VPN Encryption: What It Protects—and Whether It Covers Everything

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its server only when that traffic uses the tunnel. Split tunneling, DNS routing, and connection drops can leave gaps; HTTPS protects the browser-to-site connection separately.

A VPN encrypts the traffic routed through its tunnel between your device and the VPN server. It does not automatically encrypt every connection from your phone or computer: split tunneling, DNS or routing exceptions, and a dropped tunnel can leave some traffic outside it. HTTPS provides a separate layer of encryption between your browser and a website.

What does VPN encryption protect?

A VPN creates an encrypted connection, or tunnel, between your device and a VPN server. Traffic routed through that tunnel is protected on the path from your device to that server. The encryption does not automatically continue beyond the VPN server to the website or other destination.

That means a VPN changes which parties handle your connection; it does not make all activity invisible. Your local network and internet service provider can generally see that your device is connecting to a VPN endpoint, while the VPN operator handles tunneled traffic at its server. What the operator can see or retain depends on the service and its practices.

Does a VPN encrypt all traffic from your device?

Not necessarily. A full-tunnel setup routes general internet traffic through the VPN. With split tunneling, selected apps or destinations can bypass the tunnel and connect directly, while other traffic still uses the VPN. Microsoft documents split tunneling as an enterprise configuration, including configurations where selected Microsoft 365 endpoints bypass a corporate VPN: Microsoft Learn: VPN split tunneling for Microsoft 365.

The actual coverage depends on the VPN app, operating system, route rules, and user or administrator settings. A “connected” status by itself does not establish that every app or destination is using the tunnel.

Can DNS or a dropped connection bypass the tunnel?

DNS requests

DNS translates a domain name into the network address needed to connect. A VPN may route DNS queries through its tunnel to a VPN resolver, but configuration exceptions can send queries to an ISP or another resolver instead. In that case, the resolver may learn the requested domain names even if the later website connection uses HTTPS. Check your VPN provider’s documentation for its DNS behavior and use a DNS leak check to see whether queries appear to be leaving through an unexpected resolver.

When the VPN connection drops

If the tunnel fails, ordinary internet traffic may resume over the regular connection unless the VPN client blocks it. A kill switch is intended to prevent that exposure by stopping internet traffic while the VPN is unavailable. Its behavior depends on the client and settings, so treat it as a protective feature rather than a guarantee that every packet is blocked under every failure. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends using a kill switch as part of VPN protection: NCSC: Virtual Private Network (VPN). Technical discussion of leakage in dual-stack VPN setups is available in IETF RFC 7359.

Why HTTPS still matters

HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and a website where supported. It protects a different leg from VPN encryption: the VPN tunnel protects traffic between your device and the VPN server, while HTTPS protects browser-to-site traffic. Use HTTPS whether or not you use a VPN.

Encryption does not prove that a website is legitimate. A fraudulent site can use HTTPS too; if you submit information to a scammer, encryption can protect the connection while still delivering that information to the scammer. The FTC explains this distinction in its guidance on public Wi-Fi and connection safety.

What a VPN does not guarantee

  • That every app or connection uses the tunnel: split tunneling and route exceptions can send selected traffic directly.
  • That every DNS query is private from your ISP: DNS routing depends on the app and configuration.
  • That traffic stays encrypted after the VPN server: protection beyond that endpoint depends on services such as HTTPS.
  • That nobody can see your activity: the VPN operator handles tunneled traffic at its endpoint, and the destination receives the requests you make.
  • That a site is trustworthy: encryption protects a connection, not the honesty of the party on the other end.

What to check in a VPN app

If your goal is to route as much traffic as possible through the VPN, check the settings and documentation for the specific app and device rather than relying only on its connection indicator.
