Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS): Meaning, Resources, and VPS Differences

A VDS is a virtual server, not automatically a whole physical machine. Learn how providers use the term and which resource specifications to check.

A virtual dedicated server (VDS) is a virtual machine that gives a customer a server environment while running on a physical host. It is not necessarily an entire physical server. VDS and virtual private server (VPS) often describe the same general kind of hosting, but some providers use “VDS” for plans with more explicitly dedicated resources. Check the plan’s specifications rather than relying on its name.

How a virtual dedicated server works

A hypervisor divides a physical server’s computing capacity into virtual machines. Each virtual machine behaves like a server from the customer’s perspective, even though the physical infrastructure may also support other customers. Google Cloud summarizes the idea by saying, “A virtual server re-creates the functionality of a dedicated physical server” (Google Cloud).

Here, “dedicated” describes the server-like environment, not necessarily exclusive access to the host’s hardware. A VDS is still virtualized; whether particular resources are reserved or shared depends on the provider and plan.

Are VDS and VPS the same thing?

Often, yes. TechTarget describes VDS as another name for VPS, and both terms are commonly used for virtual servers hosted on physical infrastructure (TechTarget). But naming is not consistent across providers. A company may use VDS to distinguish a product tier or to highlight dedicated CPU cores or other resource guarantees. That is a plan-specific distinction, not a universal definition of VDS.

How VDS differs from other server options

Option What it generally means What to verify
VPS A virtual server hosted on physical infrastructure, usually with an allocated set of resources; often synonymous with VDS. Resource limits and allocation, host architecture, management responsibilities, and plan features.
VDS Often another name for VPS; some providers use it for a plan with more explicit resource dedication. Whether CPU cores are physical and dedicated or virtual and shared, and which resources are guaranteed.
Cloud VM A virtual machine delivered from a cloud resource pool. Compared with a traditional VPS, it may draw on a broader infrastructure pool. Scaling, failure behavior, pricing, and the provider’s documented availability design.
Dedicated server An entire physical server rented to one customer. Hardware configuration, management responsibilities, scaling options, and total cost.

Google Cloud describes traditional VPS hosting as usually running on one physical server, while cloud VMs use a larger pool of resources (Google Cloud). That distinction does not, by itself, establish how a particular service handles hardware failures, redundancy, or migration; check the provider’s documentation.

A VDS is not inherently faster than a VPS. The label alone says nothing conclusive about workload performance. For a meaningful comparison, look at the actual CPU allocation and contention, RAM and storage, host topology, scaling options, management responsibilities, and pricing model.

What to check before choosing a VDS plan

  • CPU: Find out whether cores are physical or virtual, whether they are dedicated or shared, and what limits apply. Contabo, for example, says its Cloud VDS instances use dedicated physical CPU cores. That describes Contabo’s product, not every VDS (Contabo documentation).
  • Memory and storage: Check the stated RAM and storage allocation, storage type if specified, and any limits that matter to your workload.
  • Bandwidth: Review included traffic, network limits, and any conditions that could affect your expected use.
  • Virtualization features: If you need to run virtual machines inside your server, check whether nested virtualization is supported and under what conditions.
  • Host and service behavior: Look for documentation about scaling, hardware failures, backups, availability, and migration rather than assuming cloud-like redundancy.
  • Management: Confirm what you are responsible for, such as operating system updates, security configuration, and application maintenance.
  • Price model: Compare recurring charges and any usage-based costs alongside the resources and service responsibilities.

What VDS hosting is commonly used for

Virtual servers are commonly used for websites, application hosting, development and testing, databases, email servers, and virtual desktops. AWS also lists business applications, websites, and software test environments as VPS use cases (AWS). These are general use cases, not a guarantee that a particular VDS plan has enough capacity or the right features for a specific workload.
