The most recognizable arrivals included 🖕, 🌮, 🌯, 🌭, 🧀, 🍿, 🦄, 🤔 and 🙄. The figures describe different ways of counting—not 184 entirely unrelated designs. Apple’s iOS 9.1 release notes and Emojipedia’s changelog document the release and its additions.
What iOS 9.1 added
Released in October 2015, iOS 9.1 added support for emoji from Unicode 7.0 and Unicode 8.0. This was much broader than iOS 9.0’s comparatively limited emoji changes. It brought many familiar faces, foods, animals, sports, places and symbols to Apple devices. Some entries were newly approved Unicode emoji; others were older Unicode characters that Apple newly displayed as emoji or made available on its keyboard.
Apple’s release notes say “over 150 new emoji characters.” Emojipedia’s more granular inventory counts 184 additions in the iOS 9.1 implementation. That larger total includes more than wholly new base designs: depending on the counting method, it can include characters newly given emoji presentation, newly keyboard-accessible entries, joined sequences and skin-tone variants. It should not be read as 184 entirely unrelated Unicode characters. For background on the Unicode releases, see Emojipedia’s Unicode 8.0 overview.
How to read the lists
- Unicode addition: A character approved in Unicode 7.0 or 8.0, such as 🌮 Taco or 🤗 Hugging Face.
- New Apple emoji presentation: A character that already existed in Unicode but gained an emoji-style rendering on Apple devices.
- Newly visible keyboard entry: A supported character that Apple made easier to find and use, such as 🖖 Vulcan Salute.
- Sequence or variant: A joined combination such as 👁🗨 Eye in Speech Bubble, or a skin-tone version of an applicable people emoji.

The middle-finger emoji was an important Apple keyboard arrival, but it was not newly approved by Unicode in iOS 9.1: the character had already been approved in Unicode 7.0. Likewise, the release’s broad set of additions was not limited to newly invented emoji.

Eye in Speech Bubble

| Release | Emoji change |
|---|---|
| iOS 9.0 | Added 44 country and region flags and improved access to supported flags, according to Emojipedia’s iOS 9.0 changelog. |
| iOS 9.1 | Added the much larger Unicode 7.0 and 8.0 emoji expansion, including foods, faces, activities, places and symbols. |
For the taco, middle finger, burrito, unicorn and most of the items in this list, the relevant Apple release is iOS 9.1—not iOS 9.0.
New characters, new presentation and keyboard changes
The phrase “new emoji” can refer to different changes in a platform release. In iOS 9.1, Unicode 8 additions such as Taco were genuinely new encoded emoji, while some older characters were newly rendered in emoji style by Apple. The middle-finger character had Unicode 7 approval before iOS 9.1 but became available on Apple’s emoji keyboard with this update. Vulcan Salute was already supported and became easier to access because Apple exposed it in the keyboard.
Apple’s Eye in Speech Bubble was a platform-specific joined sequence, rather than a new single character. The Snowman and symbols with emoji-style presentation also illustrate why a platform’s visible keyboard additions are not identical to a list of newly approved Unicode characters. The iOS 9.1 implementation also changed artwork for the iMac and MacBook emoji; artwork is vendor-specific, so Apple’s version is not a universal design.
Using the emoji keyboard on an iOS 9-era device
These are period-specific iOS 9 instructions, not a guarantee that current iOS menus use the same labels.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard.
- Select Emoji.
- In a text field, tap the globe or emoji key to switch to the emoji keyboard.
Why some emoji may not display for everyone
Emoji rendering depends on the recipient’s platform and software. A device that does not support a character or sequence may show a missing-glyph box, an empty box or a replacement symbol instead. Emojipedia warned about missing-character placeholders when iOS 9.1 users messaged people on systems that had not implemented the additions. Even when both devices support an emoji, its artwork can look different from Apple’s version.
