Published U.S.-oriented human virtual receptionist plans in a provider sample reviewed October 7, 2026, start at $165 to $350 per month. That spread is not a like-for-like comparison: plans include different amounts of usage, and some charge by the minute while another charges by the call. Your likely bill depends on call volume, call length, overages, and setup fees—not just the advertised starting price.

Published monthly plan prices in the sample

The following are provider-published prices reviewed October 7, 2026. They are examples, not an industry average; the services are U.S.-oriented, and the cited pages do not establish prices for other geographies. Plans and terms can change.

Provider and plan type Published monthly tiers Billing basis and terms shown
Abby, human receptionist plans $165 for 50 Abby Minutes; $329 for 100; $599 for 200; $1,380 for 500 Monthly Abby Minutes. Abby says plans are month to month, have no setup fee, include a free trial, and bill overage at the plan’s Abby Minute rate. [Abby pricing page] [Abby AI receptionist information]
Ruby, human receptionist plans $250 for 50 minutes; $395 for 100; $720 for 200; $1,725 for 500 Monthly receptionist-minute allowance; Ruby says the same features are included across minute tiers and advertises 24/7 live answering. Its cited public pricing page does not show an overage rate. [Ruby pricing page]
Smith.ai, human receptionist plans $300 for 30 calls; $810 for 90; $2,100 for 300 Per-call plans. Listed overage rates are $11.50 per call on Starter, $10.50 on Basic, and $8.50 on Pro. The page states a 30-day money-back guarantee. [Smith.ai pricing page]
AnswerConnect, human receptionist plans $350 for 200 minutes; $395 for 300; $575 for 400 Per-minute plans. Entry has a $49.99 setup fee and $2.50 per additional minute; Growth lists no setup fee and $1.85 per additional minute; Standard has a $49.99 setup fee and $1.85 per additional minute. Interactions are rounded up to whole minutes; the first 30 interactions under 30 seconds in a billing cycle are not charged. [AnswerConnect pricing page]

The lowest listed entry price is Abby’s $165 monthly plan, while the highest entry price in this sample is AnswerConnect’s $350 plan. But Abby’s allowance is measured in Abby Minutes, AnswerConnect’s in minutes, and Smith.ai’s in calls. Those figures alone do not show which service would cost less for a particular business.

Why the billing unit changes your likely bill

Per-call pricing

Smith.ai’s human plans charge by the call. That makes call count the key comparison point, but call length does not appear as the published plan unit. A business receiving many brief calls should calculate against the included call allowance and the stated per-call overage rates.

Per-minute pricing

Ruby and AnswerConnect publish minute allowances, as does Abby using its own Abby Minute unit. With minute-based plans, total call duration matters: a smaller number of long calls can use more of an allowance than a larger number of short calls. AnswerConnect additionally rounds interactions up to whole minutes, so its measured usage can exceed the exact time spent talking.

AI handling is a separate comparison

Abby says AI answering uses half an Abby Minute, so its entry plan can cover up to 100 AI minutes. That is not the same unit as 50 human receptionist minutes. Smith.ai also publishes a separate AI receptionist product with its own call tiers; its AI units should not be treated as equivalent to the human plans listed above.

How to estimate your monthly cost

  1. Count calls and estimate their duration. Use a representative month and account for busy periods. Compare the pattern with included calls or minutes rather than choosing by the smallest entry price.
  2. Match the plan’s billable unit. For a per-call plan, estimate calls; for a per-minute plan, estimate total answering time. Short-call-heavy and long-call-heavy businesses can fare differently under those models.
  3. Calculate usage above the allowance. Smith.ai lists overage rates per call, Abby says overage is billed at the plan’s Abby Minute rate, and AnswerConnect lists per-minute overage rates. Ruby’s cited pricing page does not state an overage rate, so confirm it before budgeting beyond the included minutes.
  4. Add rounding and setup charges where applicable. AnswerConnect rounds interactions up to whole minutes and lists setup fees on Entry and Standard. Include these terms when estimating the first bill and ongoing usage.
  5. Separate human and AI usage. Compare each service against the intended handling method and its own unit; do not substitute AI minutes for human minutes or AI calls for human calls.

Plan terms to check before signing up

Published plan prices do not capture every possible cost or condition. Verify current exclusions, add-ons, overage rules, and contract terms directly with the provider. The cited pages show these specific terms: Abby advertises month-to-month plans, a free trial, and no setup fee; AnswerConnect lists setup fees on two tiers; and Smith.ai states a 30-day money-back guarantee. Ruby’s cited public page does not show an overage rate.

What the price range does—and does not—tell you

In this published sample, entry human-receptionist plans range from $165 to $350 per month. Listed upper tiers range from $575 at AnswerConnect to $2,100 at Smith.ai, with Abby at $1,380 and Ruby at $1,725. These are provider-specific tiers with different allowances and billing units, not a representative market average. The available figures also do not establish whether a virtual receptionist costs less than hiring an in-house receptionist; a dated labor-cost comparison is not included here.
