Visual regression testing shows how a rendered page or component differs from an accepted screenshot baseline. The difference is a review signal—not proof of a defect. Inspect it against the intended change, then approve it if it is deliberate or reject it and fix the implementation if it is not.
What approval means in visual regression testing
A visual test captures a UI state and compares the new render with a previously accepted baseline. The comparison identifies changed pixels or regions; a person still needs to determine whether the change is expected. A changed button, for example, may reflect an intentional redesign, while a shifted layout caused by a CSS regression should not be accepted.
Approving an intentional change updates the expectation used in future comparisons. Rejecting an unexpected change keeps the existing baseline and sends the implementation back for correction. Chromatic documents this accept-or-deny flow in its quickstart; its overview explains the snapshot-and-diff model at Visual testing with Chromatic. Percy describes the purpose of visual testing at Visual testing basics.
Build a reviewable visual testing workflow
- Select important UI states. Cover pages, components, and states where a visual defect would matter: for example, a key checkout step, an expanded navigation menu, or an error state. Choose coverage according to product risk; there is no universal target number of snapshots.
- Establish an accepted baseline. Capture representative states under consistent conditions. Chromatic describes taking snapshots in a cloud browser to establish a baseline in its quickstart. Playwright stores screenshot snapshots in the repository for comparison, as described in its visual comparisons documentation.
- Run captures after code changes. A team can trigger captures through its CI or pull-request process. Chromatic documents UI Tests running in CI as code is pushed; with Playwright’s native screenshot assertions, the team configures the surrounding CI execution itself. See Chromatic’s pull-request workflow and Playwright’s screenshot assertions.
- Inspect the diff in context. Compare the changed region with the pull request’s stated intent. Check related states and viewports where the same component appears. If the difference is not explained by the change, investigate before deciding.
- Approve or reject deliberately. Accept a change when the new appearance is intended and correct; reject it when it is an unintended regression. In Chromatic, denying a change marks it as a regression and fails the build, according to its quickstart.
- Keep discussion tied to the current result. Base approval on the latest relevant build, not an outdated capture. Chromatic limits review to the latest build on a branch, maintains independent branch baselines until merge, and disables comments on old builds to keep discussion attached to current UI; see its quickstart.
How to judge a visual diff
Approve when the change is intentional
Approve only after confirming that the new appearance matches the intended product change and that the affected states still behave as expected. A planned typography, spacing, color, or component update can be a valid baseline change; the approval records the new visual expectation for later comparisons.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reject when the cause is unexplained or incorrect
Do not approve just to clear a failing check. Look for accidental style overrides, changed assets, font-loading differences, broken content, or layout shifts. If the cause is not clear, ask the author or reproduce the state before making a baseline decision.
Separate automated testing from stakeholder sign-off
Chromatic distinguishes UI Tests, which compare snapshots with accepted baselines, from UI Review, which presents the change expected on the base branch after a pull request is merged and supports stakeholder discussion. Its documentation says: “UI Review is different than UI Tests because it shows you what will change on the base branch when you merge a pull request.” See Chromatic’s pull-request workflow. A passing visual test and a design or product sign-off therefore answer different questions.

Choose a baseline and review workflow
| Approach | Baseline and review model | Approval scope and fit |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright screenshot assertions | Screenshot snapshot files are managed in version control and reviewed with repository changes, as documented at Playwright. | The cited documentation describes assertions and baseline files rather than a hosted approval interface. Fits teams that want screenshot comparisons integrated with Playwright and are prepared to manage snapshots and review conventions in the repository. |
| Chromatic | Hosted snapshots and branch-specific baselines; its pull-request workflow includes CI UI Tests and a separate UI Review for stakeholders. See quickstart and in-pull-request workflow. | Changes can be accepted or denied. Chromatic also documents a Playwright integration and component/story-oriented workflow at Chromatic for Playwright and quickstart. |
| BrowserStack Percy | The cited documentation describes approvals in Percy’s hosted review UI: Percy approval workflow. | Approval can apply to an entire build, groups of matching visual changes, or individual snapshots. Snapshot approval applies across the browser and width combinations represented by that snapshot, according to the approval documentation. |
| ScreenshotNeo | ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for capturing screenshots or PDFs; the facts provided here do not establish it as a visual-regression baseline approval system. | Consider it first when the need is to capture clean website screenshots or let an AI agent request captures, rather than to replace the baseline-review workflows above. It removes known consent banners and other overlays before capture, and only clean shots are billed. |
The useful dividing line is ownership and review surface: repository-managed snapshots keep files and conventions with the code, while hosted services provide a dedicated review interface. Check each service’s current program costs, limits, and security terms before choosing; those details are not established here. Chromatic documents both component/story use and Playwright integration, so teams can evaluate fit against their existing test framework and capture surface.
Capture clean screenshots with ScreenshotNeo
For baseline testing, use your chosen visual testing system to capture and compare states. If you instead need a clean screenshot of a live website or a capture endpoint for an agent, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Responses identify page verdict and billing status with headers, and bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the target URL and supply your API key. The default response can be PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF depending on the request options; consult the API documentation for supported parameters. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.

Common review problems and practical fixes
- The build fails after a visual change: Determine whether the diff is intended before approving. In Chromatic, denial marks a regression and fails the build; investigate and correct unintended changes, or accept the verified intentional update.
- The diff is difficult to interpret: Compare the same UI state and capture conditions, then inspect the changed area alongside the pull request’s intent. Review related states or viewports rather than assuming one screenshot proves the whole change is sound.
- Review comments refer to an old render: Return to the latest branch build before deciding. Chromatic disables comments on old builds and limits review to the latest build on a branch, as its quickstart explains.
- A snapshot differs across branches: Account for branch-specific baselines. Chromatic documents that branches maintain independent baselines until merge; review the current branch result and its merge context in the quickstart.
- The team expects stakeholder approval from a test pass: Treat comparison and sign-off as separate steps. Chromatic’s workflow documentation distinguishes UI Tests from UI Review.
- A live-site capture includes consent or chat overlays: For screenshot capture rather than baseline approval, ScreenshotNeo’s consent-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup may help; its documentation describes the request options.
