A VPN app saying “Connected” does not prove that every app used the VPN route—or explain a warning about an event in the past. First identify who sent the warning and when, then check the IP address, DNS, and (if relevant) torrent-client routing while the VPN is connected. Those checks show what is happening now; they cannot by themselves establish what happened at the time named in an older notice.
First, identify what kind of warning you received
Keep the notice and note its sender, alleged event date and time (including time zone), and any IP address it lists. An ISP or rights-holder copyright notice is not the same as a streaming site’s location or proxy warning, and neither is the same as a message from your VPN provider. The distinction matters because browser location signals may explain a website’s location warning, but do not, on their own, explain an ISP copyright notice.

Do not assume a leak you find today caused an earlier notice. To investigate a past event, compare the notice’s timestamp and alleged IP with any relevant VPN, torrent-client, device, and router records you have.
Check whether traffic uses the VPN now
- Connect to the VPN. Note the VPN server or endpoint shown in the app.
- Check your public IP. Use an external IP checker and confirm that the observed address reflects the VPN route, not your home ISP’s public address. PIA describes a public-IP check in its IP address checking guide; ExpressVPN also documents checking your IP address.
- Run a DNS leak test. Check whether the reported DNS servers are associated with the VPN rather than your ISP. ExpressVPN’s DNS leak test guidance says to contact its support team if a leak is detected despite a successful connection.
These are snapshots of your configuration at test time. A result that looks correct now does not reconstruct the route used for past traffic.

If peer-to-peer traffic is involved, inspect the torrent client
Confirm the server permits P2P
VPN providers do not necessarily permit peer-to-peer traffic on every server. Check the provider’s current server guidance and select a server it identifies as supporting P2P. Proton VPN, for example, explains how its app identifies P2P servers.
Bind the client to the VPN interface
Where the torrent client offers a network-interface or binding setting, verify that it is set to the VPN interface—not the regular internet connection. Proton VPN’s P2P and torrenting guidance warns that selecting the regular connection instead of Proton VPN can expose the real IP while torrenting, even when the kill switch is enabled. Menu names and interface labels vary by client and operating system, so use the current instructions for your versions. Use only authorized, benign material when checking configuration; copyrighted content is not an appropriate test.

Check what happens if the VPN connection drops
A kill switch and torrent-client interface binding are separate safeguards. Review the VPN’s kill-switch setting, then verify that the client cannot continue over the ordinary network if the tunnel is interrupted. Follow the VPN provider’s and client’s current instructions; app menus change, so old screenshots or generic paths may not match your setup. A test of interruption behavior can help assess the current configuration, but it cannot prove what occurred during an earlier event.
If a website shows the wrong location, check other signals
A website may infer location from more than your public IP. PIA describes factors including DNS routing, browser location permission, WebRTC, cookies or cached data, and device location services in its guidance on hiding your IP address and preventing IP leaks. If the issue is a site’s location warning, review that site’s browser permission and your device’s location access, as well as the VPN and DNS results above.

WebRTC changes can affect real-time features. CyberGhost cautions that disabling WebRTC may affect video calls, voice calls, screen sharing, and some peer-to-peer applications; check those features after changing settings. Its connection-leak guidance describes the trade-off.

- If a current IP or DNS test shows your ISP route while the VPN app says connected: contact VPN support with your operating system, VPN app version, protocol, server, and test result.
- If current tests pass but the notice concerns an earlier event: compare its time and IP with available VPN, torrent-client, device, and router records. A passing test today cannot establish past routing.
- If the notice may have legal consequences: get qualified advice for the relevant jurisdiction. General VPN support material cannot determine the cause or legal effect of an individual notice.
When assessing a VPN for this troubleshooting need, compare documented IP and DNS checks, kill-switch behavior and supported devices, P2P server rules, client-binding guidance, and the provider’s published support or notice-handling information. Provider statements describe that provider’s own policies; they do not establish a universal ranking or guarantee that a service prevents notices or makes a user anonymous.
