The ViewSonic VG1457 makes a strong case for a portable second screen—actually, two: it folds into a 2.6-pound unit with a pair of 14-inch displays. But convenience comes with a visible compromise. ViewSonic lists 250 cd/m² typical brightness, and Tom’s Hardware measured a maximum of 201 nits on its review unit. The VG1457 suits basic productivity and face-to-face presentations better than photo editing or movie watching.
What is the ViewSonic VG1457?
It is a foldable portable monitor with two 14-inch IPS panels, each at 1920 × 1200 resolution and a 16:10 aspect ratio. The design provides more workspace than a conventional single-panel portable display and can be arranged for landscape or portrait use, or opened toward another person for presentations. The US specifications list a 2.6-pound weight, 60 Hz refresh rate, 800:1 typical static contrast ratio, and anti-glare coating. ViewSonic lists a three-year limited warranty, subject to its terms. ViewSonic’s US product page has the current listing and warranty information.

How bright and accurate are the displays?
ViewSonic publishes 250 cd/m² typical brightness. Tom’s Hardware’s August 17, 2026 review says the company rated the displays for up to 300 nits maximum brightness, but its tested unit reached 201 nits. These are different claims: the published typical figure, the manufacturer’s stated maximum, and an independent measurement from one review unit. The test result should not be treated as a measurement of every VG1457.

Color coverage is modest in the same review: 44.8% DCI-P3 and 63.2% sRGB. Reviewer Brandon Hill found colors muted and dark movie scenes grayish. His conclusion was workload-dependent: “For more basic productivity tasks or presenting (which is its primary mission anyway), it’s more than adequate.” That makes sense for documents, reference material, and presentations, but the brightness and color results make this a poor choice for photo editing or a display bought primarily for video. What display modes and connections does it offer?
ViewSonic lists Mirror, Extend, Full Screen, Share, and Dual Source modes. The folding design supports landscape and portrait positioning; Share mode is intended to put the screens in a face-to-face arrangement for presenting. Dual Source lets the two USB-C inputs serve independent sources. The manufacturer describes the USB-C port roles as follows:
- USB-C1: drives the upper display and supports power delivery.
- USB-C2: supports video to both displays, power delivery, and audio output.
- USB-C3: dedicated power input.
The product supports 65 W two-way USB-C Power Delivery. Tom’s Hardware reported powering its review unit from a laptop with one USB-C cable, though whether that works in a particular setup depends on the computer’s USB-C video and power capabilities.

Will both screens extend on macOS or a phone?
Not in Extend mode, according to ViewSonic’s compatibility note. Because of MST limitations, dual-screen Extend is unavailable on macOS and mobile devices; in Extend mode, only the lower display activates on those devices. Check your computer and operating system against ViewSonic’s compatibility information before buying if using both panels as an extended desktop is essential.

How much power does it need?
ViewSonic says the connected source should provide at least 15 W to run one screen and 30 W to run both. Insufficient power may cause flickering. If the computer cannot supply enough, the manufacturer recommends connecting an external adapter to USB-C3, the dedicated power input. The review package included a 65 W wall adapter and two USB-C cables, along with a felt carrying case. The reviewer considered the case suitable for superficial protection, not for drops.

How portable is it, and what does it cost?
At 2.6 pounds, the VG1457 is light enough to fit in a laptop backpack, according to Tom’s Hardware, while its two-screen layout can reduce the need to carry a separate display. The felt case offers some protection during transport but is not drop protection.
ViewSonic’s US store listed the monitor at $349.99 and in stock when accessed on October 7, 2026. Price and availability can change, so check the US product listing for current details. That listing is specific to the US; price and warranty terms may differ by market.

Should you buy the ViewSonic VG1457?
Consider it if you need two foldable screens for documents, general productivity, or face-to-face presenting, and your computer can drive the configuration you want. The compact dual-panel format is the reason to choose it. Skip it if bright output, dependable dual-screen Extend on macOS or mobile, strong color coverage, photo work, or movie viewing is a priority. The VG1457 is a specialized workspace extender, not a broadly capable entertainment or color-critical monitor.
