Vitest 4 made Browser Mode stable and added screenshot comparison; Vitest 5 brings important runtime prerequisites and behavior changes. These are shipped capabilities—not a forecast for all testing or a promise that Vitest will replace every layer of a test suite.
What has changed in Vitest?
The clearest shift is toward a test runner that fits more closely into the application’s development pipeline while covering more than module-level checks. Vitest reuses Vite configuration, transforms, resolvers, and plugins. In watch mode, it uses the module graph to rerun related tests; in CI, it runs in run mode when process.env.CI is present. See the Vitest feature overview.

Vitest 4, announced by the Vitest Team on October 22, 2025, made Browser Mode stable and added browser-based screenshot comparison and Playwright trace support. The announcement credits more than 640 contributors to Vitest Core and contributors to integrations, tools, and translations; that is a project contribution figure, not a measure of adoption or usage. How do Vitest’s testing modes differ?
Choose the environment according to what the test needs to prove. These modes complement one another rather than forming a single replacement ladder.
#1 Best Overall
| Mode or environment | What it is useful for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Node | Testing module logic and behavior that does not need browser APIs. | It does not provide a real browser environment. |
| Simulated DOM, such as happy-dom or jsdom | Testing code that expects DOM APIs without launching a real browser. | A simulated environment is not equivalent to browser-native behavior. |
| Browser Mode | Testing components and UI in a browser, including screenshot comparisons. | Requires a configured provider and browser/CI setup; it is not by itself a substitute for end-to-end coverage of user flows. |
Browser Mode exposes browser globals such as window and document and uses Vite’s dev server. Its browser compatibility depends on the configured esbuild.target; the guide lists defaults of Chrome 87 or later, Firefox 79 or later, Safari 15.4 or later, and Edge 88 or later. Check the current Browser Mode guide against the browsers your project supports.
What does Browser Mode add?
Provider-based browser execution
Browser Mode needs a provider package. Vitest’s guide lists preview, Playwright, and WebdriverIO providers. Preview simulates events; the guide recommends Playwright or WebdriverIO for CI and also recommends them for local testing. Select based on browser coverage, event fidelity, and how the provider fits your CI environment—not simply because Browser Mode is stable.
Screenshot comparisons and traces
Vitest 4 added the toMatchScreenshot assertion to capture a UI screenshot and compare it with a reference image. It also added Playwright trace support. These capabilities can help identify visual changes and investigate browser-test failures, but they do not establish that every UI test should become a screenshot test or that browser component tests cover complete end-to-end journeys.

Vitest 5.0 has explicit runtime requirements: Vite 6.4.0 or later and Node.js 22.12.0 or later. Check the versions actually installed in the project before starting the upgrade. The official Vitest 5.0 migration guide also notes that Yarn users must list Vite explicitly because Vite is a peer dependency and Yarn does not install peer dependencies automatically.
Rank #3
Mock lifecycle and hoisting
Vitest 5 sets clearMocks to true by default. It clears mock call history before each test but leaves mock implementations in place. Tests that rely on call history established in setup code or an earlier test may therefore need changes. Set clearMocks: false only when the suite intentionally needs the previous behavior.
Calls to vi.mock, vi.unmock, and vi.hoisted must be at module top level. For dynamic mocking that should not be hoisted, the migration guide identifies vi.doMock and vi.doUnmock as alternatives.
Rank #4
Benchmarking and other API changes
The benchmarking API changed: bench is now a fixture used from a regular test() context. Older benchmark-specific APIs and configuration options were removed or replaced. The migration guide also covers browser-mode automocking, UI token authentication, artifact-directory changes, and other API and package migrations. Audit the full guide for features your project actually uses rather than assuming the mock changes are the only upgrade concern.
How should a team judge whether Vitest fits?
Evaluate it against the work your tests need to do, not a general claim that one runner is best or universally faster.
Best Value
- Configuration: Does sharing Vite’s config, transforms, resolvers, and plugins simplify the project’s test setup?
- Feedback workflow: Do module-graph-based watch reruns match how the suite is organized and help developers focus on related tests?
- Test environment: Are Node or a simulated DOM enough, or does the team need real-browser component and UI checks?
- CI: Can the project install and run the chosen browser provider and supported browsers in its CI environment?
- Upgrade cost: Can the project meet the Node and Vite prerequisites, and does it depend on mock lifecycle, hoisting, benchmarking, or other APIs affected by migration?
The released features support a more integrated development workflow and broader browser testing. They do not establish universal speed gains; performance depends on the project and suite, so measure feedback time in your own setup. Nor do they show that Vitest replaces end-to-end testing or other tools. The practical direction is a more connected set of testing options, with the environment and test layer chosen to match the behavior being checked.
