Vivaldi has grown into a serious iPhone and iPad browser, with unusually capable tab organization, built-in tracker and ad blocking, cross-device sync, and a customizable interface. It is a compelling choice for power users and people already using Vivaldi elsewhere—but not an automatic upgrade from Safari. Apple integration, simplicity, migration friction, and the limits of mobile browsing still matter.
As of August 18, 2026, Vivaldi’s release index lists version 8.1 for mobile. The browser is free, supports iPhone and iPad, and requires iOS 17 or later. Vivaldi release index · current iOS requirements
What Vivaldi for iOS is designed to do
Vivaldi is aimed at people who want more control over browsing than a minimal mobile interface usually provides. Its iOS app brings together tabs, bookmarks and Speed Dials, Notes, a Reading List, privacy controls, and optional encrypted sync with Vivaldi on other devices. The browser’s features are available without a premium paywall; sync, however, requires a Vivaldi Account. Vivaldi for iOS
The app first launched on September 28, 2023, with desktop-style tabs, Panels, Notes, Reading List, private tabs, blocking, and encrypted sync. Subsequent releases expanded the mobile toolset: Vivaldi 7.4 added or emphasized pinning, tab stacks, background audio, and additional history controls in May 2025; Vivaldi 7.9 added two-level tab stacks and Safari import in March 2026. Its desktop influence is a design philosophy, not a promise of full feature parity. Vivaldi on iOS remains a separate mobile implementation shaped by Apple’s platform rules and the limits of a touchscreen. An early independent review documented shortcomings compared with desktop Vivaldi; it predates the later additions, so it is useful context rather than a description of every current feature. Why its tab system is the main attraction
Vivaldi gives tabs a more prominent, desktop-like role than a simple grid of open pages. If you routinely keep many pages open, grouping and pinning can make it easier to find the one you need instead of scanning an ever-growing collection.
Stacks, two-level stacks, and pinned tabs
- Tab stacks group related tabs, such as product comparisons, trip plans, or research for a project.
- Two-level tab stacks show the groups in one row and the tabs inside the selected group in another. Vivaldi says this reduces the need to scroll through a long, single row of tabs. Vivaldi 7.9 for Mobile
- Pinned tabs keep important pages persistently available. Pinning and tab-stack improvements arrived in the 7.4 update. Vivaldi 7.4 for iOS
- Synced tabs let you access open tabs from other Vivaldi installations when sync is configured. That is a cross-device feature, not another kind of tab group. Vivaldi sync guide
This organization is most useful for tab-heavy work: comparing purchases, planning travel, studying, or switching among work topics. If you usually have only a few pages open, Vivaldi’s additional controls may add clutter without solving a real problem.
What sync includes—and what it does not
Vivaldi sync is useful when you move between an iPhone or iPad and Vivaldi on another supported platform. Vivaldi lists these sync categories:

To set it up on iOS, open the Vivaldi menu, go to Settings > Sync > Log in, sign in to a Vivaldi Account, and enter an encryption password. You can then choose to sync all available data or selected categories. Keep that password somewhere secure: it is part of the encryption design, and you should not assume Vivaldi can recover encrypted browser data if you lose it. Vivaldi’s iOS sync instructions
Vivaldi says synced browser data is end-to-end encrypted and stored on its servers in Iceland. Its policy describes encrypting individual data entries before they are sent, while retaining some operational metadata to run the service. That is a more precise description than saying the company receives no sync-related information. Sync is also not a backup service; keep independent copies of information you cannot afford to lose. Privacy features are useful, but they are not anonymity
Vivaldi offers several different controls that are easy to blur together under the word “privacy.” Tracker blocking, ad blocking, private tabs, HTTPS preference, and encrypted sync address different things; none makes ordinary browsing anonymous.
Trackers, ads, and site-specific controls
The built-in blocker can be set to block no content, trackers only, or trackers and ads, and its level can be adjusted for individual sites. It uses filter lists, including EasyList and optional local lists. Blocking is off by default during installation choices unless you select a blocking level, and you can change it later. Because lists can miss new techniques and sites can change how ads are delivered, it is a useful first line of defense—not a guarantee that every ad or tracker will be stopped. There is a practical trade-off: blocking can interfere with a site. If a page fails, use the current site’s shield or blocking control to reduce the level for that site, reload, and disable blocking there only if needed. Re-enable it after finishing if you want the protection back. UI labels can change between releases, so check the control shown in your installed version.
In June 2026, an independent report described a Vivaldi iOS YouTube ad-blocking problem and said a snapshot build reportedly fixed it. That establishes a reported issue and a test-build fix, not that the stable release listed in August 2026 still had the problem. It does illustrate why claims about blocking a particular site should be treated as version-dependent. PiunikaWeb’s June 2026 report
Private tabs, HTTPS preference, and preloading
Private tabs can keep a browsing session separate from ordinary browsing history on the device, but they do not conceal activity from websites, internet providers, employers, schools, or network administrators. Vivaldi also offers options to lock private tabs when leaving the app and to ask whether links from other apps should open in a private tab.
“Always Use Secure Connections” prefers HTTPS where available; it is not a VPN. Vivaldi’s privacy settings also let you control preloading. Preloading can make a page feel faster but may trigger network requests before you explicitly open it. Vivaldi says preloading is enabled by default on Wi-Fi and can be turned off. The settings include browsing-data deletion controls and an option to prevent links from opening in external apps. That last control can keep pages in Vivaldi, but may frustrate you when a site works better in its own app. Vivaldi iOS privacy and security settings

