Pixel users are seeing a quiet but important change: the older Google Fi VPN experience is being replaced by something labeled VPN by Google. Functionally, it’s still a VPN-style privacy feature, but the app surfaces, settings location, and some behaviors may differ.
This guide focuses on what to do now—how to confirm you’re using VPN by Google, how to enable it, and what to troubleshoot when the transition doesn’t go smoothly.

What is VPN by Google, and why it replaced Google Fi VPN on Pixel
VPN by Google is Google’s newer, Pixel-friendly VPN feature. On many Pixels, it’s replacing the older branding and control surface associated with Google Fi VPN, especially where VPN control is better integrated into the device and Google’s services.
Practically, you should think of this as a product/UX replacement: the service you rely on for encrypted traffic is still the goal, but the path to turn it on and the status indicators you look for can change.

What stays the same vs what changes
Most users will notice three buckets of change: where the toggle lives, how the VPN status is displayed, and how quickly the phone reconnects after enabling or disabling.
| Area | Usually the same | May change with VPN by Google |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Encrypt traffic between your phone and the VPN network | Where you see the active status and how it’s managed |
| Everyday use | Browser and app traffic continues over a protected path | Reconnect behavior when toggling the VPN |
| Controls | One clear on/off option | Different menus (Google Fi app vs Pixel Settings) |
| Troubleshooting | Restart/reconnect fixes often still apply | Different logs/settings path when you report issues |
Prerequisites on your Pixel
Before you try to enable VPN by Google, make sure your Pixel can meet the basic requirements that usually gate VPN features on Android.
- Android updates: Update to the latest available Android version on your Pixel. If you’re on an older build, the UI may not show the new VPN entry.
- Google apps updated: Update the Google Fi app and Google services from the Play Store.
- Permissions: Ensure the VPN feature isn’t blocked by battery or “restricted” background permissions.
- Connection state: Have at least Wi‑Fi or mobile data available so you can test after enabling.
How to check whether you’re already on VPN by Google
You can confirm which VPN you’re using by looking for the feature name and where the toggle appears. Don’t assume it based on prior experience with Google Fi VPN.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open the Google Fi app (if you use Fi on that Pixel).
- Look for a section labeled VPN and check whether it says VPN by Google.
- If you don’t see it in Fi, open Settings on your Pixel and search for VPN.
- On the VPN screen (or search results), confirm the entry name includes VPN by Google.
If you only see the older “Google Fi VPN” wording, your device may not have finished receiving the UI replacement yet.
Set up VPN by Google on Pixel (two common paths)
On Pixel, VPN controls often show up in one of two places: inside the Google Fi app, or directly in Pixel Settings. Use the path that matches what you see.
Path 1: Through the Google Fi app
If your Pixel has the VPN feature surfaced inside Fi, this is the fastest route.

- Open the Google Fi app.
- Find VPN in the app’s main menu or settings area.
- Toggle VPN by Google to On.
- Wait for the connection indicator to confirm it’s active (the label may change to a “connected/secured” state).
Path 2: Through Pixel Settings
If Fi doesn’t show the VPN controls on your device, Pixel Settings is where you’ll usually find the VPN entry.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Network & internet, then look for VPN (or use the Settings search bar and type VPN).
- Select VPN by Google.
- Toggle the VPN to On and confirm it changes to an active/connected state.
After enabling, give the phone 10–30 seconds to stabilize network routing before you run tests.
Verify it’s working (and understand what “working” means)
VPN “working” should show up in two ways: a connected status on your phone and expected behavior in apps. If either is missing, treat it as not active.
- Status indicators: Confirm you see “connected” for VPN by Google in the VPN screen (or within Fi).
- Network sanity check: Open a site like example.com or a known external service and ensure it loads immediately.
- Route change check (optional): If you use an IP-checking website, you should see a different IP than your direct connection.
Be aware: some apps use embedded DNS, private networking, or caching. If you’re testing with one app, try a second app to confirm the VPN path is actually being used.
Common issues and fixes
Transitions from Google Fi VPN to VPN by Google can fail in predictable ways—missing app updates, stuck VPN profiles, background restriction, or occasional network routing hiccups.

