1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor current vSphere host lifecycle management, use vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) Images to declare and enforce a desired ESXi host image. Images are Broadcom’s forward path, especially for vSphere 9. Baseline-based patching remains relevant only where an older, supported vSphere release still exposes that capability or while an organization is migrating.
The choice is not simply between two buttons named “patch.” Images describe the state a host should reach; baselines group update content and compare hosts with that content. Both can stage compliance and remediation, but they require different planning for hardware, content sources, maintenance windows and recovery.

The current vSphere patching recommendation
vSphere Lifecycle Manager was introduced with vSphere 7.0. Broadcom deprecated baseline-based patching in vSphere 8.0 and stated that baseline functionality would remain during the vSphere 8 transition but be removed in the next major release. Current vSphere 9 guidance says major baseline functionality is removed and directs customers to vLCM Images for ESXi lifecycle operations.
Broadcom’s support guidance puts the transition plainly: “Customers should transition from using vSphere Lifecycle Manager Baselines (VUM), to instead using vSphere Lifecycle Manager Images (vLCM) for managing the lifecycle of ESX hosts.” That does not mean every existing vSphere 7 or 8 cluster must be converted immediately. It means the installed release and support status should determine the method, not habit or the old VMware Update Manager name.

What vLCM Images automate
Declaring a desired host state
An image defines the target software state for an ESXi host or cluster. The documented composition includes an ESXi base version, optional vendor add-ons or components, and optional firmware and driver integration when the server vendor is supported. Instead of selecting individual bulletins host by host, the administrator maintains one declared target and evaluates hosts against it.
Detecting drift and remediating it
vLCM compares each managed host with the desired image. If a host has drifted, the system identifies the mismatch and can remediate the host toward compliance. VMware’s conceptual documentation describes the result this way: “When a host drifts from the desired state, the host is remediated to be compliant to the desired state.” Drift can arise after an emergency change, an unsupported manual installation or another configuration event; the image model makes the target explicit.
Coordinating supported firmware and drivers
Where the required vendor integration exists, an image can coordinate firmware and driver versions with the ESXi release. This is a full-stack lifecycle capability, not a guarantee that every server, adapter or storage controller is covered. Confirm the server vendor’s support matrix, the exact hardware model and the integration available for your vSphere release before adding firmware to an image.

Grouping update content
Baselines group patches, extensions or upgrades and associate those groups with hosts. vLCM then compares the associated hosts with the selected content and reports compliance. This is the workflow historically associated with VMware Update Manager (VUM).

Staging and remediation
Administrators can stage content, review which hosts are non-compliant and initiate remediation according to the release’s controls. A compliance result is not the same as an automatic patch operation: the administrator still schedules or starts remediation and must account for host evacuation, maintenance mode, workload placement and cluster capacity.
Where baselines still fit
Use baselines only when the installed vCenter and ESXi versions still support the required baseline functions, or as an interim method during a controlled migration. Do not select baselines as the long-term design for a new vSphere 9 deployment. Broadcom’s vSphere 9 direction is image-based lifecycle management.
Images versus baselines at a glance
| Method | What it automates | Best fit | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| vLCM Images | Declares an ESXi version and selected add-ons or components; can coordinate supported firmware and drivers; checks drift and remediates hosts toward the desired image. | Forward host-lifecycle management, particularly vSphere 9 and clusters that can maintain a consistent declared state. | Verify release, image compatibility, vendor support, host configuration and remediation prerequisites. Historical image guidance required ESXi 7.0 or later, consistent hardware vendors and non-stateless hosts; treat those statements as version-specific and confirm current interoperability documentation. |
| vLCM Baselines | Groups patch, extension or upgrade content, associates it with hosts, checks compliance and runs administrator-initiated remediation. | Supported older releases or a temporary migration phase. | Baseline patching was deprecated in vSphere 8 and major functionality is removed in vSphere 9. It is not the strategic route for new vSphere 9 host management. |
| Manual or offline vLCM content | Imports supported update content and applies an image or update workflow without depending on the normal online download path for every operation. | Restricted or disconnected environments that can transfer approved content through a controlled process. | Steps vary by release and content type. Use the Broadcom procedure for the installed version rather than copying online-depot instructions. |
Choose by vSphere release and operating model
vSphere 9
Plan around vLCM Images. Confirm that the cluster’s hardware and host configuration can be represented by the selected image, then validate add-ons, drivers and any firmware integration. If an existing environment depended on baselines, treat conversion as a lifecycle project rather than assuming the old associations will continue to work.

vSphere 8
Baseline capability may still be present during the transition, but Broadcom deprecated the model. New design work should use Images where supported, while an existing baseline workflow can be retained temporarily if upgrading immediately is not practical. Document the migration point so a future vSphere 9 upgrade does not leave hosts without a supported lifecycle method.

