Neither VirtualBox nor VMware Workstation can be called universally faster on AMD Ryzen based on the available official documentation. Both can use AMD hardware virtualization in documented setups, but compatibility and speed depend on the host operating system, firmware settings, guest workload, VM configuration, and whether Hyper-V or another hypervisor is active. Choose by checking the exact setup and features you need—not by assuming one wins on every Ryzen PC.
Are both products compatible with AMD Ryzen?
Generally, yes, when the host and firmware meet the relevant requirements. Broadcom lists AMD-V as a Workstation CPU requirement and says Workstation runs on 64-bit AMD hardware with 64-bit Windows or Linux hosts. That is not a guarantee for every Ryzen model, host build, or guest combination; check the current Workstation FAQ and supported-system information for the release you plan to install.
VirtualBox’s 7.2 guide documents AMD-V-related hardware virtualization controls, including nested virtualization and nested paging. Verify the host requirements for the particular VirtualBox release rather than assuming its support matrix is identical to Workstation’s; the VirtualBox 7.2 User Guide covers its VM configuration options.
Check AMD-V/SVM in firmware
AMD’s hardware virtualization feature is commonly labeled SVM in motherboard firmware. If virtualization features are unavailable, check the firmware settings and make sure SVM or AMD-V is enabled. Menu names and locations vary by motherboard, so consult its firmware documentation. Then confirm the chosen hypervisor recognizes hardware virtualization.

Which one is faster on Ryzen?
There is no sound basis in the official sources reviewed for ranking VirtualBox and Workstation by speed on Ryzen. A fair comparison would require the same Ryzen system, firmware state, host OS and build, hypervisor versions, guest OS, VM allocations, storage, graphics settings, background hypervisor status, and workload. Without that controlled comparison, claims that one is simply “faster on Ryzen” are not established.
Oracle says enabling nested paging can provide a “significant performance increase” when the host CPU supports it and hardware virtualization is enabled. This is Oracle’s qualitative guidance for VirtualBox—not a measured percentage, nor evidence that VirtualBox outperforms Workstation. Its 7.2 documentation also advises against assigning more virtual CPU cores than are physically available.

For your own choice, focus on the work the VM must do: CPU-heavy computation, disk-intensive tasks, graphical applications, or several VMs at once can respond differently to the same settings. Host memory, storage, virtual disk controller, graphics configuration, and background applications also affect the experience. Vendor feature descriptions do not substitute for a workload-matched benchmark.
Do you need nested virtualization?
Nested virtualization means exposing hardware virtualization support to a guest VM so that the guest can run another hypervisor or software that depends on virtualization. It is a distinct requirement from running ordinary guest operating systems. If you need a hypervisor inside a VM, a Kubernetes environment that depends on one, or WSL 2 in a guest, check the exact product, host, and guest combination before choosing.

VirtualBox
VirtualBox 7.2 documents a Nested VT-x/AMD-V passthrough setting, along with hardware virtualization and nested paging controls. These documented controls make it possible to investigate nested setups, but they do not establish support for every guest or workload. Consult the current VirtualBox guide for the relevant settings.
VMware Workstation
Broadcom documents nesting for limited scenarios. It states that features requiring nested virtualization in a Workstation VM cannot currently be enabled while Hyper-V is enabled on the host. Check Broadcom’s Workstation FAQ and nested virtualization guidance for the particular configuration.

What if Hyper-V or WSL 2 is enabled on the Windows host?
Hyper-V can affect how hardware virtualization extensions are controlled and exposed. Microsoft explains that a hypervisor controls those extensions unless it exposes them to a nested guest. Its documentation also warns that non-Microsoft virtualization applications running inside Hyper-V virtual machines are unsupported and likely to fail; this warning concerns that configuration and should not be generalized to every Ryzen PC or every current release.
For VMware Workstation, the specific Broadcom limitation matters when a Workstation VM needs nested virtualization: Broadcom says that feature cannot currently be enabled while Hyper-V is enabled on the host. If nesting is essential, check the documented combination before changing Windows features. For ordinary VMs, do not infer failure solely from the presence of Hyper-V or WSL 2; verify the behavior of your exact host and Workstation release.

Microsoft’s nested virtualization documentation describes how hardware virtualization support is made available to guest VMs. Keep host-level Hyper-V/VBS interactions distinct from ordinary performance tuning: they can change compatibility and resource access, not just benchmark results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare them for your setup?
Start with the constraints that can rule out a choice, then compare workflow and devices. Support differs by release and host OS, so use current product documentation for your exact versions.
| What to compare | VirtualBox | VMware Workstation |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen hardware | The 7.2 guide documents AMD-V nested passthrough and nested paging controls. | Broadcom says 64-bit AMD hosts are supported and AMD-V is required. |
| Host OS | Check requirements for the exact VirtualBox release; the cited 7.2 configuration guide is not a complete cross-product support comparison. | Broadcom lists 64-bit Windows and Linux hosts; confirm the current release’s supported systems. |
| Nested workloads | Has a documented Nested VT-x/AMD-V passthrough setting; check guest and workload requirements. | Broadcom documents limited scenarios and a Hyper-V host constraint for features requiring nesting in a Workstation VM. |
| Devices and portability | Documents graphics, storage controllers, USB, and networking. Oracle warns that different storage controllers can make moving a VM between hypervisors difficult or impossible. | Broadcom describes virtual disks and networking modes; check the formats and device needs for your workflow. |
| Workflow | The guide covers VM configuration and paravirtualization options. | Broadcom describes multiple simultaneous VMs, virtual networking, clones, and vSphere connectivity in Pro. |
| Licensing | The cited VirtualBox guide does not establish a relevant purchase price. | Broadcom’s FAQ says personal use became free on May 6, 2024 after account registration; commercial use requires a paid license. Verify current terms. |
Use this decision checklist
- Host: Confirm the operating system and build are supported by the exact versions under consideration.
- Firmware: Verify SVM/AMD-V is enabled if hardware virtualization is needed.
- Guest: Check support for the guest OS and any required devices or services.
- Nesting: Decide whether the guest itself must run a hypervisor, Kubernetes environment, or WSL 2; validate the precise combination, especially if Hyper-V is enabled.
- VM setup: Compare vCPU and memory allocation, storage controller and disk format, graphics, USB, and network needs.
- Workflow: Consider snapshots, cloning, multiple simultaneous VMs, migration, and any vSphere connection requirement.
- License: Check current Workstation terms for your intended personal or commercial use before installing.
What would make a Ryzen speed comparison trustworthy?
A useful head-to-head test must hold the machine and workload constant and report enough detail to reproduce the setup. At minimum, it should name the Ryzen model and generation, motherboard firmware and SVM state, host OS and build, hypervisor versions, guest OS, vCPU and memory allocations, virtual disk controller and storage, graphics configuration, Hyper-V/VBS status, workload, number of repetitions, and measured results. No controlled same-machine Ryzen comparison with those details is established by the official sources cited here.
