To play clips in VRChat, first choose between routing a soundboard through your PC’s audio devices and attaching triggered sounds to an avatar. The PC route avoids avatar editing but depends on correct device routing; avatar sounds are spatial effects configured by a creator and subject to VRChat’s audio limits and listener controls.
Which kind of VRChat soundboard do you need?
“Soundboard” can mean playing clips through a computer audio path or triggering sounds attached to an avatar. They solve different problems: PC routing is for playing clips without changing an avatar, while avatar audio makes sounds part of the avatar experience.

| Approach | Best suited to | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| PC soundboard routed through an audio device or microphone path | Playing clips without modifying an avatar | Device routing, VRChat input and output settings, headset or SteamVR audio mirroring, and application-specific setup. VRChat’s troubleshooting guidance covers audio routing, but does not provide verified setup steps for a particular soundboard app. |
| Avatar-attached audio | Triggered, spatial effects that belong to an avatar | Creator-side Unity and SDK configuration; distance and gain limits; compression; and listeners’ Safety settings. |
Neither route requires a particular physical soundboard according to VRChat’s published audio and creator guidance. A community discussion mentions software examples, but that anecdote does not establish that they are necessary, recommended, or currently compatible.

If clips are not audible, check the signal path from the soundboard application to VRChat and the headset. VRChat’s support guidance recommends checking the app’s selected output device and volume controls, system audio, and Windows Volume Mixer; the precise soundboard configuration depends on the application.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Confirm the soundboard’s destination. Check which audio device the soundboard application is sending sound to, and verify that the intended device is available.
- Check VRChat’s audio controls and device selection. In VRChat, open the Sound tab, check the volume sliders, and confirm the selected output device. Also verify whether VRChat is using the intended default device in the Windows Volume Mixer.
- Check that system audio reaches the headset. Play another sound outside VRChat. If it also fails, investigate the PC’s output device and headset connection before changing VRChat settings.
- Check the VR audio route. If you use SteamVR, review its audio mirroring settings. If you stream PC VR wirelessly, check the streaming software’s audio route as well.
- Investigate software or driver conflicts. Device drivers, audio production software, or other audio drivers can interfere with VRChat’s access to a device. If the device appears unavailable, temporarily test without potentially conflicting software and check for driver updates.
VRChat’s support advice also covers users on Quest, Pico, and Vive XR Elite: check VRChat volume controls, system sound, and whether headphones are charged and connected. These checks identify common routing failures; they do not guarantee a particular third-party soundboard setup.
How to add sounds to an avatar
Avatar-attached sound effects use Unity and the VRChat SDK rather than the PC soundboard path. VRChat distinguishes microphone voice from avatar audio, and avatar sounds are spatialized and constrained at runtime.

- Powerful downloadable software -- control panel software gives powerful Audio Enhancements and unprecedented control; Also includes optimized profiles for multiple earphone brands
- No drivers needed -- works straight out of the box
- Configure the avatar’s Audio Source. Add a
VRC_SpatialAudioSourcecomponent to the Audio Source. If it is missing, the SDK may add one with default settings. - Set distance and gain within the documented limits. VRChat’s Player Audio documentation, last updated April 4, 2025, lists a default far distance of 40 meters for avatar audio and a maximum gain of 10 dB. The same page lists a separate 25-meter default far distance for voice; that voice setting is not the avatar-audio limit.
- Keep the audio clear and controlled. VRChat’s VRC Spatial Audio Source documentation, last updated December 10, 2024, advises using relatively dry audio with fewer effects such as reverb and delay, leaving headroom, and avoiding sharp, high peaks to reduce compressor pumping. It suggests normalizing between -6 and -12 dB in Audacity or another wave editor; this is creator guidance, not a universal requirement for every clip.
- Use spatial settings deliberately. The creator documentation advises leaving volumetric radius at zero unless you understand its behavior. A custom falloff curve can also be affected by a world’s shorter distance limits.
VRChat applies a compressor to avatar audio to prevent maliciously loud output. Increasing a clip’s gain is therefore not a way to bypass the platform’s limits, and can make the sound less pleasant without making it reliably louder for listeners.
Why someone may hear voice but not avatar sounds
VRChat’s Safety system treats Voice (microphone audio) and Audio (avatar sound effects) as separate controls. Users can configure features by trust rank, hide an avatar, or mute an individual’s voice. As a result, a listener may allow one kind of sound while suppressing the other.

If an avatar effect is not audible to someone else, their Safety settings may be one reason; it does not necessarily mean the soundboard or avatar is misconfigured. The listener can review their own settings, but a creator cannot assume every user has avatar audio enabled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use sound effects without disrupting a world
VRChat’s Community Guidelines, updated September 24, 2025, say: “Don’t do things that will hurt or harm other people. Don’t act in ways that would upset people, cause them trouble, or disturb them.” The guidance is general, not a soundboard-specific prohibition. In practice, keep clips at reasonable levels, avoid disruptive repetition, consider the context of the instance, and use private or consenting spaces for sensitive material.
