There is not enough verified product documentation here to give reliable VisualScraper setting names, defaults, or commands. “VisualScraper” has not been matched to an authoritative product manual or a confirmed version. Do not assume settings documented for another screenshot tool apply to it. To get a sharper retina-ready capture, first find VisualScraper’s own controls for viewport size and device pixel ratio (DPR) or scale factor; treat those separately from image compression quality.
What is known about VisualScraper’s retina settings?
The product identity and current documentation for VisualScraper are unverified. That means no particular menu path, command-line flag, default DPR, or recommended quality value can be responsibly attributed to it. Before changing settings, confirm the vendor and version from the application’s About screen, package details, or official product page, then consult that version’s documentation.

A similarly named or functionally similar screenshot tool is not evidence of VisualScraper’s controls. For example, documentation for the separate shot-scraper tool describes a retina shortcut that uses a scale factor of 2, but those commands and behaviors should not be copied into VisualScraper unless its own documentation confirms them.

Retina density and image quality are different settings
Viewport size sets the page layout
A viewport is the browser’s layout area, usually expressed in CSS pixels. It influences responsive behavior: a page captured at a narrow viewport may use a mobile layout, while a wider viewport may show desktop navigation and different content. Set the viewport to the size where the screenshot will be used before comparing sharpness.

Device pixel ratio sets output pixel density
DPR (also called device scale factor or scale factor) describes the relationship between CSS pixels and captured image pixels. At 2× density, a fixed 400 × 600 CSS-pixel viewport produces an image of 800 × 1,200 pixels: both dimensions double, so the image contains four times as many pixels. A higher-density capture can preserve more detail when displayed at the same CSS size on a high-density screen, but it also produces more pixel data.
Compression quality affects encoding, not density
A lossy-format quality control, such as JPEG quality, trades file size against compression artifacts. It does not by itself make a 1× capture a 2× capture. Raising compression quality cannot substitute for increasing DPR; increasing DPR does not guarantee a particular file size or remove compression artifacts. The resulting size depends on the format, image content, and the tool’s implementation.

How to choose settings once you confirm the product
- Identify the exact app or service. Record its vendor, version, and whether you are using a desktop app, browser tool, command-line utility, or API. Use that product’s current official manual rather than another tool’s examples.
- Find the viewport controls. Look for width and height in CSS pixels, or an equivalent viewport/preset setting. Choose the layout size needed for the destination, then keep it fixed during comparisons.
- Find the density control. Search the manual for “device pixel ratio,” “device scale factor,” “scale factor,” or “retina.” Confirm whether the tool accepts a numeric factor, which values it supports, and whether a convenience preset overrides it.
- Check format and compression separately. Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP only from options the confirmed product actually supports. If it exposes a lossy quality setting, test it independently from DPR.
- Capture at 1× and at the intended higher density. Use the same page, viewport, format, and content state. Compare both images at the same intended display size, not merely at their native pixel dimensions.
- Check output and limits. Verify actual pixel dimensions, file size, capture duration, any documented maximum dimensions or file limits, and whether the tool changes layout or behavior at higher density.
What to compare in a retina capture
- Text and interface detail: inspect small text, icons, thin lines, and edges at the final display size.
- Responsive layout: make sure a higher-density option has not also changed the CSS viewport or selected a different device preset.
- Dimensions and file size: confirm the output dimensions rather than relying only on a “retina” label, and measure the file-size impact for your own page and format.
- Capture time and limits: check the target product’s documentation and your own workflow; the available evidence does not establish VisualScraper-specific performance or limits.
- Image artifacts: if fine detail looks blurred or blocky, test compression quality separately from density.
Common problems and fixes
The image is still blurry
Confirm that the output dimensions are actually higher while the CSS viewport remains unchanged. If dimensions remain at the viewport size, the setting may be a compression or display option rather than DPR. Also inspect the image at its intended display size; enlarging a 1× image in an editor does not restore captured detail.

The file is much larger
A 2× capture has four times the pixel count for the same viewport, though the actual file-size increase depends on content and encoding. If size is the issue, test the product’s documented format and compression controls without lowering density until you have compared the visual result.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return a screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF, with a device scale setting available among its capture options. It does not establish or document VisualScraper’s settings; use it as a separate capture route when you need an API or want an AI agent to capture a page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a retina setting mean the screenshot will be twice as wide and tall?
Only if the product defines that setting as a 2× device scale factor while keeping the CSS viewport fixed. Verify both the control’s meaning and the resulting image dimensions in the specific tool.
Should I use PNG or JPEG for a retina screenshot?
That depends on the image content and whether you need lossless output or smaller files. Test formats supported by the confirmed product against the intended use; no VisualScraper-specific format recommendation is established here.
