For VLC Desktop 3.0, five handy default shortcuts are Space to play or pause, F for fullscreen, M to mute, and Shift+Left or Shift+Right to jump backward or forward. These are documented desktop defaults, not guaranteed bindings for every platform, version, or customized setup.
What are the five VLC keyboard shortcuts?
VideoLAN’s VLC Desktop 3.0 hotkey reference lists these controls:

| Space | Play or pause | Toggle playback without reaching for the on-screen controls. |
| F | Enter fullscreen | Expand the video to fill the screen. |
| M | Mute or unmute | Toggle audio off or back on. |
| Shift+Left | Jump backward | Go back in the current media. |
| Shift+Right | Jump forward | Move ahead in the current media. |
The reference labels the last two actions as “Jump backward” and “Jump forward”; it does not specify a time interval in the shortcut list. These five are useful examples, not a claim that VideoLAN identifies them as its five most essential shortcuts.

Press Space to toggle play and pause. Use Shift+Left to jump backward or Shift+Right to jump forward. The hotkey documentation says VLC shortcuts can be used even when VLC does not have focus; if a key does not work as expected, verify the binding in your installation.

How do you make VLC fullscreen—and exit?
Press F to enter fullscreen. Press Esc to leave it. VideoLAN’s desktop video guide also documents a mouse fallback: right-click the video and choose Leave Full Screen.
What if a shortcut behaves differently?
The documented list is for VLC Desktop 3.0, and your installed settings may differ because of version, operating system, or custom bindings. VideoLAN’s Preferences documentation identifies a Hotkeys section for keyboard shortcuts. Preferences can be viewed in simple or advanced form; check the Hotkeys section in your own installation to see or change the assigned keys.

Do these shortcuts work in VLC for Android or iOS?
This list covers VLC Desktop, not mobile controls. VideoLAN’s Android guide describes screen gestures for seeking and adjusting volume or brightness, while its iOS playback guide documents touch gestures. Those mobile instructions do not establish that the desktop keyboard defaults apply on a phone or tablet.

The same VLC Desktop 3.0 reference also lists S to stop, + to play faster, - to play slower, = for normal rate, N for next, P for previous, and Ctrl+Up or Ctrl+Down to adjust volume.
