When a VPN can help—and when it cannot
Privacy on shared networks
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server and changes the route your connection takes. That can be useful when you are streaming on a public or shared network and want the connection between your device and VPN server encrypted. It does not make you anonymous to every service you use, and it does not replace a legitimate account with the streaming platform.

A possible route-specific improvement
If a particular route between your internet provider and a service is being throttled or performing poorly, a VPN may route around that path. This is a possibility to test, not a general performance benefit. A VPN adds an intermediary route and encryption overhead, either of which can increase latency or reduce throughput. It does not increase the capacity of your broadband connection. CatchON TV’s guidance describes the same trade-off: VPNs and IPTV.

Buffering is not proof that you need a VPN
Buffering can have many causes, including congestion on your home network, Wi-Fi interference, the streaming service, or the route to that service. A VPN is not a dependable cure. If your connection is already marginal, the added route can make playback worse.

Test the stream before changing your setup
- Choose one live channel or event you can access through your official account. Use the same device, network, stream quality, and approximate time for each comparison.
- Play it with the VPN off. Note whether playback starts promptly and whether it buffers or drops.
- Turn on the VPN and repeat the test with the same stream. If possible, repeat the off/on comparison at a similar time on another occasion; a single result may reflect temporary network or service conditions.
- Keep the VPN on for streaming only if the repeated comparison shows a useful benefit for your purpose—such as privacy on a shared network—without unacceptable loss of quality or stability.
Do not compare unrelated channels or different times and treat the result as a VPN performance test. Those changes can affect playback independently of the VPN.
Choose device-level or router setup
Use the device app for targeted coverage
If the TV or streaming device supports your VPN provider’s app, installing it there lets you control the tunnel for that device without routing the entire household through it. Compatibility is model- and provider-specific, so check the current instructions for your exact device before subscribing or following setup steps.

For example, Proton says its paid plans include streaming, supports Android TV, and documents sideloading its Android TV app on Amazon Fire TV. Its guide also cautions that Secure Core is not optimized for streaming and recommends maintaining a legal, official streaming account. Use a router only when network-wide coverage makes sense
A VPN configured on a router can cover devices that do not have compatible VPN apps, and it can protect several devices through one network setup. The trade-off is that the VPN applies across the network: other household devices also use the tunnel and share its performance cost. Router hardware, especially a low-cost model, may become the throughput bottleneck when encrypting traffic. Confirm that the router supports the VPN protocol and can handle the throughput you need before configuring it.

For a single TV or streaming stick, a supported device app usually gives you narrower control. Router setup is more relevant when several devices need coverage or an unsupported device must use the tunnel.
If a streaming service blocks playback
Streaming platforms may detect VPN traffic, and access can change by provider, service, region, and time. Switching VPN servers may help in some cases, but it is not reliable and no provider can be assumed to unlock a particular service. Comparitech’s dashboard, updated October 2, 2026, tracked 10 VPNs across 15 services and 9 regions over a 28-day window. It displayed 100 unblocked, 73 blocked, and 33 partial results among 206 checks. Those are results from that dashboard snapshot—not a universal success rate or a prediction of future access: Comparitech’s streaming dashboard.

Access restrictions and service terms vary. Use an official account, check the relevant platform terms and local rules, and do not treat a VPN as permission to use an unlicensed service or a guaranteed way around a blackout. Proton’s guidance also advises users to keep an official streaming account.

What to compare when choosing a VPN
Rankings and availability change, so assess a VPN against your actual device, service, and region rather than assuming a general “streaming” label guarantees access. Useful comparison points include:

Security.org describes evaluating streaming access across services and regions, stream quality, server availability, and device support: its streaming VPN methodology. TechRadar also notes that access can change and discusses live-event performance caveats: its 2026 streaming VPN roundup. Treat any provider ranking or access claim as dated rather than permanent. Comparitech explains its measurement approach and says its scores do not use affiliate revenue or commission data: Comparitech’s methodology.
Troubleshoot common VPN streaming problems
- Playback buffers more with the VPN on: Turn it off and repeat the same stream test. If performance improves repeatedly, the tunnel, server route, or device/router capacity may be the bottleneck; do not keep the VPN on as a buffering fix.
- The app or stream will not load with the VPN on: The service may be detecting or blocking VPN traffic. Try a different server only if that is permitted by the service terms, then retest; switching is not guaranteed to work.
- One device works but another does not: Check the exact model’s VPN app support and the provider’s current device instructions. Support for Android TV, for example, does not establish support for every television or streaming stick.
- Several devices slow down after router setup: The router now sends their traffic through the VPN. Check router protocol and throughput capability, then compare performance with the router VPN disabled. A device-level app may be a better fit if only one screen needs the tunnel.
- A live event is unstable even without the VPN: The VPN may not be the cause. Compare the same event over a wired or stronger local connection if available, and check whether other services or devices on the network are also struggling.
