How much does a VPS cost per month in 2026? Plan on about $5–$10 for a small VPS and $10–$30 for a modest production server. Larger, managed, high-memory or dedicated-CPU configurations commonly reach $20–$60 or more, and specialized instances can exceed $2,000 monthly. The advertised price is only a starting point: RAM and CPU, transfer allowances, regional taxes, renewal rates and overage billing determine what you actually pay.

What is a VPS, and why do prices vary?
A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine running on a provider’s physical infrastructure. You receive an allocated amount of CPU, memory, storage and network transfer, plus administrative control similar to a standalone server. Several VPS customers may share a physical host, while a dedicated-CPU plan reserves physical cores or otherwise provides stronger performance isolation.

| Use case | Typical monthly budget | Common resources | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry-level | About $4–$10 | Roughly 1 vCPU and 512 MB–2 GB RAM | Development, a personal site, low-traffic WordPress or small services |
| Modest production | About $10–$30 | Approximately 2–4 vCPUs and 4–8 GB RAM | Business sites, APIs, databases and several light applications |
| Larger or managed | About $20–$60 or more | More CPU, memory, storage, backups or administration | Busy applications, heavier databases and teams that need support |
| High-end specialist | Hundreds to more than $2,000 | Large memory, dedicated CPU, GPUs or other specialized capacity | Compute-intensive workloads and enterprise deployments |
A realistic starting budget is therefore $5–$10 per month for a small server and $10–$30 for a modest production setup. The lower end can work, but you may need to handle operating-system updates, security, backups and monitoring yourself.

| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | $4 per month | 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer | Smallest listed Basic configuration; extra outbound transfer is billed separately |
| DigitalOcean General Purpose Droplet | $63 per month | 8 GB memory, 25 GB SSD and 4 TB transfer | Higher-performance class; the starting price applies to this stated configuration |
| Akamai (Linode) Shared CPU | From $5 per month | Shared-CPU instance family | Exact resources depend on the selected size and region |
| Akamai (Linode) Dedicated CPU | From $36 per month | Dedicated-CPU instance family | Costs several times more than entry shared CPU at comparable memory |
| Akamai (Linode) High Memory | From $60 per month | High-memory instance family | Designed for workloads where RAM is the limiting resource |
| Hetzner Cloud CX23 | €5.49 per month, excluding VAT | Cloud instance in Germany and Finland | Price after the 15 June 2026 adjustment; it was previously €3.99 |
| Hetzner Cloud CPX22 | €19.49 per month, excluding VAT | Cloud instance class | Price after 15 June 2026; it was previously €7.99 |
| Hetzner Cloud CCX13 | €42.99 per month, excluding VAT | Dedicated-vCPU instance | Price after 15 June 2026; it was previously €15.99 |
Hetzner said the June adjustment reflected higher infrastructure operating costs and hardware prices. Articles written before 15 June 2026 can therefore show obsolete Hetzner prices. European Hetzner figures above exclude VAT, so the amount charged depends on your location and tax status.
Akamai’s regional pages also demonstrate why location matters: one regional listing showed a 2 GB shared instance at $12 per month with 2 TB transfer, rather than the family’s $5 headline starting price. Always select the actual data-center region before comparing totals.

Cheapest VPS: what the lowest prices really include
$4 DigitalOcean entry plan
The $4 Basic Droplet is a genuine VPS starting point, but its 512 MiB of RAM and 1 vCPU leave little headroom for a database-heavy application, control panel or multiple services. It is better suited to a test server, static site, small personal project or a single lightweight process. The plan includes 500 GiB of transfer and 10 GiB of SSD storage; backups, larger disks and traffic beyond the allowance can raise the bill.
$5 Akamai shared CPU
Akamai’s $5 figure is the entry price for its Shared CPU family, not a promise that every region or size costs $5. The exact memory, storage and transfer attached to that price must be checked in the region where you will deploy. Shared CPU is economical because physical processor capacity is shared; sustained, latency-sensitive workloads may need a dedicated tier.
Why a low headline price can be misleading
- A plan may show a base charge while backups, snapshots, block storage or extra IPv4 addresses are separate.
- Transfer included in the plan differs widely; a cheap server with little allowance can cost more than a slightly dearer plan once egress is added.
- EU prices may exclude VAT, and regional catalogs can have different prices for the same nominal size.
- Introductory or annual prices in comparison articles may not equal the provider’s renewal price. Verify the recurring rate in the checkout screen.
VPS pricing comparison: compare equivalent resources
Use a specification-first comparison instead of sorting by the smallest monthly number. Record the following for every candidate:
- CPU allocation: note vCPU count and whether CPU is shared, burstable or dedicated. Dedicated CPU normally costs several times more than shared CPU at similar memory.
- Memory: compare RAM in gigabytes, not just the plan name. Leave headroom for the operating system, database cache and traffic spikes.
- Storage: record capacity and medium (SSD or NVMe when specified), then add the cost of extra volumes.
- Transfer: write down the included outbound allowance and the overage rate. Inbound traffic is not always charged, but do not assume that without checking the service terms.
- Region and tax: compare the same geographic region and identify whether the displayed amount includes VAT or sales tax.
- Billing model: determine whether the service is fixed monthly, hourly with a cap or metered by the second, and whether stopped or destroyed servers continue to incur storage charges.
- Renewal amount: use the recurring price, not a temporary sign-up discount, for a 12-month budget.
| Comparison question | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|
| Is CPU shared or dedicated? | Shared plans are cheaper but can experience contention; dedicated plans provide more predictable sustained performance. |
| How much transfer is included? | A plan with more transfer can be cheaper for media, downloads, backups or API traffic even when its base price is higher. |
| What is the overage rate? | Small per-GB charges become material when an application serves terabytes. |
| Does the price include tax? | Excluding VAT makes a displayed European price lower than the invoice for many customers. |
| Does the monthly cap apply? | An hourly server with a cap limits worst-case cost; an uncapped meter requires active shutdown controls. |
Hidden VPS costs and billing rules
Bandwidth and egress
DigitalOcean charges $0.01 per GiB for additional outbound transfer beyond the included allowance. Akamai’s extra egress is about $0.005 per GB in most regions, though the figure is region-dependent. A workload sending 1,000 GB beyond its allowance would therefore add roughly $10 on the DigitalOcean rate or about $5 on the stated Akamai rate, before any other services. Treat those calculations as illustrations; your plan and region determine the actual rate.

