Android developers commonly use Android Studio’s Android Emulator; Apple developers use simulated-device run destinations in Xcode’s Simulator. Both are useful for frequent development checks, but neither proves an app will behave or perform the same way on real hardware.
What is a virtual device for app testing?
A virtual device lets you run and debug an app in a device-like environment without having that exact physical phone or tablet on hand. You can choose configurations such as screen characteristics and operating-system versions, then use the environment for development checks and repeatable tests.

On Android, the official tool is the Android Emulator. An Android Virtual Device (AVD) is a configured virtual Android device used with the emulator. On Apple platforms, Xcode provides simulated-device run destinations through Simulator. Apple calls these simulated devices; a simulated iPhone is not a physical iPhone or a complete replica of its hardware.
Virtual devices are most useful for finding issues early and checking relevant configurations. They should be part of a testing mix, not treated as a replacement for testing on physical devices.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Android Emulator, AVD, Apple Simulator, and real devices
| Option | What it is | Useful for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Emulator | Android’s tool for simulating Android devices on a computer. | Running and debugging Android apps across device configurations and Android API levels without owning each device. | High fidelity does not mean every physical-device feature or behavior is reproduced. Android Developers |
| Android Virtual Device (AVD) | A configured virtual Android device used for testing. | Repeatable tests against a chosen Android configuration. | AVDs have known limitations; virtual testing does not cover every hardware-dependent behavior. Firebase Documentation |
| Apple Simulator | Xcode’s environment for running apps on simulated Apple-platform devices. | Debugging across simulated hardware configurations that may not be available to you physically. | Apple says Simulator does not replicate physical-device performance or features. Apple Developer Documentation |
| Physical device | An actual phone or tablet. | Validating hardware-dependent behavior and assessing real-device performance. | Requires access to the relevant hardware; a few representative devices may not cover every device used by your audience. |
| Cloud device testing | A hosted service that runs or exposes devices remotely. | Accessing remote devices when maintaining a local collection is impractical. | Available device catalogues, platforms, pricing, and limits depend on the provider and can change. Google Cloud describes physical and virtual Android devices and physical iOS devices in its Device Run documentation: Google Cloud. |
Should you use an emulator or a real device?
Use a virtual device for fast, frequent checks during development, including tests that benefit from repeatable configurations. Use a physical device when the result depends on hardware or when you need confidence in how the app performs and behaves on an actual target device. For release confidence, combine the two approaches according to the app’s risks.
- Start with virtual devices for early debugging and routine checks across relevant screen sizes or Android API levels.
- Move to physical devices for features that rely on sensors or other device capabilities, and for checks where actual performance matters.
- Consider cloud testing if remote access to hosted devices fits your workflow better than maintaining your own collection. Confirm the provider’s current catalogue and terms before depending on a particular device or platform.
There is no universal device count or model list that suits every app. Choose representative physical devices based on your users, supported versions, and the hardware features your app uses.

Is iOS Simulator the same as an emulator?
They serve a similar development purpose—running an app in a software-provided device environment—but the names and tools differ. Android’s tool is Android Emulator; Apple’s is Xcode Simulator, which Apple describes in terms of simulated devices. Avoid assuming that either environment is a complete substitute for its platform’s physical devices. Apple specifically cautions that Simulator does not reproduce a physical device’s performance or features.

Yes. You can use Android Emulator or Xcode Simulator for development, debugging, and many configuration checks without owning the corresponding physical phone. That can expose issues early, but a simulated pass cannot verify behavior that depends on real hardware or establish actual device performance. Plan physical-device checks for those risks before release.

A practical testing workflow
- Choose the platform’s local virtual device. Use Android Studio’s Android Emulator for Android, or a simulated-device run destination in Xcode for Apple platforms. Begin with a useful baseline configuration.
- Run and debug during development. Use the virtual environment for frequent iteration and automated checks that benefit from a repeatable setup.
- Add relevant configurations. Include device profiles and OS or API levels that matter to your app’s supported audience. This helps reveal configuration-specific problems without claiming to cover every hardware detail.
- Validate hardware-dependent and release-critical behavior physically. Select representative devices based on the app’s audience and features rather than relying on a universal model list.
- Use hosted testing if it addresses an access or workflow need. Check current platform support, device availability, pricing, and service limits directly with the provider before building a test plan around them.
Where website screenshots fit—and where they do not
A screenshot of a website can help document web content or inspect a page, but it is not a virtual mobile device and does not test a native app’s interaction with phone hardware. For website captures, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its browser captures do not replace Android Emulator, Xcode Simulator, or physical-device app testing.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot, one GET request can return an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a simulated run release proof: simulated devices cannot establish all physical-device behavior or performance. Run physical checks for hardware-dependent and release-critical paths.
- Assuming “high fidelity” means hardware equivalence: Android Emulator supports varied configurations, but that does not guarantee every physical behavior is reproduced.
- Treating Android AVD and Apple Simulator as identical tools: they belong to different platform workflows; use the official environment for the platform you are targeting.
- Choosing devices without regard to the app: prioritize configurations, physical devices, and hardware features relevant to your users and supported versions.
- Relying on an old cloud-device catalogue: verify current service scope and terms with the provider instead of assuming a device or platform remains available.
