For a useful comparison, record the settings and server context, repeat the same tests, and add an application-level benchmark when the decision concerns a real workload. No single score establishes how fast a VPS will be for every task.
What a VPS benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
A VPS benchmark measures a particular resource under particular conditions. A CPU score does not tell you disk latency; a network throughput test does not measure storage; and a short synthetic run does not establish that performance will remain stable under sustained load.

YABS: a convenient first pass
The YABS project describes its script as a way to estimate Linux server performance using fio, iperf3, and Geekbench. Its README documents options to disable or reduce test categories. The README currently lists Geekbench 6 as the default system test and other versions as available through flags; check the current README for up-to-date options and dependencies.
#1 Best Overall
- 【USB Cable Performance Testing】Test USB cable continuity, functionality (charging, data transfer, high-speed signal), and measure internal resistance for power efficiency. Verify ground wire connection to outer shell for cable integrity, safety, and shielding.
- 【Type-C eMarker Chip Reading】Reads eMarker chip parameters in Type-C cables, providing detailed performance information (e.g., maximum current, voltage, data transfer rates) to help users fully understand cable capabilities and ensure safe, efficient device usage.
- 【High-Definition Color Display】 The USB cable checker features a 2.4-inch high-definition color display. With the left white button, you can easily switch between function pages to view real-time detailed status of the cable, including internal resistance, power delivery efficiency, and cable quality. This helps you quickly identify inferior cables.
- 【Wide Compatibility】The usb tester can accurately identify and verify USB cable versions, including USB 2.0 and USB 3.2. It integrates PD 3.0 and PD 3.1 protocol detection functions, enabling quick verification of whether the cable supports the latest PD 3.0/3.1 standards, ensuring the cable meets high-power charging and fast data transfer requirements.
- 【Multiple Power Supply Options】The black button on the left can flexibly switch the power supply mode, and support the use of AAA battery or Type C 5V to stably supply power to the USB tester
Take care with the network portion: the project warns that its default iperf runs can try to max out the port for roughly 20 seconds per location, split between download and upload. If the VPS has a bandwidth cap or serves users, reduce the locations or disable network tests. YABS downloads and executes a script and external binaries, so review the project and its security notice before running it.
sysbench: focused CPU and memory checks
sysbench includes CPU, memory, file I/O, thread, mutex, and OLTP-style database workloads. Use it to investigate a specific resource or workload rather than treating its output as a universal server rating. A sysbench result represents an application only when the tested workload meaningfully resembles that application.

fio: storage performance depends on the workload
fio lets you define a storage workload through job-file parameters. A single “disk speed” number hides important differences: small random requests and large sequential transfers exercise storage differently, as do reads versus writes and shallow versus deep queues.
Recommended Free Tools
- Block size: the size of each I/O operation. The VPS benchmarking guide uses 4K for random I/O and 1M for sequential I/O as examples, not universal settings.
- Queue depth: how many I/O requests are outstanding. Queue depth 1 can emphasize latency; larger depths can target throughput.
- Read/write mix: the proportion of reads and writes changes the workload.
- Access pattern: random and sequential access can produce different results.
- Duration: a short run and a sustained run may reveal different behavior.
Choose settings that resemble the storage activity you care about, report them with the result, and remember that fio testing creates I/O load on the VPS.

iperf3: bandwidth between two endpoints
iperf3 actively measures achievable bandwidth on an IP network and reports throughput or bitrate, loss, and other parameters. The result describes the network path between the VPS and the selected remote endpoint—not the server’s disk or a guaranteed application transfer rate. Include the endpoint’s location and relevant settings so another run can be interpreted meaningfully.
Geekbench and sustained stability
Geekbench is the system-performance component in YABS. Note its version when saving or comparing results because available versions and defaults can change. A short benchmark answers a different question from a prolonged endurance test: VPSBenchmarks says its provider trials include a 24-hour sustained CPU endurance test alongside web-server tests, network transfers, sysbench, and YABS tests. That is one publisher’s methodology, not a requirement for every VPS test.

Run a repeatable VPS benchmark
- Record the server context. Note the plan name, data-center location, operating system, visible CPU model and vCPU count, memory, disk type and size, date and time, and whether production work was running.
- Run a bundled overview. Use YABS for a broad first pass. Before starting its network tests, consider bandwidth limits and whether test traffic could affect users; reduce locations or disable that category when appropriate.
- Investigate specific results. Use sysbench for CPU or memory, fio for storage, or iperf3 between relevant network endpoints. Preserve each tool’s workload settings with its output.
- Save a baseline. Keep the tool version, options, workload parameters, server context, and results. Rerun the same tests and settings when comparing plans or investigating a change.
- Test the application when that is what matters. RamNode’s guide points to pgbench for PostgreSQL, sysbench OLTP for MySQL or MariaDB, wrk or k6 for HTTP, iperf3 between instances, and redis-benchmark for Redis. Select a test that represents the service and workload you intend to run.
Interpret results in the context of your workload
Compare the dimensions that matter
For a plan comparison, look at the characteristics that map to your intended use: single- and multi-thread CPU behavior; memory; random and sequential storage performance, including latency and throughput; network throughput from relevant locations; application response and capacity; and sustained stability. Keep location, test date, and workload settings alongside the measurements.

Account for shared-host effects
A VPS shares physical infrastructure with other workloads, and its delivered performance can be affected by CPU steal, storage backend, host generation, and neighbor density. RamNode’s guide recommends watching %st in top during stress testing as a signal of CPU time taken by the hypervisor; sustained steal can point to host preemption or neighbor contention. Treat any threshold in that guide as its rule of thumb, not a universal cutoff.
VPSBenchmarks says it buys VPS instances as a regular customer for public trials and tests providers using the same methodology. It also discloses advertising and Featured Provider subscription support. That is the publisher’s account of its approach; it does not establish that every possible source of bias has been eliminated.