If you require aggressive, specialized filtering, compare Vivaldi with dedicated content blockers and test your essential sites. A browser-level blocker is convenient, but its results depend on lists, site behavior, and app version.
Customization and the iPad workflow
Vivaldi offers broader interface control than users may expect from an iOS browser, though it does not reproduce the full depth of desktop customization. Available options include light and dark themes, Start Page wallpapers, a custom app icon, address- and tab-bar placement, tab-stack presentation, search-engine choice and nicknames, Speed Dials and folders, website dark mode, and the keyboard accessory toolbar. Vivaldi iOS settings reference
The supporting tools work best as one browsing workflow rather than a list of extras. Save a page to the Reading List when you want to read it later; capture an idea in Notes while researching; use Speed Dials and folders for frequently visited sites; and send a tab to another Vivaldi device when you want to continue there. On iPad, the larger-screen layout includes a sidebar for items such as bookmarks, history, reading list, and notes, making those tools easier to reach alongside a page.

Import Safari data
Safari migration is possible, but it takes an export-and-import step rather than a one-tap transfer. Vivaldi’s documented process is:
- Open Vivaldi and go to Settings > Safari import > Go to Safari Settings.
- In Safari settings, export history and website data to Files.
- Return to Vivaldi and choose Settings > Safari import > I’ve exported my data.
- Select the exported file and tap Import. Delete the exported file from Files afterward if you no longer need it.
Vivaldi’s documentation says direct import from other iOS browsers is unavailable. If you are moving from another browser, you may need to import through its desktop version or use sync as an intermediary. Safari import instructions
Choose a few settings before adding everything else
- Set the search engine you want and, if useful, add search nicknames.
- Choose tracker-only or tracker-and-ad blocking, then adjust per site when something breaks.
- Pick a tab-bar position and decide whether tab stacks suit how you browse.
- Turn off preloading if you prefer to avoid early network requests or reduce data use.
- Enable sync only if you want cross-device continuity, and store its encryption password securely.
- Decide whether background audio and external-app link handling fit your routine.
Performance should not be inferred from the feature list. It can vary with device, iOS version, page, open tabs, blocking configuration, and preloading. No controlled comparative benchmark is established here.

| If you prioritize | Start with |
|---|---|
| Apple ecosystem integration and simplicity | Safari |
| Tab organization, customization, and integrated notes | Vivaldi |
| A privacy-oriented browser with less interface tuning | Brave or DuckDuckGo |
| Mozilla’s browser ecosystem and Firefox familiarity | Firefox |
| Safari plus specialized filtering | Safari with a dedicated content blocker |
Safari is the more natural fit if you depend on Apple-specific workflows or want a browser that closely follows system conventions. Brave may suit people who want a competing built-in blocking approach; DuckDuckGo may suit those who prefer a simpler privacy-focused experience; Firefox may appeal to people already invested in Mozilla’s ecosystem. Each alternative’s iOS capabilities differ, so the table is a starting point, not a claim that one is universally better.
Who should choose Vivaldi?
- Strong fit: Vivaldi desktop users who want sync, researchers and planners with many open tabs, and people who value built-in organization and interface choices.
- Potential fit: Privacy-conscious users who want browser-level tracker and ad controls and are willing to check important sites for breakage.
- Less suitable: People who depend on Safari-specific features, extensions or Apple integration, prefer minimal setup, or need highly specialized ad filtering.
Vivaldi’s core case is not that every iPhone owner needs more browser controls. It is that people who organize their browsing around tabs, saved material, and cross-device continuity can get those tools in one app. If those are not your priorities, its extra interface and setup may feel like overhead rather than an upgrade.
