If VirtualBox says it is unable to insert a virtual optical disk, the message alone does not identify the cause. Check the full error, the selected VM’s optical drive, and whether the ISO still exists and is accessible on the Windows host. A locked-media error and a duplicate ISO UUID conflict are different problems and call for different checks.
Start with the exact error and the right virtual machine
Before changing storage settings, note the complete dialog text and any error code. For example, a VirtualBox support-forum report includes “Could not mount the media/drive” and VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED. A separate VirtualBox project ticket describes a duplicate Guest Additions ISO UUID conflict. These are distinct reported conditions, not interchangeable diagnoses.

- Record the whole error. Preserve the code and any path, medium name, or UUID mentioned. This determines which troubleshooting branch is relevant.
- Confirm the selected VM. Make sure the error belongs to the intended virtual machine, then inspect its optical drive in that VM’s storage settings.
- Check the drive’s current state. Determine whether it is empty or already has an ISO attached. VirtualBox supports an empty optical drive as well as attaching an image file; the controller and device slot depend on the VM’s configuration. See the VBoxManage documentation.
Check that the ISO is available to Windows
If the error identifies an image path, verify that the ISO is still at that exact location and that Windows can access it. A moved, renamed, disconnected, or unavailable file cannot be selected successfully as optical media. VirtualBox’s documented workflow selects an image from the host file system.

- Check the displayed path against the file’s current location.
- If the ISO is on removable or external storage, make sure that storage is connected and available.
- Confirm that the ISO is the image you intend to mount—for example, Guest Additions rather than a different installer or utility image.
Insert the Guest Additions image using VirtualBox’s menu
For Guest Additions, Oracle documents the menu action Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD Image. The Oracle VM VirtualBox User Manual, version 7.0.0 says this mounts the Guest Additions ISO inside the VM. Menu labels and behavior can vary by installed VirtualBox version, so use documentation that matches your installation when they differ.

- Start or select the intended VM and open its Devices menu.
- Select Insert Guest Additions CD Image.
- If the action is unavailable or does not work, check the VirtualBox installation directory on the Windows host for
VBoxGuestAdditions.iso. The version 7.0.0 manual says the ISO is usually in the installation directory, commonlyC:Program FilesOracleVirtualBox. - Use the VM’s optical-drive image chooser to select that file if it is present. If the file is missing, do not substitute an unrelated ISO; check the installation and documentation for your installed version.
If the error says the medium is locked
VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED is a clue about the virtual device’s media state, not proof of one universal cause or fix. A 2020 support-forum report records it during a Guest Additions insertion attempt, but does not establish that all similar failures share the same cause.
- Inspect whether the intended ISO is already mounted in the VM.
- Check whether the optical device appears to be in use before trying to detach and reinsert media.
- Use the VM’s storage controls to make a deliberate change only after confirming the correct drive and image. Avoid repeatedly attempting insertion without checking the current state.
If there is a duplicate Guest Additions ISO UUID conflict
A VirtualBox project ticket opened in 2025 describes a specific duplicate-UUID conflict involving Guest Additions and temporarily inaccessible VM configuration files. It is an edge case, not the default explanation for an insertion error.
If your error explicitly identifies a UUID conflict, first make sure the location holding the VM files is available. That includes any external, removable, or encrypted location the VM depends on. The ticket reports that restoring access to the configuration files was relevant to its case; it does not establish this as a fix for locked-media errors or other messages.
Use VBoxManage only when you know the VM’s storage layout
VBoxManage can manage optical media, including an empty drive, the Guest Additions image, or an existing image file. The cited syntax is from an older VirtualBox manual edition, so check the documentation for your installed version before using commands. You also need the exact VM name or identifier, image path, storage controller, and optical device slot; do not guess these values.

The older manual notes that some removable-media changes can be made while a VM is running, while other storage changes require the VM to be powered off. Whether a change is safe live depends on the operation and configuration. If you cannot identify the controller and port/device values, use the graphical storage controls or collect diagnostics rather than copying an unqualified command.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If none of those checks explains the failure
Keep the complete error text, VirtualBox version, guest operating system, and relevant VM storage details together when seeking support. The documented workflows and reported cases do not establish one universal repair for every “Unable to insert the virtual optical disk” message.
Do not delete VM files or edit the .vbox configuration file as a first-line fix. If a manual configuration change is being considered, preserve a backup of the VM configuration first and make changes only with a clear diagnosis. Physical discs or a physical optical drive are not required to attach an ISO stored on the host.
