VPS for Paperclip: Which Host Should You Choose in 2026?

Paperclip needs a Linux VPS with at least 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM to get started. DigitalOcean is the clearest documented option, while other providers should be compared by plan, region, and operating needs.

DigitalOcean Basic is the clearest documented starting point for a Paperclip VPS: Paperclip’s installation guide uses it as an example and its listed 1-vCPU, 2-GiB plan includes 50 GiB SSD storage and 2,000 GiB of transfer for $12 per month. That makes it a concrete choice, not a proven performance winner. Paperclip says a Linux VPS with 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM is enough to get started; the right host depends on your region, plan details, and comfort managing a server.

Which VPS should you use for Paperclip?

For a straightforward, documented setup, start by comparing DigitalOcean Basic with other plans that meet Paperclip’s published entry requirement. Paperclip’s installation guide also names AWS EC2, Google Compute Engine, Hetzner, Linode, and Vultr as viable Linux VPS providers. The guide presents them as deployment options, not as a ranked list.

Here is what the available evidence supports:

  • DigitalOcean Basic: Best documented starting point here: Paperclip uses it as an example, and DigitalOcean lists current specifications and rates for two relevant configurations.
  • Hetzner Cloud: A value-oriented alternative to price-check. Paperclip names it, but compare current regional plans before deciding whether it costs less for your requirements.
  • Linode, Vultr, AWS EC2, and Google Compute Engine: Other options named by Paperclip. Choose based on region, billing, existing cloud experience, and the plan’s actual resources rather than an unsupported provider ranking.

No independent Paperclip hosting benchmark establishes that one provider is faster or more reliable than the others. The choice is therefore a comparison of plans and operating workflow, not a performance award.

What does Paperclip need from a VPS?

Paperclip’s installation documentation says that any Linux VPS with 1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM is enough to get started. Its reference setup uses Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 LTS. The project README lists Node.js 24.11+ and pnpm 9.15+ as requirements; the CLI guide specifies Node.js 24.11.0 or newer for managed installation. Check the current project documentation before installing, since software requirements can change.

The common setup can use embedded PostgreSQL, so a separate database is not mandatory for every small instance. Paperclip’s VPS installation guide also describes hosted PostgreSQL as an option. For a persistent production deployment, plan for database migrations, backups, observability, and where agent runners will live—not just the initial VM.

DigitalOcean plans that meet the published baseline

DigitalOcean’s official price table, accessed October 7, 2026, lists these Basic Droplet configurations:

Configuration CPU and memory SSD Included transfer Listed rate
Basic Droplet 1 vCPU, 2 GiB 50 GiB 2,000 GiB $12/month
Basic Droplet 2 vCPUs, 2 GiB 60 GiB 3,000 GiB $18/month

These are DigitalOcean’s listed rates at the date above, not a full cross-provider comparison or a guarantee of final cost. Taxes, regional differences, or promotional terms may affect what you pay; check the live DigitalOcean Droplet pricing page before provisioning. DigitalOcean also states that per-second Droplet billing with a 60-second or $0.01 minimum took effect January 1, 2026.

The 1-vCPU configuration matches Paperclip’s published starting point. The 2-vCPU plan costs more and may suit a busier workload with more concurrent activity, but the minimum requirement does not establish that every instance needs the extra vCPU.

How to compare other Paperclip VPS options

Paperclip says its Linux setup commands are effectively similar across AWS EC2, Google Cloud Compute Engine, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Linode, Vultr, and similar services. That does not make their plans or bills interchangeable. Compare the actual configuration you intend to run:

  • Monthly cost: Find a plan that meets at least the 1-vCPU, 2-GB baseline, then include any relevant storage, network, backup, and billing charges.
  • CPU allocation: Check the vCPU count and whether the provider describes the CPU as shared or dedicated. Paperclip’s minimum gives a starting threshold, not a workload-specific sizing guarantee.
  • Disk: Compare SSD or NVMe capacity with your expected database, logs, and other persistent data needs.
  • Transfer: Check the included outbound allowance and the provider’s overage terms.
  • Region: Choose a data center near the people using Paperclip or the services it connects to, where available.
  • Operations: Consider how you will handle firewall rules, backups, updates, and support. Cloud providers differ in workflow as well as price.

Paperclip’s documentation names the alternatives but does not provide a like-for-like current price table for them. Check each provider’s official plan information for your chosen region and configuration instead of relying on a blanket claim that one is the cheapest.

What public deployment involves

A VPS alone does not make a Paperclip instance safely accessible on the public internet. Paperclip’s example setup uses a domain, a DNS A record pointing to the server’s public IPv4 address, HTTPS, and Nginx as a reverse proxy. The guide calls for authenticated mode and configuration of the public base URL and allowed hostname.

For the example firewall setup, allow inbound TCP 22 for SSH and ports 80 and 443 for HTTP and HTTPS. Keep Paperclip bound to 127.0.0.1 behind the reverse proxy; do not expose port 3100 directly to the internet. A low-cost VPS still means you are responsible for server updates, firewall configuration, certificate management, and backups.

Is Fly.io another VPS pick?

Fly.io is a separate deployment route rather than a conventional VPS plan in this comparison. Paperclip’s deployment guide describes it as a fast path and a single VPS as the “boring backup.” Consider that route if you want a container-oriented deployment workflow, but do not treat it as a directly comparable VPS provider award.

Recommendation

Choose DigitalOcean Basic if you want the most clearly documented first VPS in this comparison and its live plan details suit your region and budget. Price-check Hetzner if value is your priority, and compare Linode, Vultr, AWS, or Google Cloud against the same requirements. For any provider, the deciding factors are the plan’s resources and allowances, location, billing, and the amount of server administration you are prepared to handle.
