Catch unintended website UI changes by repeatedly rendering important pages and interaction states, comparing screenshots with reviewed baselines, and investigating every meaningful difference before approving an update. A visual check can reveal a broken layout, unexpected text, color, or asset change even when functional tests still pass.
What visual regression monitoring checks
Visual regression testing compares a current rendering with a previously reviewed screenshot at a chosen checkpoint. Applitools describes it as testing that ensures previously correct screens have not changed unexpectedly (Overview of Visual UI Testing).

It complements—not replaces—functional tests. A test can confirm that a button works or a route loads while missing a visual defect such as overlapping text, a shifted element, a missing image, or an unintended color change. Conversely, a screenshot comparison does not prove that a control works, that a page is accessible, or that untested browsers and states are correct.
A practical visual regression workflow
- Choose representative checkpoints. Select important routes and user journeys, then identify the page or component states where an unintended visual change would matter.
- Make the state reproducible. Use stable test data and predictable page state so that screenshots do not change simply because content or timing varies.
- Capture screenshots at stable points. Take them after the page and relevant interactions have reached the intended state. The suite only checks the routes, viewports, and states it actually captures.
- Compare with a reviewed baseline. Keep reference screenshots in version control or use a service-managed baseline, and review changes in the team’s normal workflow.
- Inspect each reported difference. Determine whether it is a regression, an intentional design or content update, or rendering variation. Do not treat every pixel difference as an automatic defect.
- Approve and update deliberately. Update a baseline only after deciding that the changed appearance is intended. Keep the new reference reviewable alongside the code or design change.
This checkpoint, baseline, and review loop is also described in the Applitools documentation.

Choose coverage that matches risk
Routes and journeys
Start with the pages and user journeys that matter most, such as a landing page, a key form, or a purchase flow. Expand coverage according to product risk and the time available to maintain stable tests. Capturing a single static landing page will not reveal a change confined to a menu, modal, or later step in a journey.
Viewports and browsers
Choose viewports and browser coverage that reflect the environments you need to support. A screenshot at one viewport does not establish how the page renders at other sizes or in other browsers. Keep the chosen combinations explicit so reviewers understand what a passing check covers.

Component and page checks
Component-level checks can make a failure easier to localize when the interface is built from reusable components. Page-level checks show how components render together in the integrated interface. These approaches serve different purposes; select checkpoints based on the likely impact and where a defect would be easiest to diagnose.

Implementation paths
The right implementation depends on your existing test stack, who owns the baselines, how reviewers approve changes, the browsers and viewports you need, how dynamic regions are handled, and operational cost. | Playwright-native screenshot comparisons | Playwright provides toHaveScreenshot() assertions and a reference update workflow using --update-snapshots. Its documentation says snapshots should be committed and reviewed. See Visual comparisons. |

| Chromatic | Chromatic documents screenshot capture and comparison in its cloud workflow, including Playwright integration. Verify current pricing with the provider. |
| Applitools Eyes | Applitools documents visual checkpoints, baseline comparison, review of changes, and a Playwright integration. Its materials describe visual AI features; those are vendor claims, not independent comparative evidence. See Overview of Visual UI Testing and Playwright Integration. | Evaluate how its comparison and review flow handles your pages and dynamic content, and verify current pricing with the provider. |
| ScreenshotNeo | ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its documented offering includes cleanup before capture, and it bills only clean shots. | It can provide captures through an API or AI-agent tools, but a screenshot capture alone is not a visual-regression suite: you still need to store and compare baselines and review differences. |
Across any option, ask how snapshots are owned, how reviewers approve changes, which browsers and viewports are covered, how ignored or dynamic regions are controlled, how sensitive comparisons are, and what ongoing cost applies. No single option is established as best for every team.
Keep screenshots useful and noise manageable
- Stabilize test data and page state. Content variation can look like a UI regression, so use predictable inputs and checkpoints where possible.
- Use meaningful checkpoints. Capture states that answer a product question instead of collecting screenshots without a clear review purpose.
- Review the difference before changing the baseline. A change may be intentional, caused by content or rendering variation, or a real defect; the screenshot alone does not make that decision.
- Expand scope deliberately. Prioritize important routes and journeys, then add coverage as risk and maintenance capacity allow.
- Keep functional checks alongside visual checks. Passing screenshot comparisons does not establish that behavior works, and passing behavior assertions does not establish that the rendered interface looks right.
Troubleshooting common visual-check failures
The same page reports differences on repeated runs
First check whether test data, page state, or the timing of the capture varies between runs. Make the state reproducible and take the screenshot at a stable checkpoint; otherwise, the comparison may report changing content rather than a UI change.

A diff appears after a planned design update
Inspect the changed region and confirm the design or content change was intended. If approved, update the baseline through the review process rather than treating the expected difference as a defect.
A visual check passes but users still report a broken interface
Confirm that the affected route, viewport, browser, and interaction state are actually covered. A passing screenshot only speaks to captured states; pair it with functional tests and add a checkpoint for the uncovered case.

For a direct capture, call ScreenshotNeo’s screenshot API; its documentation describes the available parameters. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. For visual regression monitoring, you still need a baseline comparison and review process around the captures.
