In Volatiles, each successful enemy wave lets you add a tile to the arena—and that tile can shape both your character’s growth and the fights ahead. The result is a roguelike action-survival game in which building the map is part of building a run.
What is Volatiles?
Volatiles is described as an action game built around roguelike runs. Its story begins in a strange facility: the protagonist has little memory of how they arrived, and scientists who say they are helping repeatedly place them in a sensory-deprivation tank to fight monsters in their mind.

A run starts on a single tile with an enemy wave. After defeating the wave, the player can place another tile next to the first. That addition expands the arena, brings another wave, and can change or strengthen the character. Some tiles may provide weapons or improve particular stats.

This makes each placement do two jobs: it develops the run’s character while determining the terrain on which later fights take place. The map is built during the run, not simply selected as a finished arena before combat begins.
Why the layout changes combat
Tile placement is a tactical choice as well as a progression choice. A winding maze may create useful routes or opportunities to manage enemies, but it can also leave the player trapped. A more open arrangement may provide room to move while offering too little cover or too few escape routes.
Reported choices include moving toward a point of interest, taking healing, or selecting an ability that makes bullets bounce off walls. The article also names autonomous turrets and exploding barrels as environmental features players may prioritize. These are examples described in the report, not independently verified performance findings.

A weapon or stat improvement can matter in the next wave, while the corridors and open spaces around it determine how that wave can be fought.

What inspired Volatiles’ map-building mechanic?
Game director Ian Dovhan says the original tile-placement idea came to him while playing Dorfromantik around March 2023. “The inspiration for the map building originally came from playing Dorfromantik,” he said. Dovhan also said the team had not heard of Blue Prince at that point.
The Rock Paper Shotgun article compares the gradual revelation of spaces to Betrayal at House on the Hill, Blue Prince, and Into The Restless Ruins. That is a comparison of how spaces are revealed, not a claim that those games supplied the original inspiration. The distinction matters: Dovhan names Dorfromantik as the starting point, while the board-game comparison helps describe the experience of expanding a map tile by tile.

How the board-game comparison fits
Betrayal at House on the Hill is a useful analogy for progressively revealing a space as new tiles are added. But Volatiles places that idea inside a solo action-survival run: tile placement affects character development and the terrain for incoming combat. The report does not provide a detailed rules comparison, and it does not suggest that playing the board game is required.
Fritz Copes, the game’s lead software engineer, captures the layout risk this way: “You can decide to make a labyrinthine hellscape, at the risk of trapping yourself.” Dovhan described the central pitch as: “What if you had an action-survivor-like game where you built the map yourself?”

The map as a record of the run
The article interprets the expanding map as a visual reflection of the protagonist’s character sheet: the spaces the player adds can express the run’s developing strengths and weaknesses. That is the article’s reading of the mechanic, not a confirmed statement of narrative intent from the developers.