vSphere 7 and earlier supported environments
Images were introduced with vSphere 7.0, and baselines may remain the established method in older supported installations. Check the exact vCenter and ESXi build, because available controls and compatibility rules are release-dependent. Do not infer current support from a screen that happens to display a baseline.
Online versus restricted networks
An online design is appropriate when vLCM can reach the configured Broadcom depot and authenticate successfully. A restricted or disconnected design requires an approved manual or offline content process. These are still vLCM workflows, but the import and validation sequence is release-specific.
Prerequisites before you patch
- Identify the exact release: record vCenter, ESXi and relevant build versions. Baseline availability and image behavior change across vSphere 7, 8 and 9.
- Check interoperability: verify ESXi, server model, storage and network adapters, vendor add-ons, drivers and firmware against current Broadcom and hardware-vendor compatibility guidance.
- Understand host state: historical VMware image guidance included ESXi 7.0 or later, same-vendor hosts (ideally the same make and model) and non-stateless hosts. These are not universal guarantees for every current release, so validate your configuration.
- Plan capacity and workload movement: determine whether the cluster can evacuate a host, enter maintenance mode and recover if remediation fails. The tool does not eliminate change-management or availability planning.
- Prepare recovery: confirm configuration backups, rollback options supported by your release and a tested escalation path before changing a production host.
- Prepare content access: choose the online depot or an offline transfer process and test it before the maintenance window.
A practical image-based patching sequence
- Inventory the environment. Record the vCenter version, ESXi builds, cluster membership, hardware vendors and any hosts with special drivers or firmware. Separate hosts that cannot share the proposed image.
- Review the release guidance. Read the current lifecycle and interoperability documentation for that exact vSphere release. Do not apply a vSphere 9 image procedure to a vSphere 7 or 8 installation without checking the differences.
- Compose the desired image. Select the ESXi base version and only the vendor add-ons, components, drivers and firmware integrations that are supported for the target hardware. Keep the image minimal; every additional component creates another compatibility dependency.
- Configure content retrieval. For online operation, configure the current Broadcom depot source and customer-specific authentication. For an isolated environment, obtain the approved offline package and follow the release-specific import procedure.
- Run a compliance or pre-check evaluation. Review image validation results, hardware warnings, missing components and any host that cannot be remediated safely. Resolve incompatibilities before scheduling a change.
- Stage and schedule remediation. Select an appropriate maintenance window, confirm workload placement and cluster capacity, then stage or remediate according to the controls exposed by your vCenter release. Do not assume staging has already changed the running ESXi image.
- Verify after remediation. Confirm the host reports the intended image, reconnects to vCenter, presents expected storage and networking, and returns to the cluster’s desired state. Check application health before proceeding to the next host.
Depot access and authentication changes
Content retrieval is an operational prerequisite, not a minor setup detail. Broadcom support article 420443 was updated September 23, 2026 and states that default depot URLs changed to dl.broadcom.com. It also specifies unique customer-specific token URLs for authentication.
Recommended Free Tools
Obtain the token through Broadcom Support and update the vLCM patch-setup source with the value intended for your customer account. The token and source configuration are customer-specific and operationally volatile, so use the current support article for the exact setup rather than copying a generic URL from an old runbook.

If downloads fail
- Check that the configured source uses the current depot address, not a retired default.
- Confirm that the token is valid for the customer account and has not expired or been revoked.
- Verify DNS, proxy, firewall and outbound TLS inspection rules from the vCenter appliance’s network path.
- Refresh depot metadata and rerun the image or baseline pre-check after correcting the source.
- If the network cannot reach the depot by design, stop retrying the online workflow and move to the documented offline process for the installed release.
Manual and offline patching
Broadcom documents manual or offline ESXi upgrades using vLCM. The approach is useful for disconnected networks, but it is not one universal recipe: the required package, import location, validation step and image procedure depend on the vSphere release and content type.
Maintain chain of custody for transferred packages, verify their integrity using the release documentation, and import only content approved for the target hardware. After import, use the same image validation, capacity planning, remediation and post-change verification as an online deployment. Offline access changes how content arrives; it does not remove compatibility or recovery obligations.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating a baseline as a desired image
A baseline is a collection of update content associated with hosts. An image is a declared target composition. Migrating from one to the other requires mapping the intended ESXi version and vendor components, not merely attaching the old baseline to a new cluster.
Assuming compliance means “already patched”
Compliance assessment reports a comparison. Remediation is a separate administrator-controlled operation that may require evacuation and a maintenance window.
Best Value
Including unsupported firmware or drivers
Adding a component because it is newer can make an otherwise valid ESXi image unusable on a particular adapter or server. Confirm vendor integration and hardware support for the exact release.
Expecting zero downtime
The available material does not establish that every patch can be applied without workload impact. Some clusters can evacuate hosts with little user-visible disruption; others cannot. Treat availability as an environment-specific design question.
Using stale depot instructions
Depot URLs and authentication requirements can change. A runbook that worked before September 23, 2026 may fail after Broadcom’s source and token changes. Revalidate the source before each major lifecycle project.
Bottom line
Use vLCM Images as the strategic method for ESXi lifecycle management, with vSphere 9 as the clearest case. Keep baselines only where a supported older release still requires them or during a documented migration. In either model, successful patching depends on release-aware compatibility checks, supported image or content composition, working depot authentication or an approved offline process, and a remediation plan that protects workloads and provides a recovery path.
