There is no protocol that is best for everyone. WireGuard is a focused, UDP-only option with peers configured through public keys; OpenVPN offers UDP or TCP transport choices; and IKEv2/IPsec is suited to environments that rely on negotiated IPsec connections and managed authentication. Choose based on compatibility, configuration and deployment needs—not a universal speed or security ranking.
How the three VPN protocols differ
| Protocol | How it works | Configuration model | Best question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | Encapsulates IP datagrams over UDP. | Peers authenticate using public keys configured out of band and associated with allowed IP addresses. Its protocol design has no negotiation or cryptographic agility. | Can your setup manage peer keys and use UDP? |
| OpenVPN | Encapsulates IP packets or Ethernet frames; can run over UDP or TCP. | Uses TLS or pre-shared keys for key establishment, with transport and configuration choices depending on the client and server. | Do you need transport options or compatibility with an existing OpenVPN deployment? |
| IKEv2/IPsec | IKEv2 negotiates and maintains Security Associations; ESP commonly protects the tunneled IP traffic. | Negotiates security associations and algorithm suites from those supported by the deployment. | Does your environment rely on interoperable IPsec, managed authentication or platform-managed VPN? |
These are architectural distinctions, not a ranking of overall security, privacy or speed. The IETF’s RFC 8922 surveys WireGuard and OpenVPN alongside other security protocols. For IPsec, RFC 7296 defines IKEv2’s role in authentication and Security Association management.
What each option means in practice
WireGuard: simple protocol design, configuration outside the protocol
WireGuard uses a narrowly specified cryptographic design and UDP transport. Its official protocol documentation lists ChaCha20 with Poly1305, Curve25519, BLAKE2s, SipHash24 and HKDF. It describes periodic handshakes that establish symmetric traffic keys and provide forward secrecy through key rotation. Those are protocol documentation claims, not an independent audit or a guarantee that every implementation is configured correctly.
The fixed design can suit a straightforward peer VPN, but richer identity, policy distribution or pushed configuration must be handled by surrounding systems. The IETF survey notes that WireGuard offers no extensibility, negotiation or cryptographic agility; this is a design trade-off rather than an automatic advantage or flaw.

OpenVPN: transport choice and deployment flexibility
OpenVPN can tunnel IP packets or Ethernet frames over either UDP or TCP, and it can use TLS or pre-shared keys for key establishment. That gives it transport choices WireGuard does not offer in the cited protocol comparison. Whether a particular client or VPN provider exposes those choices depends on its implementation and configuration.
A TCP tunnel can add reliability layering when the tunneled traffic itself uses reliable transports. The practical effect depends on the network and workload, so this property alone does not establish that OpenVPN is always slower.

IKEv2/IPsec: distinguish negotiation from traffic protection
IKEv2 is not, by itself, the packet-encryption protocol. In a common modern IPsec VPN, IKEv2 performs mutual authentication and establishes and maintains Security Associations, while Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) protects the IP traffic. Which algorithms are enabled and preferred depends on the deployment; RFC 8247 provides IKEv2 algorithm implementation requirements and usage guidance.
Choose by network and deployment needs
- Choose WireGuard when UDP works on the network and your device, app or administrator can manage public-key peer configuration. It is a focused choice for deployments that do not need protocol-level negotiation.
- Consider OpenVPN when UDP/TCP transport choice or compatibility with an existing OpenVPN setup matters. Confirm which transport and authentication options your specific client and server actually support.
- Consider IKEv2/IPsec when the network already uses IPsec, or managed authentication and platform-integrated deployment are requirements. Verify support for the exact device, operating system and management setup.
If a network blocks VPN traffic, the protocol name alone does not establish that a connection will work. OpenVPN’s TCP option is a transport choice, not proof of universal blocking resistance; actual behavior depends on the network and VPN implementation.

Apple support is specific to its platforms and versions
Apple’s platform security guide, published 28 January 2026, documents IKEv2/IPsec authentication options including shared secrets, RSA or ECDSA certificates, EAP-MSCHAPv2 and EAP-TLS. It describes VPN On Demand, Per-app VPN and Always On VPN for specified operating systems and deployment conditions. The guide also says devices running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 and watchOS 26 or later can be configured for additional ML-KEM key exchanges.
These details describe Apple’s documented support, not equivalent availability on other platforms. Check the exact OS version, VPN app or provider, and any device-management requirements before choosing based on a platform feature.

How to compare speed and security claims
Speed depends on the test conditions
No universal speed winner is established by the protocol specifications. A meaningful comparison requires a dated, controlled test using the same hardware, network, endpoints, client software, configuration and workload. Treat provider speed claims as results for their stated test conditions, not guarantees for every connection.
A protocol label does not certify a deployment
Security also depends on implementation, authentication choices, configuration and software updates. Algorithm names and a protocol label do not prove that a particular VPN service or device is secure. Check what the provider or administrator supports and how the connection is configured.
