Vimeo is the better choice of the two for broadcasting a live event to YouTube. Eligible Vimeo plans support YouTube simulcasting or an RTMP destination. Camtasia is designed for recording and editing video, then exporting the finished result to YouTube; the TechSmith materials reviewed document no live-broadcast workflow. They can complement each other, but they are not equivalent live-streaming tools.
How Vimeo and Camtasia fit a YouTube workflow
Vimeo: live event and simulcast
Vimeo can send a live event to YouTube either through a direct account connection or by adding YouTube as an RTMP destination. Vimeo says direct integration supports up to 10 destinations; its YouTube RTMP instructions describe up to 20 simultaneous destinations. These are vendor-stated limits, not independent performance measures. Simulcasting requires an Advanced or Premium plan, or Enterprise with Events added. Check Vimeo’s current YouTube simulcasting instructions before configuring an event.

Camtasia: record, edit, publish
TechSmith presents Camtasia as a screen recorder and editor. It can capture a screen, camera, microphone, and system audio, edit the recording, and upload a finished video to YouTube. That makes it useful for a tutorial, a polished replay, or supporting material—but does not make it the documented live-broadcast path to YouTube. TechSmith’s Camtasia video guide describes making and uploading a video.
Which one should you choose?
| Your need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast a live event to YouTube | Vimeo | Its eligible live-event plans document direct YouTube simulcasting and RTMP destinations. |
| Record and edit a screen demonstration, then upload it | Camtasia | Recording, editing, and YouTube export are its documented workflow. |
| Go live, then create an edited tutorial or replay | Both, for different stages | Use a live platform and encoder for the event; use Camtasia afterward for editing and export. |
Make the decision based on whether you need a live broadcast, post-production, multiple destinations, and capture of screen, camera, microphone, or desktop audio. This is a workflow comparison, not a hands-on quality or price-value test. Current plan pricing was not established here, so check each vendor’s regional plan details before buying.

What Vimeo live streaming requires
Plan, YouTube access, and destinations
Vimeo’s documented simulcasting feature requires Advanced or Premium, or Enterprise with Events added. YouTube must have live streaming enabled through account verification, and you need credentials or manager access for the channel receiving the broadcast. Direct integration and custom RTMP have different destination limits, so choose the route that matches your production rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
An encoder and reliable connection
Vimeo states that an encoder is essential for a live event and names OBS, Wirecast, SlingStudio, Teradek encoders, and VIZRT Tricaster as compatible examples. Its external-encoder guidance recommends H.264, output up to 1920×1080, 30 fps (with 60 fps as the maximum input), and a three-second key-frame interval. Confirm that your encoder and destination support the settings you plan to use. See Vimeo’s external encoder guidance.

Audio and transport details that can affect the event
Screen sharing and desktop sound
Vimeo’s browser-based screen sharing captures microphone or input audio, but not desktop audio. If your demonstration depends on application sounds, music, or other computer audio, use an RTMP workflow through a broadcast encoder and verify the audio routing before going live. Vimeo explains its screen-sharing audio behavior.
RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT
Vimeo supports RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT. RTMPS encrypts the connection. Vimeo describes SRT as suited to unstable networks, but notes limited compatibility: it is not widely supported and does not support multi-audio-track SRT streams. Check encoder and destination compatibility before building a show around SRT. See Vimeo’s encoder setup guidance.

Common setup problems and fixes
- YouTube is not available as a destination: confirm the YouTube channel is verified for live streaming and that you have channel credentials or manager access. Also confirm your Vimeo plan includes simulcasting.
- The event starts but does not reach YouTube: recheck the selected destination, RTMP URL, and stream key in the encoder or Vimeo setup. Avoid sharing the stream key; regenerate it if it has been exposed.
- Desktop audio is missing from a screen share: browser-based Vimeo screen sharing does not capture desktop audio. Route system sound through a supported encoder in an RTMP workflow and test it before the event.
- The stream is rejected or unstable: compare the encoder output with Vimeo’s H.264, resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, and key-frame recommendations, then check the reliability of the internet connection.
- SRT is unavailable or lacks an audio track: confirm both ends support SRT and account for Vimeo’s stated limitations on widespread support and multi-audio-track SRT.
- The event ends at a plan limit: check the plan’s concurrent-stream and 12-hour duration limits, and whether an Enterprise add-on is needed for your event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If what you want is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos around the clock—not a camera-based live event—StreamNeo is a different option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free day.
