VLC can play live TV streams when you give it a compatible stream or M3U playlist link. One public option is IPTV-org’s collection of channel links: open the playlist in VLC, then choose an entry from the playlist panel. The collection is described as containing thousands of channels, but that is a changing, unverified total—not a promise that every channel works or is available in your country.
What VLC’s “hidden” feature actually does
VLC does not include a built-in TV channel directory. Its Open Network Stream feature accepts supported network stream URLs and playlists, including M3U playlists. The channels come from the linked playlist, not from VLC.

IPTV-org describes its repository as a “Collection of publicly available IPTV (Internet Protocol television) channels from all over the world.” Its main playlist is an index of links to third-party streams. PCWorld reported “thousands” of channels across categories on September 16, 2026, but the repository README does not give a dated channel count. Entries change, so there is no stable exact total established by these sources. PCWorld’s report and the IPTV-org repository describe the collection.
How to watch an IPTV playlist in desktop VLC

Open VLC on Windows or Linux. Choose Media > Open Network Stream, or press Ctrl+N.

Paste the IPTV-org main playlist URL into the network address field:
https://iptv-org.github.io/iptv/index.m3u. -
Choose Play (the repository describes the generic action as Open). VLC will attempt to load the playlist; how long that takes and which entries are usable can vary.

VLC’s user documentation covers the player, while IPTV-org’s README explains that a playlist link can be pasted into a video player that supports live streaming. That describes a general capability, not a guarantee that every playlist entry will work with every VLC release or platform.

Choosing a narrower playlist
The main playlist is broad, which can make a particular country, language, or category harder to browse. IPTV-org links to additional, more focused playlists in its repository. Open the repository’s playlist directory, choose a relevant list, and use its M3U URL in VLC with the same network-stream workflow. A filtered list can make browsing more manageable, but it does not ensure that a listed stream is online or accessible in your region.
Why a channel may not play
A failed entry does not automatically mean VLC was configured incorrectly. PCWorld warns that streams may go offline, move to a new address, or be geographically restricted; IPTV-org also says it cannot control the linked destinations.

Only one entry fails: The individual stream may be unavailable or its address may have changed. Try another playlist entry.

Several entries fail: Check that the M3U URL was pasted correctly and that the device has an internet connection. The sources do not establish a single cause or fix for every playback failure.

A channel works elsewhere but not where you are: Regional restrictions may affect availability. VLC cannot remove a restriction imposed by the stream provider.
Free to use does not mean rights are guaranteed
VLC is free and open-source software, and the playlist method needs a stream or playlist link rather than a specific paid service or accessory. But public access to a link is not proof that every stream is authorized for every viewer or territory.
IPTV-org says submitted links are, “to the best of our knowledge,” intentionally made public by copyright holders. That is the maintainers’ description, not an independent verification or warranty for each destination. The project says it has no control over linked sites and provides a route for rights holders to request removal. VideoLAN says users may use its software “within the boundary of law”; its legal page primarily concerns French law, so it is not legal advice about a particular stream in another country.
