A pixel difference is a signal to review—not automatic proof of a defect. For a practical start, use Playwright’s screenshot assertions, keep baseline generation and CI in a consistent environment, and approve baseline updates only after reviewing the diff.
What is visual regression testing?
Visual regression testing checks whether a screen that was previously correct has changed unexpectedly. A typical workflow exercises the UI at selected states, captures screenshots, compares them with stored baselines, and presents differences for review. The reviewer decides whether each change is an intended design update or a regression. Detection and review capabilities vary by tool. Applitools’ overview describes this type of testing as regression testing for screens.
The first run usually establishes reference screenshots. Treat that as a deliberate review event: confirm that the test reached the intended state and that the captured images are suitable references before accepting them. Later runs compare new captures with those references. A changed image alone does not tell you whether to keep or reject the change.
How do I compare screenshots in Playwright?
Playwright Test includes screenshot assertions through toHaveScreenshot(). The first run generates reference images; later runs compare against them. Its visual comparisons documentation explains the assertion, snapshot files, update options, and comparison controls.

1. Capture a meaningful, repeatable state
Write a test that establishes the same data and UI state each run, then assert on the page or a specific component. This example uses a page-level capture; replace the URL and selectors with your application’s stable test route and state setup.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account page matches its approved appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/account');
await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account' }).waitFor();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-page.png', {
fullPage: true,
});
});
Keep test data stable and avoid relying on values that change between runs. Choose checkpoints that protect important components or journey moments instead of snapshotting every screen indiscriminately. Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before saving the final capture, which can help with settling; it does not replace deterministic application setup.
2. Generate and review the initial baseline
Run the test in the environment you intend to use for baseline generation and CI. Review the produced reference image before treating it as accepted. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; it recommends running tests in the same environment as baseline generation.

To intentionally refresh references after reviewing a UI change, use the update flag:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Do not use a bulk baseline update as a way to make unexplained failures disappear. Inspect the changed images, confirm the application behavior, and update only references whose new appearance is intended. If the difference exposes a bug, fix the application and retain the previous baseline.
3. Adjust comparison sensitivity only when needed
Playwright supports options including maxDiffPixels to permit a specified number of differing pixels. Microsoft Learn’s advanced Playwright samples also demonstrate maxDiffPixelRatio and a per-pixel threshold. These controls trade sensitivity for tolerance: larger allowances can prevent insignificant rendering noise from failing a test, but can also let real changes pass. Choose values by examining reviewed diffs for the relevant screen, not by copying a universal threshold.

How do I stop visual tests from failing on dynamic content?
Start by making the state deterministic rather than immediately masking differences. Use stable test data, set the application to a known state, and capture in the same browser and operating-system environment used to establish the baseline. Avoid changing the environment between baseline generation and CI runs when possible.
Wait for the UI you mean to test
Wait for a meaningful application condition, such as a heading or loaded component, rather than taking a screenshot while the page is still in an incidental loading state. Playwright’s screenshot assertion also waits for successive screenshots to match, but that settling behavior cannot stabilize changing server data, rotating content, clocks, or animations by itself.
Mask or hide only irrelevant volatility
If a dynamic region is outside the assertion’s purpose, use Playwright’s supported stylesheet filtering or masking options narrowly. For example, a timestamp may be irrelevant to a layout check, while a changing price or status may be central to the behavior under test. Microsoft Learn’s sample scopes a screenshot to a grid and masks a dynamic timestamp column. Keep volatile content visible when its appearance or value is part of what the test should verify.

Check the capture environment before loosening thresholds
- Confirm that the browser version and host environment match the baseline environment.
- Confirm that test data and application state are repeatable.
- Check whether the difference is confined to genuinely irrelevant content.
- Only then consider a narrowly scoped mask or a reviewed tolerance adjustment.
Which visual testing tool should I choose?
Choose based on your existing framework, where baselines should live, how reviewers approve changes, which browsers or viewports matter, and what your CI and data-handling requirements allow. The available sources do not establish comparable current prices, usage limits, or independent performance benchmarks, so verify those directly before selecting a product.

Common failure causes and fixes
- Many screenshots change after a browser or OS update: check whether the capture environment changed, then regenerate references only after reviewing the expected rendering changes.
- A screenshot captures a loading or transient state: wait for a stable, meaningful application condition and make test data repeatable.
- A timestamp or rotating element creates a diff: determine whether that content is relevant to the assertion; if not, mask or hide only that region.
- Small rendering differences fail every run: first align capture environments and investigate the source of the variation; if remaining differences are acceptable, set a narrowly considered threshold.
- Updating snapshots seems to fix failures but hides a regression: inspect each changed image before accepting it; restore the old reference when the changed result is a defect.
Reliability and maintenance practices
- Keep baseline generation and continuous integration in the same rendering environment.
- Use deliberate checkpoints with deterministic inputs instead of indiscriminate full-site captures.
- Keep masks and thresholds limited to the particular source of irrelevant variation.
- Make baseline changes reviewable alongside the UI change that caused them.
- Revisit coverage when important UI flows, supported browsers, or responsive layouts change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot diff prove that the page is broken?
No. It identifies a visual change; a reviewer must decide whether the change is intended or a defect.
Can a screenshot API replace visual regression testing?
It can provide captures, but you still need an accepted baseline, comparison, and a process to review and approve differences.
