How to Keep a 24/7 YouTube Stream Running When a VPS Reboots

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Linux VPS that uses systemd, run your encoder as an enabled system service and set a restart policy suited to how it exits. Enabling the service starts it at boot; the separate Restart= setting handles qualifying process exits. Neither guarantees YouTube has resumed a healthy broadcast, so test after a controlled reboot and verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room.

What reboot recovery does—and does not—solve

There are two separate jobs: start the encoder when the VPS boots, and restart it if the process later exits in a way covered by its policy. In systemd, enabling a unit arranges for it to start with the system’s normal boot target; the Restart= option governs process restarts. Its default is no. A process stopped as part of a systemd operation is not restarted by that policy. See the systemd service documentation and systemctl documentation for the behavior applicable to your installed version.

Supervision can relaunch an encoder, but cannot fix a wrong command, missing media, unavailable mount, invalid YouTube credentials, inadequate outbound capacity, or a YouTube-side problem. The exact unit depends on your distribution, systemd version, encoder command, source, network dependencies, and credential handling; do not copy a generic unit without adapting and testing it.

Choose a restart policy that matches the encoder

Setting When it restarts When it may fit
Restart=on-failure After unsuccessful exits and specified failures, as defined by systemd. When a clean encoder exit should remain stopped, but errors should trigger recovery.
Restart=always After clean as well as unsuccessful exits, subject to systemd’s documented exceptions. When the encoder is expected to run continuously and even a clean exit should start another process.

Consider what the encoder does when its input ends or the command completes. With always, a command that exits cleanly may be launched again; that may be right for a continuous loop, but wrong for a job meant to finish. Check your systemd version’s service documentation for restart limits and exceptions as well as the basic policy.

Prepare the YouTube connection and encoder command

Get the real stream URL and key

YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains that the stream key is password-like: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Use the URL and key shown for your stream in Live Control Room; do not invent an endpoint. Keep the key private—never put it in a public script, published example, or logs. If you reset a compromised key, update the service’s credential configuration too.

YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS encoder workflows and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection using TLS/SSL. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS and the FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation for protocol details. Confirm your actual command works manually with the intended input and YouTube endpoint before turning it into a service.

Match the output to YouTube’s current guidance

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers H.264, H.265, and AV1 options for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and recommended keyframe intervals. Recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current official table for your chosen output rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

Plan network capacity as well as encoder settings. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream; see Streaming tips. Check that the VPS has stable outbound connectivity and that any source file or mounted storage is available when the service starts.

Configure and test the systemd service

  1. Identify and test the command. Record the encoder command, input path, output settings, and required environment. Run it manually in a controlled session and confirm that YouTube receives the feed before adding systemd. Do not expose the stream key while documenting or sharing the command.
  2. Create a unit for your host. Put the tested command in a systemd service unit using paths and user permissions appropriate to your distribution. Configure its restart policy, and account for network readiness, source mounts, files, and credentials. The unit’s dependencies and environment are host-specific; there is no universally safe unit file for every VPS.
  3. Enable and start it. Use systemctl enable for the unit so it is attached to the machine’s normal boot target, then start it with systemctl start. Inspect the unit with systemctl status and review its journal logs with journalctl -u UNIT, substituting the actual unit name. Check logs before sharing them, since command lines or environment details can disclose credentials.
  4. Test a planned reboot. Schedule a maintenance window, reboot the VPS, and check that the unit starts and the encoder connects. Confirm that the feed is actually visible and healthy in Live Control Room and on the viewer page; a running process alone is not proof of a working broadcast.
  5. Check the event behavior you need. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not establish how every interrupted 24/7 broadcast will resume or appear to viewers after reboot. Test your particular scheduled/live workflow and watch-page behavior before relying on it.

Troubleshoot a stream that did not recover

  • The service is not active after reboot: inspect systemctl status UNIT and journalctl -u UNIT. Check that it is enabled, the unit and command paths are correct, and the configured user can read the input and access required files.
  • The service starts, then exits: read the service logs for the actual failure. Confirm the input exists when the unit starts, required mounts are available, and the command succeeds outside systemd with the same user, environment, and paths.
  • The process runs but YouTube receives no feed: verify the stream URL and key in Live Control Room and update the service configuration if the key was reset. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide explains how to retrieve the key and update the encoder.
  • The stream connects but is unstable: check VPS outbound capacity against the total stream bitrate, preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and investigate network interruptions. Recheck codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder settings.
  • The encoder exits cleanly and stays down—or loops unexpectedly: revisit whether on-failure or always matches the encoder’s exit behavior. A restart policy cannot distinguish a desirable completion from an undesirable one unless the service design and policy account for it.
  • The feed returns but viewers see a different event or page: do not assume a reboot resumes the identical viewer-facing event. The available YouTube guidance does not promise that behavior for every interrupted 24/7 stream; validate the event and watch-page workflow in a planned test.

If you would rather not maintain an encoder service on a VPS, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer at home can stay off; StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
