VLC’s desktop shortcuts let you control playback, seeking, display, and volume from the keyboard. Start with the reference below, but treat it as a baseline: your operating system, VLC build, keyboard layout, and any customized bindings can change what works. To see the shortcuts in your installation, open Preferences → Hotkeys. VLC’s hotkey documentation lists the common defaults and notes that global hotkeys can work while VLC is not the focused window.
Playback and navigation
These common desktop defaults are listed in VLC’s hotkey documentation. Playback-rate symbols may vary with keyboard layout, and the documentation does not establish one universal seek duration for every build.

VLC’s documentation also describes global hotkeys, which can remain active when VLC does not have focus. A shortcut that works in the player window may therefore behave differently from a configured global binding.

If a key does not produce the expected result, use the menu command or inspect the binding in Preferences → Hotkeys; the active configuration is more reliable than a generic shortcut list.

Sound and synchronization

These are common documented bindings, not a guarantee that every operating system or customized installation uses the same keys.
Audio delay
Do not assume a universal audio-delay shortcut. A Windows FAQ mirror documents J and K for changing delay in 50 ms increments, but that evidence is Windows-specific and dated; other references describe different or potentially version-dependent bindings. Check the installed player at Preferences → Hotkeys and find the audio-delay actions before relying on a key. If you are troubleshooting a lip-sync mismatch, adjust the delay in small increments and verify whether audio needs to move earlier or later relative to the video.

Take a snapshot
VideoLAN’s FAQ lists Ctrl+Alt+S for Windows, Linux, and Unix, and Command+Alt+S for Mac OS X. The FAQ also offers the menu route Video → Snapshot. If the shortcut is not configured or does nothing, inspect the Hotkeys settings; the FAQ notes that Advanced options may be needed to set the snapshot action. To choose where captures are saved, use Preferences → Video. VideoLAN’s FAQ documents these snapshot controls.
Find, verify, or change a shortcut
- Open VLC Preferences and select Interface → Hotkeys. The labels may vary slightly between builds.
- Locate the action you want and check its assigned key in the Hotkeys panel. Use that panel as the authority for your installation when a published list conflicts.
- To customize a binding, select its action and assign a key using the controls shown in your version of VLC. Avoid assigning the same key to conflicting actions.
- If the key still does not work, confirm VLC is receiving keyboard input, check whether another application or a global hotkey is involved, and verify that the intended media or playlist item is active.