- Restart your Pixel.
- Confirm Wi‑Fi and mobile data both work normally with VPN off.
- Update Google Fi (and any Google components) via the Play Store.
- Re-check VPN by searching VPN in Settings and selecting the VPN by Google entry again.
Traffic doesn’t seem protected
Sometimes the VPN status reads “connected,” but apps don’t behave like you expect. This usually points to caching, DNS, or app-specific networking.
- Force-close the affected app, then reopen it.
- Toggle VPN off, wait 15 seconds, and toggle back on.
- Test with a different browser session or a second app.
- If possible, clear DNS/caches in the testing app (browser) and try again.
Connectivity drops or apps can’t reach the internet
If enabling VPN causes “No connection” errors, it’s often a routing mismatch or a captive-portal problem.
- Switch networks: try moving from Wi‑Fi to mobile data (or vice versa) and then re-enable VPN.
- If you’re on public Wi‑Fi with a captive portal, sign in first, then enable VPN.
- Check for VPN permissions being restricted in Android battery optimization settings.
Battery drain or background behavior feels worse
VPNs can add persistent network activity. If your battery drops unusually fast after switching, adjust how Android treats background processes.
- Open Settings → Battery (or Battery & device care, depending on your Android version).
- Check for Background restrictions or app battery optimization entries related to Google Fi / VPN by Google.
- Allow background activity for the relevant Google apps.
- Reboot after changing restrictions to ensure Android applies them cleanly.
Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi calling behavior changes
Some communications features can be sensitive to routing changes. If calling quality or handoff worsens after enabling VPN, try this sequence.
- Test with VPN toggled on and off while using Wi‑Fi calling (if enabled).
- If your issue is consistent, consider using VPN only on untrusted networks and leaving it off during calls.
- Update carrier services and Google apps, then retry.
Security and privacy considerations
A VPN can improve confidentiality by encrypting traffic between your device and the VPN service. It doesn’t make you anonymous in every sense, and it doesn’t replace good account security.
What data you should and shouldn’t expect to be hidden
- Generally improved: Protection of traffic content in transit and reduction of exposure to local network eavesdropping.
- Not a guarantee: Your identity may still be visible to the websites you visit through logins, trackers, and account-linked sessions.
- Performance trade-off: Encryption and routing changes can add latency depending on your location and network.
Split tunneling expectations
Many consumer VPNs route all app traffic through the tunnel. If you expected per-app selection (split tunneling) and don’t see it, assume the VPN is operating as an “all traffic” privacy layer unless VPN by Google explicitly offers per-app controls in your build.

Alternatives if you need a different VPN model
If VPN by Google doesn’t match your needs—such as specific per-app routing, advanced kill-switch behavior, or a different server selection model—consider alternatives.

Some Android devices support other VPN profiles. If your Pixel shows only VPN by Google, you may need to install a provider that offers an Android VPN profile.
Third-party VPN apps
Third-party VPN providers typically offer features like server lists, protocols, and per-app policies. Choose one with a clear Android VPN implementation and a reputable privacy policy.
When testing alternatives, compare outcomes that matter: connection stability, app compatibility, and battery impact—then stick with what behaves predictably on your daily networks.
FAQs
Is VPN by Google the same thing as Google Fi VPN?
It’s the same category of protection (a VPN-style encrypted tunnel), but the branding and control surface are different. On Pixel, you should expect the setting location and status indicators to align with VPN by Google rather than the older Fi VPN labeling.
Will switching change my IP address?
When the VPN is active, your outbound traffic typically exits through the VPN network, so an IP-check site should show a different IP than your direct connection. Exact results depend on the service configuration and network type.

Why does VPN by Google affect some apps more than others?
Apps vary in how they do DNS, maintain sessions, and pin connections. After enabling or disabling a VPN, some apps may need a refresh (force-close and reopen) to fully adopt the new network path.
What should I do if I can’t find VPN by Google anywhere?
Update Google Fi and your Pixel software, then search Settings for VPN. If the entry still doesn’t appear, confirm you’re using a Pixel model and region that supports the feature and check whether Fi account/VPN entitlements are active.
Does enabling VPN protect me on cellular data and Wi‑Fi?
Typically, yes—VPN protection applies to outbound traffic regardless of whether you’re on Wi‑Fi or mobile data, as long as the VPN is enabled. Verify by checking the active status and doing a simple connectivity test.

The shift from Google Fi VPN to VPN by Google is mostly a control-and-label update on Pixel, not a brand-new concept. Once you find the VPN by Google toggle and verify the connected status, your day-to-day privacy workflow should feel familiar.
If something breaks during the transition, treat it like any VPN integration issue: update apps, restart, switch networks, and re-test with 2–3 different apps to separate “VPN not active” from “app cached/blocked networking.”
