdown is not designed for complex page composition, and it does not replace the full review workflow of a word processor. If your final deliverable is a styled DOCX with tracked changes, margin comments, or a publisher’s template, test that handoff before you commit to a Markdown-first process. The WindowsForum commentary on the XDA article makes the same point; it is secondary reporting, not documentation of how VS Code behaves.

Version history with Git
The Source Control view lets you review changed files, stage selected files or individual changes, and commit them. Each commit is a checkpoint in the project’s history, and you can return to earlier states.
- Git must be installed separately. Without it, the Source Control view has nothing to work with.
- A commit records only what you have staged. Unstaged edits are not part of that checkpoint.
- History exists only for commits you actually make. If you write for three days and never commit, there is nothing to roll back to.
- A local repository is not a backup. If the disk fails or the folder is deleted, the history goes with it. Pair it with an independent backup or a remote copy of the repository.
The XDA article describes the editor’s history as an infinitely detailed undo. That is a rhetorical flourish. Git history is a sequence of commits you choose to make, which is useful, but it is not a record of every keystroke.

Correcting a shortcut in the original article
The XDA article’s search result says Ctrl+, opens a second editor pane. The WindowsForum commentary published the same day says this is wrong: Ctrl+, opens Settings, and the Windows default for splitting the editor is Ctrl+. Use the menu or Split command to avoid depending on any single shortcut, and check the Keyboard Shortcuts editor if your keys differ.
Where VS Code fits and where it does not
The table compares the needs most writers raise. Entries for conventional word processors are deliberately general, because the features vary by product and were not assessed here.
| Need | VS Code | Conventional word processor |
|---|---|---|
| Navigating many related files | Strong: open a folder and work across files in one window | Weaker by default: one document per window, varies by product |
| Search and replace across files | Documented: folder-wide search with a diff preview before replacing | Varies by product; not stated in the reviewed sources |
| Distraction-free drafting | Zen Mode, with full screen and centred text | Varies by product; not stated in the reviewed sources |
| Plain-text and Markdown output | Strong: Markdown preview and source-plus-preview layouts | Not its primary strength |
| Styled layout, page templates, print-ready DOCX | Weak: Markdown is not built for complex page layout | Strong for most word processors |
| Tracked changes and comments for editors | Not a documented feature of VS Code; Git tracks commits, not reviewer markup | Typically available; varies by product |
| Checkpoints and history | Via Git, which must be installed separately | Varies by product; not stated in the reviewed sources |
VS Code is a good fit for a long text project, a set of connected notes, or documentation that lives in a repository. It is a poor fit for a one-page letter, a heavily formatted manuscript that must be delivered as DOCX, or any work where a non-technical collaborator expects to make tracked edits. In those cases a conventional word processor will save more time than the setup costs.
The XDA article’s central claim, that the editor is the best writing app its author has used, is a personal judgement. The features described above are documented; whether they outweigh the trade-offs is a decision each writer has to make against the output they actually need.
