Availability depends on the sports service’s regional rights and location rules, whether it detects your network setup, and whether your device supports the option. A VPN can encrypt traffic, while Smart DNS may be easier to configure on some smart TVs—but Smart DNS does not provide VPN-style encryption or hide your IP address.
What determines whether a game is available?
Start with the sports service’s rules for the destination and the event. Rights can vary by region, and a subscription does not necessarily include every game everywhere. The NBA says League Pass availability and content rights vary by region. ESPN says blackout enforcement can depend on the location used to access ESPN or an applicable third-party service.

Check the official service’s current availability and blackout guidance for both the destination and the match before traveling. Neither a VPN nor Smart DNS changes the service’s underlying rights policy, and changing a network setting does not establish that a stream is authorized or available.

VPN vs. Smart DNS: the practical differences
| Decision factor | VPN | Smart DNS |
|---|---|---|
| How it affects streaming access | A service may block or flag VPN use. The NBA says VPNs and proxies are unsupported for League Pass and may prevent content from loading. | Some services and devices may support it, but compatibility is selective and service-specific. Do not assume a sports service will work without confirmation. |
| Privacy on public Wi-Fi | Relevant when you want encrypted traffic between your device and the VPN provider. It does not guarantee anonymity. | Not a substitute for an encrypted VPN connection. SmartyDNS says its Smart DNS does not encrypt traffic or hide your IP address. |
| Device fit | Check whether your VPN provider supports the device and offers a workable setup for it. | NordVPN describes smart TVs as a possible use case, but cautions that Smart DNS may not work with all streaming services. |
| Sports rights and blackouts | Does not change the service’s regional rights or blackout rules. | Does not change the service’s regional rights or blackout rules. |
| Paid sports subscription | A VPN does not replace a sports subscription. | SmartyDNS says a paid streaming subscription is still required; Smart DNS does not replace it. |
When a VPN may make sense
Choose a VPN when encrypted traffic on hotel, airport, or other public Wi-Fi is part of your goal, or when the device and service support a VPN setup that fits your needs. Treat streaming compatibility as a separate question: a sports service can reject VPN or proxy connections even when the VPN itself is working normally.

The NBA Help Center’s page, updated September 13, 2026, states: “Because NBA League Pass availability and content rights can vary by region, VPNs and proxies are not supported and may prevent content from loading properly.” Netflix also documents VPN and proxy detection in its VPN viewing guidance. These examples show why a VPN should not be treated as a reliable way to access any particular game or subscription while abroad.
When Smart DNS may make sense
Smart DNS may be worth considering when you want a network-level option that a particular streaming service and device explicitly support—for example, a smart TV that does not offer a convenient VPN app. But support varies: NordVPN says its Smart DNS feature may not work with all streaming services. Its documentation is not confirmation that any particular sports service supports the feature.

Smart DNS is not the choice for protecting traffic on public Wi-Fi. SmartyDNS says its service neither encrypts traffic nor hides the user’s IP address. Those are provider statements about its own service, not independent tests of every Smart DNS product.
How to prepare before you travel
- Check the event and destination. Consult the official sports service’s availability and blackout rules for the country or region where you will watch. Confirm whether the specific event is included.
- Check your account and subscription. Verify that your plan includes the stream and that you can sign in on the device you plan to use. Smart DNS does not replace a paid subscription.
- Check device support. Look up the provider’s current setup instructions for your phone, computer, or TV. Do not infer sports-service compatibility from general Smart DNS or VPN support.
- Decide whether privacy protection matters. If you want encrypted traffic on public Wi-Fi, Smart DNS alone does not meet that need. A VPN is the relevant type of tool, subject to the streaming service’s rules and detection.
- Keep a direct connection as a troubleshooting option. If the service reports a location or proxy error, test without VPN, proxy, private relay, or Smart DNS settings, then follow the service’s official troubleshooting steps.
If the stream reports a location error
Do not assume the subscription is broken or that switching providers will solve the problem. Location checks can be affected by VPNs, proxies, private relays, DNS services, and other network configurations. For its 7027 error, the NBA recommends disabling VPNs, proxies, private relays, and similar location-obscuring services; it also notes that DNS services or network configurations can trigger the error.

- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
- Turn off any VPN, proxy, private relay, or Smart DNS setting you enabled.
- Reconnect using the ordinary network connection available at your destination.
- Try the stream again and consult the sports service’s official error guidance if it still fails.
- If the event remains unavailable, check the service’s destination-specific rights and blackout rules rather than treating a network tool as an access guarantee.
Which should you choose?
- Choose a VPN if encryption on public Wi-Fi is important and your device supports it; do not count on it to bypass a sports service’s location controls.
- Consider Smart DNS only if the specific service and device support it, and you do not need VPN-style encryption or IP hiding from that connection.
- Choose neither as an access workaround until you have checked the event’s official availability and blackout rules for your destination.
For the cited guidance, see NordVPN’s Smart DNS explanation and SmartyDNS’s Smart DNS FAQ. Their descriptions apply to their own services; they do not establish universal compatibility or results.
