1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can handle many inner and around text-object edits in Vim or Neovim without Tree-sitter. Start with the built-in objects for words, delimiters, quotes, and tags; use targets.vim for more pair and separator targets, or define a narrow custom object when your text has a stable pattern. These approaches work best for local, predictable text—not every syntax-aware function, parameter, or nested structure.
What “inner” and “around” select
In Vim-style text objects, i generally selects an object’s contents, while a selects the object together with a boundary or surrounding context. For example, ci( changes the contents inside parentheses, and da( deletes a parenthesized region including its delimiters. The exact whitespace behavior varies by object, so “around” does not always mean only the text plus its delimiters.

You can use text objects after an operator, as in di' to delete the contents inside single quotes, or select them in Visual mode. Vim’s help documents the behavior object by object; check the help for the editor or Vim-emulation layer you actually use. Vim help: text objects.

For common editing, Vim already provides useful objects. Parentheses also have the aliases b for the inner form and ab for the around form; brackets and braces have corresponding inner and around forms.

Quote objects have a notable constraint: Vim’s documented behavior is line-local, and escaped quotes depend on the quoteescape option. Around-quote objects may also absorb trailing whitespace, or leading whitespace if no trailing whitespace is present. For details, see Vim’s text-object help.
Choose an extension based on the target you need
| Approach | Useful for | How it works | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in objects | Words, paired delimiters, quotes, and supported tag blocks | Editor-provided operator-pending and Visual-mode objects | Coverage and edge behavior are specific to the editor; quote objects are line-local in Vim. |
targets.vim |
Pairs, quotes, separators, arguments, and tags | Provides configurable text-object mappings | Zero-character matches cannot be visually selected. Check current installation and compatibility guidance before setting it up. |
vim-textobj-user |
A custom, well-defined text pattern | Lets authors define objects with regular expressions or functions | A custom rule is not a parser; nested, escaped, malformed, or multiline cases need testing. |
nvim-various-textobjs |
Neovim users who want additional local targets such as indentation, URLs, or subwords | Uses pattern matching for a collection of text objects | Its documentation warns of edge-case inaccuracies, unsupported counts for most objects, and limited multiline matching for most characterwise objects. |
Use targets.vim for punctuation, arguments, and separators
targets.vim extends the built-in approach with pair, quote, separator, argument, and tag object families. Its documented examples include using cin) to change inside a nearby parenthesis pair and da, to remove an item from a comma-separated list along with a separator, leaving the list well formed. Its mappings can be configured for seeking and counts, depending on the chosen configuration. See the targets.vim README for current setup and compatibility details.

Use vim-textobj-user when built-ins and existing extensions do not cover a text shape you encounter regularly. Its framework supports simple objects defined with regular expressions and more complex ones defined with functions. The project README illustrates custom paired boundaries and a line object whose inner selection omits indentation. See the vim-textobj-user README.

- Large Size: 800 x 300 mm + 2mm thickness adapt to all surfaces
- Non-Slip Base: The mouse pad has a non-slip base to ensure it stays in place on your desk, preventing it from sliding during use.
- Durable Stitched Edge: The circle edge stitching prevents the top layer from fraying and ensures the mousepad for long time use.
- Versatile Use: Not only suitable for office and everyday use, but also perfect for gamers and designers alike. It can also be a special gift for your family and friends.
Before relying on a custom object, test it against the actual text it will edit. In particular, verify nested delimiters, escaping, malformed input, and multiline regions. A pattern-based rule recognizes the boundaries you define; it does not automatically understand a language’s grammar.

nvim-various-textobjs offers Neovim users additional targets, including indentation, URLs, and subwords. It can be useful when the object is regular and local, but the project warns that pattern matching can fail in edge cases, most objects do not support counts, and most characterwise objects do not match multiline regions. It also notes that some filetype-specific pattern objects were deprecated because Tree-sitter-based objects can be more precise. Check the nvim-various-textobjs README for its current object list and limitations.

If an edit depends on syntax distinctions, nesting, or reliable function and parameter boundaries, pattern matching may not reproduce parser-based behavior. You may need to accept narrower coverage or write and test a specific non-Tree-sitter rule; for the Tree-sitter-based alternative, see the nvim-treesitter-textobjects README.

A practical way to decide
- Try a built-in object. Use the relevant word, delimiter, quote, or tag object with an operator such as
ci(, or select it in Visual mode. - Add targets.vim for common punctuation targets. Choose it when you want established pair, separator, argument, quote, or tag mappings rather than a custom definition.
- Write a custom object for a stable local pattern. Use
vim-textobj-userwhen the boundaries are specific to your text and you can test the cases that matter. - Keep pattern-based collections in their lane. For Neovim, consider
nvim-various-textobjswhen its available patterns fit; do not treat it as a general syntax-aware replacement.
