What the choice depends on
Both a spare PC and a VPS can act as the encoder that sends a live feed to YouTube. The difference is where the work happens and what can interrupt it: a spare PC depends on your equipment, electricity and home internet; a VPS depends on the host, server configuration and the connection between the server and YouTube.
First decide whether your animation is generated live or is a prerecorded video. A prerecorded video can be looped by an encoder, but a service designed to play uploaded videos may not suit an animation that must be rendered live from software or a camera.

When a spare PC makes sense
A spare PC is a reasonable first choice if you already own one, it sustains the intended encode, and your home power and internet are reliable enough for a continuous broadcast. Its practical advantage is familiarity and avoiding a server migration; its drawback is that local outages or maintenance can interrupt the stream.

When a VPS makes sense
Consider a VPS when moving the encoder off your home network is important and the exact server configuration supports your software and workload. Do not assume that a generic VPS can run OBS or provide GPU or hardware encoding: check with the provider before committing, then verify through a representative test. An OBS community answer from 2019 raises the compatibility caution, but it is anecdotal rather than a current, comprehensive compatibility list.
Set YouTube’s ingest settings, then test the real workload
YouTube’s live-stream guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations accessed in 2026 include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommended outgoing bitrates, not minimum PC or VPS specifications. Choose a target your encoder can produce and your upload path can sustain.

YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 among supported video codecs and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its system transcodes incoming live video into viewer formats, but that does not compensate for an unstable feed from your encoder.
- Choose the source and target. Establish whether the animation is rendered live or is a prerecorded loop, then choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to it.
- Configure the encoder. Select a YouTube-supported video codec, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and choose a bitrate using YouTube’s guidance as a reference—not as a substitute for measuring your available upload capacity.
- Use a YouTube stream key securely. Copy the stream key from YouTube’s live-stream setup into the encoder’s stream configuration. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or expose it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Test the complete setup. YouTube advises testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and confirm that the encoder remains connected and that playback looks and sounds right.
- Check dropped frames and recovery. OBS explains that dropped frames can indicate network instability or insufficient connection capacity for the configured bitrate. If they appear, lower the bitrate or improve the network path, then test again. Also verify how the encoder behaves after a disconnection and how you will restart it.
Compare the full cost and recovery burden
Do not compare only a VPS rental with a spare PC’s purchase price. For a PC, include the electricity it uses, any maintenance and how you will handle local power or internet interruptions. For a VPS, check recurring rental charges, included traffic and any additional encoding resources, as well as the time needed to configure, update and recover the server. Current provider prices, transfer allowances, uptime statistics and comparative failure rates are not established here, so verify them directly rather than relying on a generic estimate.

Troubleshooting before you rely on a 24/7 stream
- The stream will not start: check that the correct stream key is configured, the encoder is using the intended YouTube ingest settings, and the encoder software is connected to the network.
- Dropped frames appear: investigate upload instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce the bitrate to a level the connection can support, then repeat the test and monitor stream health.
- The VPS cannot run the encoder as expected: confirm the operating system, software and graphics or hardware-encoding support for the exact server plan. If that support is unavailable, use a capable machine or a suitable alternative rather than assuming all VPS plans are equivalent.
- The broadcast stops after an interruption: test the reconnect behavior, and make a practical restart plan. On a PC, consider local power and internet; on a VPS, verify access to the provider console and logs.
- The picture or sound differs from the intended loop: test with representative motion and audio, then inspect the encoder output and YouTube stream health before leaving it unattended.
Keep the content eligible and safe to stream
Technical stability does not establish that a video is permitted to stream or eligible for monetization. Use content and audio you have the rights to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules for your channel. A looped format alone does not establish rights or monetization eligibility.
