Use Windows voice typing to dictate into a focused text field. Choose Voice Access when you want to navigate Windows or interact with apps by voice as well as dictate and edit text. Voice typing needs an internet connection while you use it; Voice Access needs internet for initial setup and language downloads, then can work offline.

Microsoft describes Voice Access as both commanding and dictation, while voice typing is for authoring text. There is no official comparative accuracy or speed figure established for the two features, so choose by the task rather than assuming one is universally faster or more accurate. Choose voice typing for a quick dictation
If you are writing a message, note, or document and can put the cursor where the words should go, voice typing is the simpler option. Press Windows+H or tap the touch keyboard’s microphone button. Wait for the listening indicator before speaking. It starts listening when launched, but it needs a text box to receive the words.

Voice Access is the better fit when you want to do more than enter text—for example, interact with app controls, use mouse or keyboard commands, navigate the PC, and edit text. Its default mode combines commands and dictation; it also offers commands-only and dictation-only modes. Microsoft documents commands for managing the microphone, working with apps and controls, using overlays, mouse and keyboard actions, and navigating, selecting, editing, and formatting text. Setup, Windows version, and connection requirements
Voice Access
Voice Access requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or later. An internet connection is needed during initial setup to download the selected language files. Once setup is complete, Microsoft says its on-device speech recognition can control the PC and author text without an internet connection. Start it through Accessibility settings or Windows search; the Voice Access setup instructions cover the process.
Windows voice typing
Voice typing is listed for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its basic requirements are an internet connection, a working microphone, and a cursor in a text box. On Windows 11 it uses online speech recognition powered by Azure Speech services. Check language support before relying on either feature
Voice Access setup lists specific variants: English (US, UK, India, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia); Spanish (Spain and Mexico); German (Germany); French (France and Canada); Simplified Chinese (China); Traditional Chinese (Taiwan); Japanese; and Italian. That does not mean every dialect or locale is supported. Confirm the exact option on Microsoft’s setup page.

Privacy: offline recognition is different from optional voice-clip sharing
Microsoft distinguishes device-based speech recognition, which processes speech locally and sends no voice data to Microsoft, from online recognition, which sends voice data to Microsoft to provide the service and create transcriptions. Voice Access downloads language files for on-device recognition; voice typing uses online recognition.
For voice typing, contributing voice clips is a separate, optional setting. Using online voice typing does not mean you have opted in to share clips for that contribution program. Microsoft says work or school account users cannot share voice data through that setting, but can still use voice typing. Details are in Microsoft’s privacy documentation.

If speech is not being recognized well
First check that Windows is using the intended microphone and that its input level is adequate. A quieter location can also help. If the built-in microphone is not capturing speech well, Microsoft suggests trying a headset or external microphone. A USB headset with a microphone is one optional troubleshooting choice, not a requirement for either feature. Follow Microsoft’s voice typing troubleshooting steps.
Voice Access also provides listening, sleep, and microphone-off states, with on-screen feedback indicating whether speech is being processed or a command has executed. Its getting-started guide explains the interface and how to begin using it.
