Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A difference tells you that the rendered interface changed—not whether the change is a bug. Reviewing the diff lets a team catch unintended layout or styling changes that functional tests may not detect.
How does visual regression testing work?
A visual test captures a specific interface in a defined state and compares that image with a saved baseline. For example, a test might capture a checkout page with a banner visible, or a form after validation errors appear. If the new image differs, the test reports the change for review.
- Choose a representative state. Select pages, components, viewports, and interactions whose appearance matters. The test needs to reach that state before taking a screenshot.
- Capture and save a baseline. In Playwright, the first screenshot run creates the reference image used for later comparisons. Playwright’s screenshot testing guide explains the baseline workflow.
- Capture the same state after a change. Run the test again after a code update. Playwright’s
toHaveScreenshot()assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the final capture with the expected image. See the assertion details. - Review the difference. Determine whether it came from an unintended CSS or layout change, an intentional design update, or variation in the capture.
- Update the baseline when appropriate. If the new appearance is intended, review and accept it as the reference for future runs. Playwright documents updating screenshots with its snapshot-update option; hosted review workflows can show a new capture alongside the baseline.
What can screenshot diffs catch that functional tests miss?
Functional tests can confirm that a button works, a form submits, or a route loads without checking whether the page still looks right. A layout shift, clipped text, unexpected spacing, or an element covering another one may leave the underlying behavior intact. Chromatic uses a checkout button obscured by a banner as an example of a visual problem that logic-focused checks can miss. Chromatic’s visual testing documentation describes its approach.
Visual checks complement functional assertions rather than replacing them. A screenshot can reveal a changed appearance, but a human reviewer or a configured policy must decide whether that change is acceptable.

Why are screenshots different between runs?
The browser’s rendering environment can affect the captured pixels. Playwright names the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode among possible sources of variation. Keeping the environment consistent between baseline creation and test runs makes comparisons more reliable. Playwright outlines these sources of variation.
Control content that changes on its own
Timestamps, animations, rotating promotions, and remote data can change between runs even when your code has not. Playwright’s screenshot options include stylePath, which applies a stylesheet during capture; a team can use it to hide or otherwise control volatile elements. This helps reduce noise, but it does not guarantee that every source of nondeterminism is eliminated.

Choose a comparison tolerance deliberately
Playwright allows teams to configure a maximum number of differing pixels and a color-difference threshold. Its documentation describes a color threshold that can be set to zero for strict comparison or one for lax comparison. The threshold guidance explains the options. A stricter comparison can surface smaller changes but may also flag harmless variation; a looser one can suppress noise while overlooking small defects. Calibrate the settings against your capture environment and inspect representative diffs instead of treating any threshold as universally correct.
Should you use Playwright or a hosted visual testing service?
Both approaches compare captures with baselines, but they fit different workflows. Playwright offers screenshot assertions in a browser test runner; a hosted service can provide cloud capture and a review flow for visual changes. Chromatic documents cloud capture and pixel comparisons against prior baselines. Its visual testing overview, snapshot documentation, and review workflow guide describe those features.

- It matches an intended update: review the result and update the baseline so future runs expect the new appearance.
- It reveals an unintended change: investigate the associated code and correct the layout or styling before approving a new reference.
- It appears unrelated to the change under test: check for environmental inconsistency or volatile content, then stabilize capture conditions and rerun.
Playwright and Chromatic documentation supports the workflows described here; it does not establish a comparative performance result between them. Features and documentation can change, so consult the linked official guides for current behavior.