Hourly and per-second billing
DigitalOcean’s bundled-plan CPU Droplets are billed per second from 1 January 2026, with a minimum charge of 60 seconds or $0.01. Usage is capped at 672 hours (28 days) in a month, so leaving a server running for the entire billing month does not exceed its published monthly price for that Droplet. A server that is created and deleted quickly can therefore cost less than a full month, subject to the minimum charge and any attached storage.
Hetzner bills hourly with a monthly price cap: the hourly total cannot exceed the server’s monthly cap. Akamai’s rules change for certain products on 1 July 2026: G8 dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes and additional IPv4 addresses are billed for actual hours used with no monthly price cap. For those resources, an unattended instance can exceed the amount you expected from a capped plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStorage, backups and addresses
The base VPS price may not include managed backups, snapshots, additional block storage or extra IPv4 addresses. Price each item for the complete architecture, not just the compute instance. Keep separate backups in your budget even when the provider offers a low-cost snapshot option; a backup stored on the same platform does not protect against every account or regional failure.
Renewals and promotional rates
Many comparison guides display introductory or long-term prepayment rates. Because renewal pricing varies and was not consistently verifiable from provider pages, do not assume a promotional amount recurs. Before paying, expand the order summary and record the standard monthly rate, commitment term, taxes and cancellation rules.

How to set a 2026 VPS budget
Small website or development server
Start with $5–$10 monthly for compute. Choose a small shared-CPU instance, then reserve additional money for backups and a domain or DNS service if those are not already covered. Monitor memory: a 512 MiB plan can become unstable when a control panel, web server and database run together.
Modest production application
Budget $10–$30 for 2–4 vCPUs and 4–8 GB RAM, then add storage, backups and expected egress. This tier is often appropriate for a business website, API and database with moderate traffic. Keep at least one month of usage data before resizing so you can distinguish CPU saturation from insufficient memory or disk I/O.
Performance-sensitive or memory-heavy workload
Begin around $36–$60 for the verified dedicated-CPU and high-memory starting families listed above, then price the exact size. Dedicated CPU is justified when predictable sustained compute matters; high-memory plans are justified when the working set does not fit comfortably in ordinary RAM. GPU and very large configurations require a workload-specific quote and can exceed $2,000 per month.
Steps to calculate your real monthly VPS cost
- Define the workload: list the web server, application, database, background jobs and expected peak traffic.
- Set minimum resources: choose the lowest RAM, CPU and storage that leave operational headroom rather than fitting only today’s usage.
- Select a region: use the location closest to users or required data residency, then price that region specifically.
- Add transfer: estimate monthly outbound GB and multiply the excess by the provider’s published egress rate.
- Add persistent services: include volumes, snapshots, automated backups, monitoring and additional IP addresses.
- Apply tax and commitment terms: convert euros where necessary, add VAT or sales tax and use the recurring renewal price.
- Model scale-out: calculate the cost of a second server, staging environment and temporary test machines if your workflow needs them.
- Set alerts: configure spend notifications and automatic shutdown for uncapped hourly resources, especially GPUs and extra IPv4 addresses.
For example, a $10 compute plan is not a $10 budget if it needs a $3 backup service, $5 of extra storage and $8 of egress. Write the components separately so a future traffic increase has a visible cost impact.

Common VPS pricing mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by headline price: compare matching CPU, RAM, storage and transfer instead.
- Using an old price article: Hetzner’s 15 June 2026 increase makes pre-adjustment figures unreliable; check the live calculator.
- Ignoring VAT: add the applicable tax to any European price shown excluding VAT.
- Assuming stopped means free: attached disks, snapshots and reserved addresses can continue billing after a server is stopped.
- Underestimating egress: measure outbound traffic, not just page views, and include downloads, backups and API responses.
- Running uncapped resources unattended: use shutdown schedules and alerts for products billed hourly without a monthly cap.
- Confusing shared CPU with dedicated CPU: select the class based on performance consistency, not memory alone.
Is a VPS worth the price in 2026?
A VPS is usually the economical middle ground when shared hosting lacks isolation or configuration control, but a managed platform is worth considering if you cannot maintain Linux updates, firewalls, backups and monitoring. The cheapest VPS is not automatically the lowest-cost solution: administration time, downtime risk and unexpected transfer can exceed the compute charge.
For a self-managed small project, reserve $5–$10 monthly and confirm that the entry plan has enough memory. For a production service, start with a $10–$30 resource budget and price all supporting services. Move to dedicated CPU or high-memory tiers when measured contention or memory pressure—not a marketing label—shows that shared resources are the bottleneck.
What to verify before purchasing
- Live monthly and hourly prices for your exact region and operating-system image.
- Whether listed prices include VAT or sales tax.
- RAM, vCPU type, storage capacity and storage performance.
- Included transfer, egress overage and any separate bandwidth pools.
